Apple Silicon M1 Mac delivery times slip into 2021 for higher-end configurations

If you want more than a basic configuration of the new Apple Silicon Macs with M1 chips, it may be too late to get it before Christmas.

If you want an M1 MacBook Pro before the holidays, your options are quickly narrowing down

On the morning of December 3, the standard configurations of all the new M1 Macs are still showing December delivery dates when ordering directly from Apple. Among standard options, all but the $1,249 MacBook Air configuration arrive before Christmas.

However, many custom configurations with upgraded RAM or storage have fallen back to January. And, AppleInsider has learned that this delayed shipping is happening to some previous orders as well.

For example, customers ordering a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a 1TB storage upgrade are looking at a January 13 estimated delivery from Apple. Apple is estimating a maxed-out MacBook Air will arrive between January 20 and January 27.

Even if you're shopping for a standard configuration of an Apple Silicon Mac, you may want to act quickly to get it in time for the holidays. With delivery dates beginning to slip after the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping frenzy, it's likely even standard-configuration deliveries will slip into 2021, under pressure from the holidays and the ongoing supply chain issues.

Apple resellers are also experiencing delayed ship dates, many of which coincide with Apple or run a week behind.

Are there any "used" M1 Macs showing up on eBay yet, for 50% extra? I might sell mine for that.

Not that we've seen, but admittedly, we haven't delved that far into the scalper's market.

I ordered my Macbook Pro 16GB 1 TB model back in nov 17th. That very day, the App Store app said that everything was there for my order, and I would receive it between Dec 3-10th. Today is the 3rd, and it’s still in processing. I hope it’s not going to be moved back from that.

I ordered the base Air on Nov. 12 (via Adorama) and not a peep from Apple yet on shipping. Hope it gets here by Christmas since it's a gift!

I would never buy a laptop off of eBay.  The probability of it being a scam is too high for me, not that I'd pay a premium for a "used" M1.  I guess only those impulse buyers would buy them this way, versus getting it the safer way via Apple.

High demand or low production rates?  Given that the form factor itself hasn't changed that much, it would be surprising that general manufacturing has been the issue.  Is it that the chip fab or board production is lagging?
It sucks to be waiting for a new laptop, especially given the excitement around the M1 chip.

I hope this doesn't also delay the release of the 16 inch MBP.  My wife's current MBP has a speaker issue so would love to replace it with a new 16 inch unit.

From what I’m reading, it’s demand. In Japan, for example, Apple went from forth place with 14% marketshare, good by international Mac sales expectations, to 1st place, with a 27% marketshare, just two weeks after release.

I'm guessing high demand, though the M1 also "competes" with the A14 for production capacity at TSMC. The reviews have been incredibly good.

Really surprised by the higher end BTO's being in such demand (and based by these delays, I think Apple is too). Don't get me wrong, the M1 is extremely impressive, but only see the real value in the base models, because they make most sense for someone buying what amounts to an "entry-level" system. To each his own, I suppose.

I really want a new iMac, but who knows when the 27" is going to get updated? In the meantime, I may spring for a mini to hold me over.

I would say demand, just looking at Apple and other sites. I'm surprised analysts haven't called this a super cycle for the new Macs. There is a thread on MacRumors, where a lot of people are upgrading from really old Macs to the new M1s.

Correct. And the more demand for the M1 there is, we may see delays in M1X production! Although, I tend to think Apple (TSMC) is already producing other M1 variants and that might also explain why the M1 is having a hard time keeping up with demand.

I ordered on the day it was announced as soon as the store popped up. It shipped quickly despite being a BTO (16GB) model.

Last week I was looking at the MBA for a gift and the dates did not look bad then. Maybe the weekend swamped them.

Wow. I took advantage of a Cyber Monday promotion at Adorama for the configuration I wanted (16GB/7Core GPU/512GB). Hopefully I get mine before January 8 (by when I need to return the model I've been using). Did they submit the drop-ship order to Apple November 12?

Apple M1 Chip with 8-Core CPU and 8-Core GPU + 16GB + 2TB

Ordered Nov 12th and received Dec 3rd. It's so good. Amazing that I can install Steam and a game like Disco Elysium, with comparable performance to the same game on an Intel 8700K with 1080 Ti GPU. And, after the first launch when it did the translation, it launches instantly now.

Plus all the native stuff that's already available. Almost as exciting as the first iMac G5 I bought - which was my first Mac.

I bought my partner a new Air to replace his 2008 MacBook. I wonder if he’ll notice a difference?

Demand is extremely high for what I can see and frankly the product lives up to expectations.    I went down to the Apple store the Friday after release and most of the machines where sold out all ready.    I felt lucky to get a 16 Gb machine.    They literally had lines in front of the store earlier in the week.   There hasn't been a PC this hot in years, maybe a decade and this is the introductory machines.   

I can't wait to see what the new machines in 2021 look like.   It will especially be interesting to see which technology avenue Apple goes down for the high performance chips.    Many expect an M1 diriviative but I would not be surprised to see something entirely different.   As has already been state they are going to produce a family of chips and I don't expect every member of that family to be a carbon copy of previous chips.
