Apple now lets you transfer purchases from one Apple Account to another

Apple has made it possible for users to move their purchased content, such as apps and music, from one Apple Account to a different one of their choosing. Here's how it works.

Purchases can now be migrated from one Apple Account to another

The change was revealed on Tuesday through a support document on the Apple website, which details the exact procedures and requirements for transferring purchases between Apple Accounts. Though the iPhone maker already lets users share purchases via Family Sharing, where all family members have access to apps, books, and movies that individual family members buy, Apple's latest purchase migration feature has an entirely different purpose.

According to the company's support document, the purchase transfer feature is intended for users who use two Apple Accounts for different features on their device -- a primary account for iCloud and its associated functionality, and a secondary one for the App Store and media purchases.

Even before the company renamed its iconic "Apple ID" to "Apple Account" as part of the iOS 18 update, users have asked for a way to transfer purchases from one account to another without sharing anything. This means that purchases would, ideally, be removed from one account and added to a different one of the user's choice, and that's exactly what Apple's purchase migration feature enables.

Even so, the company has a strict list of requirements and eligibility criteria. For one, the transfer of purchases from one account to another is not available for users in the European Union, United Kingdom, or India. Both accounts need to be set to the same country and region, with two-factor authentication and valid payment methods, while Family Sharing needs to be disabled.

The website also notes that purchases from locked, disabled, deleted, or deactivated accounts can't be transferred. Purchase migration is also not possible unless the user's primary account was used for purchases or downloads at least once.

How to migrate your Apple Account purchases

The process of migrating purchases from one Apple Account to another is fairly straightforward. To do so, you can follow the steps below:

  • Open the Settings app and tap on your Apple Account name

  • Tap "Media and Purchases"

  • Scroll down until you see the "Migrate Purchases" option and tap it

After this, you'll need to review the account information for both your primary and secondary accounts and follow the steps detailed within the Settings app. Once you've done that, you should receive confirmation emails on both accounts, notifying you that your purchases have been migrated.

Your secondary account will no longer be usable for purchases, so you should sign out of it once the entire process is complete. Apple has also provided a way of undoing the process, though, as can be seen on the company's support website.

While I can understand the decision behind Family Sharing having to b disabled , that’s a major setback. Also don’t understand the limitation behind this feature not available in certain countries or why the accounts to be in the same country, which is exactly my case (they are in different countries).

About this last point I’ve always wondered what happens if I change the country of my Apple account that is currently used for iCloud services but that also held previous app purchases.

For people that change country of residence frequently it’s quite a mess.

What about people who have an Apple ID and purchases in the USA and another Apple ID and purchases outside the US?  (Not European Union, United Kingdom, or India)  Say for example, Japan.  Is the moving of purchases supported in that case?

Seems like no. Especially since moving content across regions would likely be a logistical nightmare.

Classic Apple! And that after decades of waiting.
And with Family Sharing being another blocker (why?!!) this seems to be another half-assed execution.

Try changing the region of your Japan account to USA (or USA account to Japan) so both of your accounts are the same region. I am also in the exact same boat as you (USA and Japan accounts). I would check myself if that worked, but I have an Apple Balance on both accounts, so I can’t change my account region until that balance is gone.

I still keep both accounts active because there are some American apps (and whatnot) that I cannot get on the Japan App Store and some Japanese apps that I cannot get on the USA App Store. Which is annoying. I’d (of course) rather have just have one account and not have to switch back and forth to purchase and download something. So (whether it worked out not) I would still need to keep both accounts around and in use.

I am curious what would happen with some of the purchases that are region-specific (after you convert your account region). Would that region-specific stuff not be accessible? I have never converted either of my accounts to a different region, so I am not sure exactly what would happen. If anybody knows, please share your knowledge with me and jdw.

I have no idea why "This feature isn’t available to users in the European Union, United Kingdom, or India."

So long as users are merging two accounts in the same region, it should not pose a problem. We may argue about EU and UK, but India? That's just one damn country with a few states.

Migration worked for me, but had a number of issues afterwards.

    1. I had to disconnect Movies Anyway and reconnect it to my primary Apple account. That worked fine, though movies didn't show up on any devices I had already logged into (just my iPad) until I logged back out and in again. I appears all MA movies migrated over. I have 404 movies in my MA account and 470 movies showed up in my Library, so that seems correct. I didn't check all of them, but there are ones I bought outside of iTunes showing up.
    2. My Apple TV got into a weird state where it was both signed into media and not (I saw my Up Next, but wasn't logged in). I had signed out and it wanted me to sign back in using my iPhone, but doing so never completed. I tried rebooting my Apple TV, but that didn't help. I finally had to log in to media manually on my Apple TV. After that I logged out and was able to log back in automatically using my iPhone.
    3. I had to open the Home app on my iPhone and iPad and tap the pop up saying to switch my home to my new music account a few times. That may be related to issue #2 above.
    4. When I signed into Music on my Mac, I couldn't find any way to enable library syncing. Eventually it asked me if I wanted to and I said yes. I have a large number of songs that I previously matched or uploaded via iTunes Match back in the day. These initially showed up as "waiting" and then a large percentage went to "error", "ineligible" or "duplicate". I selected them all and chose "add to library" and most, but not all changed to the correct status (uploaded, matched, etc). Some are still showing as "illegible" that had previously been matched or uploaded. Apple does say it can take several hours for your Apple Music library to update, so I'll try again later. As far as I can tell all my playlists are there, including ones I added this week. I had to authorize my Mac again.
    5. I got signed out of Game Center several times (see below). I'm not sure why exactly. When I checked I was logged out on my Mac, iPad and iPhone. I signed in using my secondary Apple account which worked, but when I check a little later I was logged out again. I signed in again. I'm not sure how long it actually stays logged in. It does show the correct Game Center profile in the App Store when logged in, despite the accounts being different, but I fear that it won't stay logged in.
    6. When I went to update an installed app it made me enter my secondary account password on my iPhone and iPad (not my Mac). After doing that I needed to enter my primary account password to view my media account. I believe this is because it needs to log in as the account an app was downloaded under which was the secondary one. I’m hoping it remembers the password as and I don’t want to have to delete and reinstall all my apps to get them to update without requiring me to enter a password every time.

This is a good start - it's a shame it's taken this long to show up. It also sounds like you can't move Transit Card balances, which for me is sort of the last remaining blocker...

Probably because they don't want them, at least the first two, finding some new excuse to idiotically litigate because isn't implemented the way they want.

Are you able to reestablish family sharing on the primary account, or is that feature no longer available? If Family Sharing is dead, this migration feature is a step backwards and no benefit at all.

It seems family sharing can be turned back on wen you're done with the migration.

This feature doesn't really work. I'm trying to get it to work and in CLASSIC apple fashion, it says (on this page):

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/117294

"You might not see Migrate Purchases if you’re not eligible. Check what to do before you migrate purchases."

Does it explain why? Of course not. Silly you.

    Support chat says:

There is a mutlitude of different reasons why it could not be eligible. Here's a few:

Auto Reload must be disabled on the secondary account
    • Both accounts must be in the same country and region
    • A positive store-credit balance on the secondary account
    • A delinquent or bad-credit status
    • Secondary account participates in Family Sharing
    • Both accounts must be enrolled in two-factor authentication

Do they provide a tool for checking? OF COURSE NOT.

    Sigh. Apple is infuriating sometimes.

Hallelujah!!! About gd time. I remember when Tim hinted at this happening 'soon' in a customer email over 10 years ago, or something like that.

It actually worked. I can finally get rid of my gmail account!

This could finally be the solution to a major PIA that's being dragging me down for more than a decade, or whenever it was that MobileMe was taken back behind the barn and shot. Whew. Finally.

That said ... there are just so many things that could go wrong with this process that I'm going to let it sit on the rack for a while until it cools off and seems safe to eat.  I have a crapload of ripped music that was integrated into my Apple Music library back when Music Match was around. Music Match was eventually sucked into Apple Music so I don't know how those files are tagged. I also have quite a few iTunes purchases in there as well. I still have all the CDs but I'm in no mood at all to spend hours or days ripping them back in, if that is even possible. Add to that, I've also replaced a number of my iTunes and Music Match uploads with lossless versions of the same albums and tracks.

What could possibly go wrong I ask, as Apple proceeds to perform brain surgery on my Apple Account? Will they be using a pitchfork or a laser scalpel? I want others to come up with the answer to that question, not me.

I tried to do this today and it's laughably terrible. Support didn't know what was going on, I got sent all over the place trying to get a Senior Tech to help me, and in the end this was the result.

    "Hi,

I apologize for the delay I meant to reach out sooner however I wanted to be certain so I was waiting on a response ..

I did get confirmation on why you may not  be eligible to transfer purchases the primary account the purchases are migrating to must have never had any Apple Music , Voice, iTunes match subscription . In regards to why some there was confusion about why it wasn’t working for you , is likely because of it being such a new feature and wanting to ensure it was designed to work this way vs there being something else that was going on.

So again, I know this isn’t the answer we were hoping for I left some feedback about this policy/feature as I can see how this would be inconvenient for you in wanting to transfer those purchases & not being able to .

If you still need help with this case, let us know. Click the link below, and we’ll connect you with the next available expert. "

That was their lame, stupid answer. So if you have purchased music on either account you CANNOT DO THIS. They're clearly high. That was, of course, the whole point.

I spent all day trying to get this to work and after deleting my entire Family share account, cancelling Apple One, resubscribing to Apple One on the other account, rebuilding my entire family share set up, and attempting multiple times to migrate, while on with Apple support for about three hours, in the end I was unable to complete the migration with no constructive reasons as to why from support and so I had to completely dismantle everything again and put everything back to the way it was originally. This migration tool may be functional for some, but it’s absolutely not ready for prime time for others and so it’s probably best not to even try using it unless you want to be met with massive amounts of frustration and support staff who have no idea what they’re doing when it comes to how to help you.
