If these are not masks that Apple somehow magically have come up with independently of all other sources, Apple should get out of the queue of HC institutions and countries across the planet desperately clamoring for such masks on the global market. 20 million masks to Apple means some others needy in another country probably would go short of masks. (that is how brutal the global market for masks is right now)
Having the masks on hand, Apple should donate the masks to the US federal pooled resources so they can be distributed to those needing them most, and get out of the business of virtue signaling.
Last thing Apple should do is give these masks to Jared to hoard. They should give 80% of them directly to the states the states being hit hard now and then the rest to remaining states.
No, that's not fair! Jared doesn't hoard vital medical supplies and equipment. He gives them to private for-profit distributors who then distribute them according to free market principles -- to the highest bidder among the 50 states.
My amateur projections saying the number of infected will quadruple over the next 2 week (in the USA)...
I really hope I’m wrong.
You may be right and of course that would be very bad, but we as a country desperately need perspective. As of now, if the coronavirus deaths quadruple they will still be less than projected deaths for the flu. It also very likely that the death rate is strongly skewed toward a higher death rate since those who are suffering are mainly the ones being tested.
I only say these things because our panic and overreactions to the coronavirus is causing more problems than the virus itself. We need to take it seriously, but we need to have perspective and patience.
Point 1. Anyone who suspects they may have is being tested, not just “those who are suffering”.
Point 2. You cant base “overreacting” to what the numbers show NOW. This isn’t about NOW, its about preparing for what might come, if you dont do anything NOW. This ignorance is EXACTLY why the US has sharply risen in the passed week - no one took it seriously when they SHOULD have - long before it became a problem. With an epidemic you have to fix it before it begins, otherwise its too late.
Point 3. “If the deaths quadruple” ... We havent even started with the body counts yet. The US is going to surge and surpass all other countries combined due to the lack of national leadership and management.
“If deaths quadruple “ then it will only be 50K and a great success in US. Trump will be seen as winning and will be elected in a landslide. Biden is scared to go out of his bubble.
Yep, that's the plan! Predict far more deaths than are expected (without any facts behind that) then declare victory when the actual numbers come in lower.
And no, Biden isn't afraid. He's sensible. Big difference.

In all fairness, they are his PPE. They aren't for the states that comprise the United States of America. /s

Right, so you didn't actually watch the video or read the article; fair enough, I know clicking through is tricky for some people.
As well as the procurement of masks, Cook also mentioned that Apple design engineers have created a new mask that is faster to manufacture, is easier to ship in bulk, and can be assembled in minutes. That was actually clearly stated in the article.
The rest of your post is made up of the usual 'maybes' and 'probablys' so you clearly don't have the information on how Apple is procuring the masks.
One thing that these companies can do better than hospitals, individual trusts and one or two governments run by incompetent nincompoops who claim to be top-notch wheeler-dealers, is negotiate better prices when buying by the million, which health trusts cannot do, and the companies that run hospitals would rather not do. Because believe it or not, the prices on these vital items have rocketed since the virus broke. That's what happens when the market is allowed to run free; you need experienced companies run by people like Cook, who know how to bleed the most out of the supply chain.
What America needs to do is mandate that these medicines, medical equipment and PPE are manufactured in the US or atleast impose 400% Tariffs. Trump is right on the need to roll back globalism which is why the globalist billionaire controlled Democrats fight him and are wrong. Likewise Similar tariffs should be Applied to electronics like the iPhones. China can not be trusted to operate fairly or transparently.
Sorry, but you are 40 years late. Globalization is a fact and it's here to stay. We tried the go it alone strategy with test kits and it was a total fiasco.
The fact that Trump has been fiddling since this virus was announced back in 2019 doesn't absolve him of responsibility.

American xenophobes afraid of global industries are in favor of US prison labor to keep costs low so they can talk about how much is being made in the US. Yay for the resurgence of slavery!

You are 100% wrong. Trump was told a couple of years ago when he was proposing his ridiculous tariffs, that he shouldn’t imposed them on medical equip0ment, but he did anyway. As a result, there have been shortages even before Covid-19. He was than told to remove the tariffs in the November security meeting where he was a briefed on this disease, before the general public knew of it in China. He again refusals, and in December disbanded they group that helps prepare the nation for epidemics, because “they weren’t doing that much”. Well, of course. They watch and then advise.
even with Thais disaster, Trump is the biggest disaster this country is seeing. His stupidity and venality is unmatched.
The pandemic response team was disbanded over a year ago under NSC director Bolton TRUMP
Fixed that for you! ... And Trump has disbanded multiple pandemic & public health teams at different times. Siting one of them doesn't make melgross wrong.
Do NOT use Zoom for conference calls for any reason (the CEO is Chinese and ‘borrowed’ the technology from his days working at WebEx). Zoom routes traffic through Chinese state owned servers, scans for technical content and steals it. Their marketing states that Zoom connects with end to end encryption - an outright lie. The software client skirts the protected install process to compromise the host computer. ZOOM is giving away the service for free, taking advantage of the COVID epidemic, so they can access data from key universities and companies. China will become a stronger nation because of Zoom, the CEO a national hero. Please spread the word!
Just like we shouldn’t use Hauwei for G5. China steals our Technologies and gives us CoronaVirus in Return. Time to outlaw manufacturing in China.
We not only need China's 5G and their superior technology and manufacturing expertise, but we also need the ventilators they just shipped to New York.

And we also need self discipline—if people were acting responsibly this outbreak would already be under control, and we’d also not be perpetually out of foods and supplies and greedy losers charging $40 for a 16oz bottle of ‘Equate’ (Walmart brand) isopropyl alcohol on eBay.
“Price gouging” just means there will be adequate supplies on the shelves. Know why the supply of toilet paper and paper towels disappeared across the country in the first several weeks? Sellers were not allowed to find the price people were willing to pay through price discovery. Supply and demand are fundamentals which remain no matter what is happening in the real world.

The biggest problem we’ve had as a nation is the politicized response of this administration. Even though its been forced to acknowledge the seriousness of this horrible disease, it still refuses to do whatever is required. Still playing politics even now.
to think that this isn’t as serious as medical authorities are saying it is, is willfully criminal.
It’s understood than many deaths from this are going underreported as they are being ascribed to other illnesses, such as pneumonia, which is a major result of Covad-19, and is what many people die from once they get Covid-019.
the minimum number of deaths from this, assuming everything is done properly, and all required medical equipment is readily available, which it is not, is over 100,000. Assuming things wont get too much worse than that, with known shortages of ventilators and other vital equipment, the estimate is around 240,000 deaths. The numbers soar from there with more extreme scenarios, all the way up to an unlikely 4 million. There are normally between 20,000 and 40,000 deaths from the flu every year here, with a delayed vaccine in 2017 resulting in 80,000 deaths. There is no vaccine for this, and likely wont be one for around 18 months, with medical researchers stating that that would be a miracle. I hope that time line will be shorter, but it’s not very likely. Even the US company that has a candidate that is going to testing right about now, has said that it will still take 18 months, assuming it works, something that we don't know.
We still have some southern and Midwest governors refusing to instate social distancing rules. Rules that are enforced. They say that there aren’t enough cases in their states yet to do that. Stupidity unbounded! They don't seem to understand that the best time to do that is when there are few, or even no cases. So they’ll wait for more advice from the White House, they say, before instituting these rules.
This whole response makes me sick, and not with the virus, because my wife and I are being very careful, and not going out.
Those things you are so concerned about are State responsibilities, not the Federal government.
What I find so bizarre is those who have been the biggest critics of this President are also the same ones who are demanding more of an authoritarian response from the Feds. Those two trains of thought don’t run on the same track.

Fucking amazing. These are 2 of the most tangible things I've read of ANY company doing, in terms of directly impacting this crisis.

Yep, didn’t these States and Cities learn anything from Katrina that you are on your own when a Republican is in office. If america wanted thoughtful Federal leadership we would have elected Hillary. Time for survival of the Richest and Fittest.
I read someone was adapting CPAP machines (continuous positive airway pressure) as ventilators. I wonder if Apple might be able to design a basic ventilator that connects to an iPad as the controller. For those who don’t need full intubation.
You can make ventilators that are a basic pump with a homemade mechanism to press and release the bellows.
The problem with using a CPAP with a COVID-19 patient is that it expels air under pressure from the mask. So basically it provides a great way to broadcast virus laden aerosols from the infected patient to everyone else in the same room. Probably not a good idea, which is why it's not a recommended treatment. In fact, if you use a CPAP for sleep apnea and you suspect that you may be infected with COVID-19 you should not sleep in the same room with other people, or cats.

You shouldn't mix any pets right now. We're getting word of felines being infected, but canines could be carriers. Better to be safe than sorry until we know for sure, but if dogs are unable to be carriers precautions should still be taken because one could transfer to a collar or leash which is then handed to another person which gets it on their hands and then on their face and then in their body.

No, you don't. You need virtue signaling companies to stay out of the global supply queue when they have no direct need for the masks.
There are countries around the world cheering when they manage to get hold of 1.5 million masks, so their health care workers don't have to use the same masks 10 times or more.
Countries out there have to set up secret transports of masks in order not to be robbed or have their shipments seised in transit (like Turkey did with medical supplies transported through the country), or countries that simply cannot effort to pay, or loose in competition with entities such as Apple who can afford to.
If Apple actually used its buying power and logistics skills to supply countries and areas that are in most need without bragging about it, I would not say a thing except praise. Now they are only operating in a reprehensible manner driving prices up, and limiting critical supply to others.
You have no fucking idea what you're talking about. And yet you're so confident about your statements. Impressive.
Also, who exactly is harmed when Apple "brags" (your term) about it? The worst it could possibly do is incentivize other companies to do more. Oh, the horror.

You're skewed.
First, not everyone who has died has been tested -- in Spain in particular they were swamped and a lot of people just died at home, with no test or tie-in to the data.
Second, there is a massive quarantine across the globe, and despite that the deaths rose to 70,000 very quickly. It is only due to the draconian social distancing that we have been able to flatten the curve. COVID-19 is much more contagious than flu and more deadly across age brackets.
...What we're doing is working, thankfully. But if we did nothing the simple math of the death rate speaks for it self, millions would die.

You probably aren't aware that Chinese diaspora and state owned enterprises were buying up PPE including some 2 Billion masks from the various countries that they reside in then shipped then back to China during the crisis in the Hubei province. This is similar to the behavior of Chinese citizens buying up infant formula en mass from other countries, believing their own internally produced infant formula is tainted.
"More than two billion face masks sourced from countries around the world including Australia were sent to China at the height of the coronavirus epidemic in Wuhan, according to official figures released by the Chinese customs service.
Employees of Chinese state-owned companies were directed to purchase whatever they could find in the way of masks and protective clothing to send back home in a massive humanitarian effort."
Actually, tech companies do indeed need this PPE for their various liaisons into the supply chain. That Apple has sourced a relative small amount of PPE, and has entered into designing and building PPE were appropriate, is admirable, That the current Administration, with the "brilliant" input of the President's son in law Jared Kushner, has totally fucked up the supply chain for PPE, ventilators, and various pharmaceuticals, and on top of that, the distribution of those by Federal agencies, is really the issue at this point in time.
For the record, I believe that Jared is "Butthead", not "Beavis". I invite you to make your case otherwise.

Sourcing 20M masks and designing/shipping a new face shield is now defined as "virtue signalling"?
Sourcing 20M masks for a company that has absolutely no direct use of the masks when the supply situation is CRITICAL for health care personell across the planet - effectively removing that supply from the market is reckless at best. It is clearly used for virtue signaling by Apple.
The only honorable action by Apple is immediately giving up their stock and return it for distribution between HC professionals where they are needed the most – also outside the US.
Sourcing 20M masks and designing/shipping a new face shield is now defined as "virtue signalling"?

Apple's business is sourcing materials and getting manufacturers to make products. Steve Jobs historically got Corning to take something they created decades earlier with no perceived market value to Corning and put it into production in a timeframe so short that the iPhone he demoed on stage in January wasn't made of what would be trademarked as Gorilla Glass and the CEO of Corning didn't think was possible to ramp up production for a June launch. Apple—even if you hate them—you have to admit that they are the best at being able to get textiles makers, plastic molders, countless other types of vendors to ship components to manufacturers who can ramp up production based on Apple's direction to make masks produced. For all you know these masks are being created with materials and on assembly lines that would otherwise be used for Apple products. What I don't understand is how someone can be so callous and cruel as to be upset when someone helps others as to only look for some alternative reasoning and try their damndest to make it seem like a bad thing to help others.

No, that's not fair! Jared doesn't hoard vital medical supplies and equipment. He gives them to private for-profit distributors who then distribute them according to free market principles -- to the highest bidder among the 50 states.
Yep, that's the plan! Predict far more deaths than are expected (without any facts behind that) then declare victory when the actual numbers come in lower.
And no, Biden isn't afraid. He's sensible. Big difference.
... And Trump has disbanded multiple pandemic & public health teams at different times. Siting one of them doesn't make melgross wrong.

Also, who exactly is harmed when Apple "brags" (your term) about it? The worst it could possibly do is incentivize other companies to do more. Oh, the horror.
