AirTag tracking busts rich kid stealing presidential campaign yard signs

If you're planning to steal 60 presidential campaign yard signs, don't just check out the potential penalty, look for an AirTag too.

A hand holds a small, circular Apple device against a blurred outdoor background.
Yet again, an AirTag makes you wonder what we did before them

AirTags have found stolen cars, stolen mail, and unfortunately also been used to track car thief victims. But now one has been used in Springfield, MO, it track down someone stealing yard signs.

No formal charges have been filed yet, and police investigation is still continuing, so it's not fully clear what happened. But it is known that Laura McCaskill and her partner John included an AirTag with their Harris/Walz yard sign, and that was tracked to a car that had around 60 such signs in the trunk.

In a video apparently taken by McCaskill and posted on social media, a mother and her son later described as "entitled," are asked to open the trunk. On revealing the yard signs within, the mother grabs some, and throws them at McCaskill and her partner, saying "Here you go, liberals."

"Oh you know the law for what you steal!" https://t.co/6MlUKaMYAB

The mother then leaves, and the young man who appears to be her son makes a case that it was all just in fun. He also offers to load the 60 signs into the resident's car.

However, he also very quickly attempts to refute McCaskill's comment that the thefts were of sufficient value to constitute a felony. He says McCaskill is wrong because the signs go for "three or four dollars" on Etsy, so "I mean, six times three, okay."

McCaskill says that the signs cost $20 each. "It's a $2,500 offense in Missouri," continues the resident, "[that's] up to a year of jail time."

"If it exceeds $200," says the young man.

"Oh, you know the law for what you steal?" says McCaskill.

According to local news station Ozarksfirst, this was the fourth time such a sign had been stolen from McCaskill's yard. She decided to add an AirTag, which she and her partner initially tracked to a Springfield restaurant, then on to a home in Nixa.

"If I was just dealing with the young man," said McCaskill, [it] would have been easier to forgive, but the fact that signs were thrown at us and there was no accountability and this was trespassing on 59 people's properties, it was entitlement, is wrong here."

"My primary objective, yes, I think it needs to be called out the behavior," she continued. "I also feel if it was just [my sign], I would not press charges."

"Others are in the neighborhood and filing police reports because this is a very large swathe and is happening in various Springfield neighborhoods," McCaskill continued. "We don't want to cause any harm to the young man or his family, but the attitude is bothersome and I hope that can be turned around for him."

This isn't a partisan issue, though. While the case continues, local Greene County Prosecutor Dan Patterson said that are penalties for election sign stealing.

"A conviction for any of these offenses shall be punished by imprisonment of not more than one year or by a fine of not more than two thousand five hundred dollars or by both such imprisonment and fine," said Patterson.

McGaskill's sign also had her address on the back, so police allowed her to reclaim it. The remaining signs are being held by the police in case other residents press charges for theft or trespassing.

Note that police -- and AppleInsider -- caution against confronting thieves tracked by AirTags.

It's sad that decorum is gone from one party as MAGA made cheating and stealing acceptable.

This isn’t anything new. I remember people stealing not only elections signs but real estate signs, road cones, traffic signs, caution tape, you name it. If it’s something left outside, near the road, people will be tempted to steal it. Most of that was in fun, steal an election sign or real estate sign and place in front of someone else’s house, that sort of thing.

You're kidding right? Refresh my memory, was it the Republicans or the Democrats in California (and everywhere else) that increased the amount you'd have to steal or shoplift for it to be a felony, or even be prosecuted? I hope you're trolling, because your comment is extremely ignorant.

WTF are you on about. The Republican Party was hijacked by RINOs who are made a diety out of convicted felon who was great buddies with Epstein and whose only ever made money from conning people and refuses to accept that he lost the election last time and the popular vote twice and has literally stated he wants to be dictator.

You'd think the sexual assault alone would keep him from getting enough to keep people from voting for him, but I guess some people like the idea of a rapist in office. Personally, I believe in democracy so if you want to support an entitled, whining, pedophile, who has gaslit you into believing the stupidest fucking lies even when there is plenty of evidence showing he and his propaganda machine (FOX) didn't even believe the lies themselves... you go right ahead — you have that right.

PS: Speaking of yard signs, do you not recall the Ohio sheriff that was instructing residents to write down names of people with Harris signs in their yards. You really don't think that was problematic? No party is perfect, but one is now egregiously corrupt and anti-democratic.

    It's not rocket science.

Don't take someone else's property.  Whether you agree, or disagree with the person, doesn't matter.  It has no bearing on theft.
You have a right to your opinion, and the right to express it - doesn't matter what party you belong to.

When I ran, I found people were not stealing the signs, but just tossing them in to the brush, and such.

    Don’t be evil.

Regardless of differing viewpoint. You don’t have the right to silence someone’s viewpoint or steal/vandalize, etc. their property.

If everyone honored the golden rule, the world would be such a better place.

That’s what I would have thought here. Surprised they kept them.

What disturbs me is the mother’s behavior modeling for her son. Contributing to the delinquency of a minor should be considered.

Silencing other people's rights to lawful speech. Why am I not surprised?

On one hand, "sign wars" are a perennial thing in elections. Putting them out and knocking them down makes people think they're really doing something. Police and the DA probably aren't going to invest in a felony prosecution and are probably loathe to get pulled into national hyper-politics over this. With 60 signs stolen (rather than knocked down) and parental lack of remorse recorded on video, though, it's possible they'll use the threat of a felony to get a plea deal for a misdemeanor with a fine that hurts at least a little.

You shouldn't be if you live in Florida, Texas or other MAGA states that have outlawed certain speech.

Refresh my memory as to WHY they raised the amount you'd have to steal to face a felony?  HINT:  not enough jail space to house all the idiots stealing anything from lipstick to liquor in Target and supermarkets and such.  In case you aren't on top of it, CA has a proposition on the ballot this year to make any theft under $950 a felony to deter these menial thefts.
