Unless it heralds a long term, devastating change on human civilization (like the Black Plague, for example), Covid 19 will turn out to be another one of those serious but fleeting adverse blips that history throws out once in a while.  That AAPL took even a middling hit because of it is a credit to the guile of stock manipulators who filled cyberspace with shrill warnings of Apple's impending downfall and an embarrassment to their gullible victims who swallowed this tripe hook, line, and sinker and sold in panic.
The humankind is lucky that the virus started in China with its totalitarian government and plenty of resources. Had it started in the US, the world would have been facing a far more serious threat. It’s inconceivable that the authorities in the US would shut down the economy and lock tens of millions of people in their homes, delivering meals to their front doors. It’s also inconceivable that half of the US would be paced under severe travel restrictions or that the authorities would come to your door to check your temperature and drag you for out of your house to place you under a quarantine in some god forsaken place.

We, in the US, would not be able to contain this virus.

And maybe it's too soon to tell what direction the COVID-19 outbreak will take, along with the cost of global measures taken against it. Will it die out, will it smolder while spreading around the world, or will it--together with the flu--overwhelm our medical facilities, too?
And the fact that it has managed to only kill Chinese people so far is very strange.

Not strange at all.  China took extreme action to contain the virus and its actions are turning out to have been extremely effective.   Thanks China!   The U.S. could have never pulled off what you did.

Can you even imagine the U.S. quarantining entire cities of tens of millions?   Ordering factories, schools and shops to close?   Telling families that only a single member was allowed out of the house and on which days?  Building major new hospitals in a matter of days?   And so on.

Had this virus arisen in the U.S. not only would it have rapidly become a nationwide epidemic but a world wide pandemic.  And meanwhile, the U.S. has done nothing to help China contain or manage this outbreak.   Shameful!

    Bullshit!

    That was 11 days ago,

"Despite rising numbers in both coronavirus infections and fatalities, China has refused offers of assistance from two of the world’s foremost agencies on infectious disease, according to The New York Times. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been offering to send a team of experts from its Epidemic Intelligence Service for more than a month to no avail. And the World Health Organization has also met resistance to travel to Wuhan, where the outbreak started. Some top diplomats told the Times that they fear that China does not want to appear to be unable to handle the growing problem alone. The CDC said it hoped that by observing the medical conditions, it could improve an American response to any threat of a widespread outbreak in the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar told a news conference on Friday that it was out of his hands. “It’s up to the Chinese,” he said. “We continue to expect fully that President Xi will accept our offer. We're ready and willing and able to go.”

That was January 28, 8 days after China officially announced to the world, the virus.

All of that link above is true, and has been reported by many news organizations worldwide. China tried to cover up the initial stages of what would become this epidemic. I've posted as much in response to your falsehoods that you post.

If you follow the link, you can see the PRC's response to the article, and that response is filled with falsehoods and half-truths.

Authoritarians everywhere thank you for your support though!

The Spanish Flu, SARS, and COVID-19 all started in China, and as well, there is an ongoing problem with African Swine Fever which recently lead to the death of 200 m of the 400 m pig population in China.

Better animal husbandry and agricultural practices, better food safety, better regulation of pollution and industrial waste, better regulation of chemicals and ingredients in food, and especially better public health practices in the U.S., all lead to COVID-19 NOT ever having started in the U.S. to begin with, and given that there is no political advantage for our government to cover up a potential epidemic, less likely to happen in the first place.

Not much mention of the numbers of infected and dying medical workers, which will surely be minimized by the PRC, but yeah, locking up half of its population is likely something that only China would be able to accomplish. Great work!

When will we really know how many died, given that there isn't likely to be an honest accounting of the fatalities from the Chinese Government?

The official numbers are grossly underreported. There are hundreds of thousands of infected or perhaps even a few million. The mortality rate is much higher than what’s reported. This virus kills over 80% of those over 60 who get infected. Even though this virus spare higher percentages of younger people, it’s far from being innocuous in any age group. It’s hundreds of times more deadly than the common flu and it spreads much quicker than the flu. It also can survive on surfaces much longer than the common flu virus.

I happen to have a direct channel to an epidemiologist who is currently in Wuhan working on containing this virus. I have information directly from him, which is quite different and far more grave than what the official Chinese sources report.

Ugh ... there's no telling when this COVID-19 outbreak will end - heck there's no telling if it's going to visit us soon (our numbers have been frozen in amber and we're not testing symptomatic patients, even on request).

This thing probably has a R naught waaayyy higher than most popular estimates - and stock prices are just staying up buoyed by good thoughts.

Apple's got way too much reliance on China - they've got 10,000 CNC milling machines in their China facilities, and you don't just throw ten into a first class envelope and mail 'em to India.

Between the demand, manufacturing, and parts-sourcing ends, they're pretty much stuck in China for the foreseeable future.

If they activate a factory and they get a single COVID-19 case, they go into lockdown with all workers quarantined (despite what the schizophrenic central government wants to do). And I sincerely hope they're UVing all product through each macro stage of the assembly line. (Their JIT production/delivery model is way too fast for my comfort level).

China is similar in land area to the USA. Fires in California, or floods in the South don't shut down the entire country. Three mile island didn't turn the whole country into a wasteland. About 40,000 Americans die in car crashed every year. That doesn't stop all economic activity across the country.

Also, a factory is probably one of the easiest facilities to keep clean. The rapid spread of this virus is largely related to lots of people living in close quarters with janky plumbing. It's more surprising that this sort of thing isn't occurring more often in China and in emerging nations with extremely dense populations.

China's shutdown of massive transportation and big events to contain a rapid spreading of a cold virus is excessive caution. If this were a really deadly plague, we wouldn't be reading of 1500 deaths after two months of 11 million people being confined in a megacity.

    That's true....
But, although I do not see it being talked about, I think a main reason for its spread is that a person can be infected for 2-3 weeks before any symptoms appear and they begin to realize that they are sick and may have Corona Virus.   One can infect a LOT of people in 2-3 weeks.   This needs more research.

The flu is less infectious probably because its only 2-3 days (not weeks) between infection and symptoms.

Except Wuhan and the province Hubei, Covid-19 is under control world wide. Outside China there are 900 confirmed cases and 124 have cured. Only three have died. Much less than the influenzas deaths this year.
You are looking at it from the absolute numbers point of view. The real threat is in how quickly and easily this virus spreads as well as the mortality rate of this virus, which is 290 times as high as of the common flu virus.

That’s the reason that China has over 60 million people under a lockdown in their apartments and another 780 million people under travel restrictions. That’s the reason that China almost completely shut down their economy for so
    long.

The real picture here is the scale of the effort to contain the virus and not the scale of the numbers of those infected and those who died from the virus. Without these extraordinary measures to contain the virus, there would have been hundreds of millions of infected and many millions dead by now, and the numbers would be continuing to rise exponentially.

Except that it's not anywhere close to "290 times as high".   Propaganda?

The following is yesterday's numbers. Wuhan and the province Hubei has 61682 confirmed cases. The death rate is 3.2%. Outside Hubei, China has 12598 confirmed cases and 0.68% death rate. Outside China 920 confirmed cases and 0.33% death rate. 542 of the 920 cases are from that Diamond Princesses cruise.

In the end, the world will thank Chinese Communist Party for ordering lockdown of a 11 million city and thus effectively preventing the spread of a deadly virus. This is the perspective I see after almost one month of the COVID-19 event.

Yes, the WHO is involved in helping -- which China has welcomed -- while right wingers in the U.S. use the epidemic to spread their hate and fear.   Meanwhile, the U.S. wants to slash funding of the WHO funding.   Go figure.

Did China spurn U.S. help?   Probably.   Can you blame them?   That's like Hitler offering to help Israel.
So, you lied about the U.S. not offering help.
It depends on what kind of help US is offering.
I'm of the opinion that China did not accept WHO or CDC help or "boots on the ground" as the PRC is attempting to hide the true scope of the epidemic, but of course, both organizations were offering more than expertise.

Shameful!

    Thanks China!

In the end, the world will thank Chinese Communist Party for ordering lockdown of a 11 million city and thus effectively preventing the spread of a deadly virus. This is the perspective I see after almost one month of the COVID-19 event.
In the end, the world will know that the CCP initially attempted to cover up the epidemic, and hence had to move to a mitigation strategy of containment by lockdown.

How wonderful to know that China brought this on themselves, but thanks for containing it mostly to themselves as well, all the while complaining about how awful it is that other countries have travel bans in place to, of all things, contain COVID-19 in their own countries before it creates a pandemic.

You have a habit of using imagination and tend to be brainwashed by people like Rush Limbaugh. Initially it is not an epidemic yet. So why how you conclude that CCO initially attempted to cover up an epidemic?

I have never listened to Rush, I don't buy Epochtimes either, but given the number of deaths it is surely an outbreak/epidemic as the CDC uses both terms interchangeably.

There is plenty of evidence that the initial disease was thought to be SARS, as early as November, and was determined to be an "unusual pneumonia" on December 30 and announced to WHO.

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/rachelsandler/2020/02/16/chinese-president-xi-jinping-knew-about-coronavirus-two-weeks-before-informing-the-public/#7cd0fcf72e7b

Topline: Chinese President Xi Jinping was aware of the coronavirus two weeks before he acknowledged it publicly, according to an internal speech published by state media, an admission that could fuel more criticism as China’s Communist Party faces intense international and domestic backlash for its handling of the deadly virus.

    • In remarks to top government officials earlier this month, Xi said he “issued demands about the efforts to prevent and control” the disease on January 7—two weeks before he made his first public comments about the virus on January 20.
    • The speech was published by state media in an apparent effort to show that Xi took charge of the country’s response from the beginning, but it may result in more criticism that the Chinese government didn’t sound the alarm early enough.
    • The Chinese officials have been facing unprecedented anger from citizens who say the government suppressed information about the severity of the outbreak early on.
    • In response to the fury, local government officials have been fired.

"Key background: The Chinese public has focused their anger around the case of Li Wenliang, a doctor who was punished for attempting to warn the public about the dangers of the virus in December. Local authorities asked him to sign a letter acknowledging he made "false comments" after he wrote about the disease in his medical school alumni group on messaging service WeChat. Li later contracted coronavirus and eventually died on February 7, resulting in an outpouring of fury and grief over how he was treated."

No! This virus is not SARS. Because the symptoms are different. Chinese doctors spent nearly two months trying to determine what virus it is.

Reading comprehension is not your forte.

The point is, that there was warning of an "unusual pneumonia", and it was ignored until January 7th, and it wasn't until January 20 that it was announced to China and the world. That's 3 weeks of additional exposure for a virus that has an incubation period of at least 10 days. Even Xi Jinping announcing it on the 7th would have made a difference in how far and wide the virus was transmitted.

There was another report that one of the Military Academies in Wutan had a massive change in security on the 2nd.  That's evidence of an additional 5 days that China waited to act.
