this is in NO way related to the apple tablet rumor
I believe that I am well within my latitude to at least state that as one point of reference I believe him and I have been here the longest. I am not arguing. I could not care less how many other people agree or disagree even though everyone ELSE has been here less time than I have. I also am not open to arguments to the contrary. Never have been.
As for private messages, I do not use that technological option.
I am ONLY replying to this post because you asked me, in a public manner, and I am returning the gesture.
Having said that, please continue with any and all speculation concerning what will be in MY VIEW the most important product that Apple could ever produce.
I can't WAIT for an Apple hand held or tablet to arrive. I just NOW purchased a Palm after delaying it many years for an Apple product. Also, sitting on a pile of much money, I am anxiously awaiting 970s to accompany my tablet.
And, I don't care what the color is, as long as it's a SMALL screen. I probably will buy a dozen of them...one for each room.
Kormac has always been very entertaining with his predictions and lively tech discussions. But the only time he has been right (or "lucky") was regarding the introduction of the slot-load CD-ROM drive for the iMac, a couple of months before its introduction. And that was a few years ago. As far as I am concerned, Kormac's predictions are a mixture of good logic and wishful thinking. Nothing wrong with that.
<edit: forgot to add my comments about the tablet thing>
I just hope that any sort of portable device beyond the iBook/PBook would fit in a shirt or jacket pocket. Making it larger would be Newton-like suicide. I do recall S. Jobs mentioning they (Apple) were taking a wait-and-see approach on the new MS-Tablet platform. I think he even mentioned he thought it was the wrong way to do it. Maybe because of its size. Who knows. I still think Apple will soon come up with some sort of portable Digital Life device, but leaning more towards a communications device (iPhone/iPad combo) that works both by itself as well as giving some new capabilities to your Mac while hooked to it, instead of an iTablet.
I'm trying to figure out how to keep the cost lower than an iBook.
An iPod harddrive would be enough because it shouldn't have to boot very often.
No optical drive.
The screen would be a little smaller according to reports.
Same G3.
No keyboard!
What else would it take? I think the iPod is a good way to predict what an iTablet would be like. Just in the sense that it relies on a Mac for compete functionality. I think the iTablet would have to be the same. It could leave home and be useful, but would need to dock on occaision for best results.
What could be left behind then to make it cost less, but be reliant on a Mac?

iPod drives very likely cost more than 2.5" drives, so I don't think that's going to reduce it much.
Personally, I'd buy a keyboardless 12" iBook the minute it was released, at $899 it's a bargain tablet.
Yeah, I agree. It IS pretty fat in its proportions. If a Powerbook had those proportions, it would be 2.2" thick. And we know that the Powerbook isn't. 8) I want an aluminum enclosure, definitely.
ok it's taken me a bit of time to trawl through this entire thread (haven't even gotten started on the "PDA/tablet confirmation.. one yet)
BUT
WRT the questions of whether it would run a full blown off-the-shelf OSX, it occurred to me that there is no optical drive and hence the off-the-shelf disk would have to go via a master machine.
if you have a master machine then you will also have an OS disk.
i see it as far more likely that the OS of the tablet/thingy would be installed in much the same way that the iPod is currently handled and hence a 'lite' version of OSX with a derivative of 'Remote Desktop' playing a major role.
this would also have a positive rather than negative impact on current hardware inventory sales.
OMG! Are you defective? listen very carefully, read slow, let it sink in.

PREDICTION,

I really glad you said it Matsu, and I want to be VERY clear about this: I love good speculation, but for it to be of any use at all, there has to be a clear and honest line drawn between good speculation and outright intentional deception; that is, when someone pretends they've got inside information in order to get people to give them and their mere speculations some attention, which only fuels huge false hopes and leads some of the AI community to speculate on directions which wind up being based on utter nonsense
In short, there's nothing worse than a pretender.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with speculating, that's what FH is all about - and it's great as long as we're clear about it - but there's plenty wrong with deception.

not sure..depends on the color of the new powermac enclosure
an idevice is white..or white and mirror..hmm it would make a great mirror!!
i dont think it will be an i-Device
my guess is...they will look like a cross between the 20" cinema display and an ibook
the ibook really needs an update btw...

Touchpad. It wouldn't save alot but something.
I'm not sure I understand why you want to make it a rely on a Mac. Could you explain that?

Um, yes exactly.
I imagine right now the "iPod 2" team sitting in Cupertino... laughing their asses off at these rumors.
What we brushed off as the iWalk hoax last year is today's holy rumor writ.
I too would want a keyboardless iBook, not this small, fat thing.
