I talked to an Apple Hardware Development Tech yesterday at an Apple Solutions Tour event.

I asked if he knew why the new mobile macs didn't include Bluetooth capability onboard. I also told him that an external USB adapter is crappy nonsense on a portable.

I know that combined cards are availble as you can read in this <a href="http://www.networkcomputing.com/1312/1312buzz4.html"; target="_blank">Article at Network Computing</a>.

On my final question about the availability of combined 802.11 (WiFi) and Bluetooth cards he commented with the big grin of I-know-something-you-don't-but-I'm-not-yet-allowed-to-tell-you and told me to wait a little.

This would make perfect sense to me, as an Update for Airport is due incorporating 802.11g. The addition ob onboard Bluetooth would also help to boost AirPort sales and adoption further.

So I personally expect a bunch of nice software for MWSF and hope for new wireless hardware.

I think the expo will go something like this:

    1) Discussion on Jaguar's adoption rate and how successful it's been. There will most likely be a continuation on this, including topics about new Macs booting OS X only, future plans/features, and perhaps some new software titles and demos.

    2) The iMac will be updated. Jobs will say how successful it's been, with X purchases, Y% being first-time buyers. There will be the usual speed bumps with possible price adjustments and new features (faster FW/USB ports, GigE, better bus, etc?).

    3) The iMac discussion will lead into a talk on the digital hub, with possible updates to the iApps. I don't see a new digital device happening anytime soon, but I wouldn't count it out as a possibility.

That will be it. I don't think portables or the towers will be updated. I predict that portables will see their next update at Tokyo, and the towers will be updated either at Seybold or through a quiet update.

    1) Have you ever used an Avid?

    2) Do you have any idea as to how large the installed user base of Avid system is?

And I haven't heard rumors about 10.3 or new hardware. What the heck is going on?

It seems unlikely that you'll see 10.3 in January. The lack of rumours about hardware is a little disconcerting - it seems likely at this stage that there really will be no new hardware (just speed bumps).

That is of course unless Apple has faked on us all and the 970 is about to ship... but I doubt that even more than I doubt 10.3.

Think Secret said 10.3 will begin seeding in January.

I agree it would be nice to have some good rumors about new hardware for MWSF, even if it was iMac specs.

Some rumors have said to expect iApps updates before MWSF. Perhaps they'll be the indicator. If they do show up before MWSF then Apple must have something to show. Otherwise, they will be the main "new things" at MWSF.

So the Keynote will be 1.5 hours. How long it was during the MWNY02?

MWSF = Firewire Firewire Firewire, including a new Device.

The highlight for me would be....

    1. An updated PowerMac G4, processors, system bus (Rapid IO or whatever), faster more powerful.... with a shootout with similiarily-priced windows computer.

    2. Updated iMac.

    3. Updated iPod.

Apple can leave the books alone for now.

    * yawn *

What— there's a Macworld in January?

Actually, the lack of hype will be a good thing. Maybe I'll be presently surprised this time. Of course, the newest lawsuit will deter anyone from spilling more beans for a while, but I keep wondering if the lack of rumors is a good thing or a bad thing.

Good: they have something really juicy and are clamping down on everything.

Bad: iSync/iCal demos galore. And one last thing... don't let the door hit you on your way out the convention center.

like maury at railheaddesign.com said, we've hit the winter slowdown, where all the rumors grind to a halt. everyone is threatened to within an inch of their life to keep secrets, and cupertino is tight as a drum...

don't worry. EVERY year, within 8-24 hours of the keynote, someone either leaks, or some dumbass (Cough!TIMEcough!ATi) accidentally let's the cat out of the bag.

ipod has got to change. it's plateaued out into "bigger drive = upgrade" status, which will get dull after a point (hell, i don't even know if i HAVE 4,000 songs).

yep, enough iSoftware demos to drive you insane. some will be cool. some will be awful. Oh, and .Mac will be hammered down our throats again, while Steve offers purchasers of new Macs a discount on .Mac to US$68 (the test price they tried at the Thanksgiving sales at the Apple Stores).

iMac and/or eMac see slight gains. iMac = two 17" models, and one 15". eMac stays same (but different video supplier, after all the complaints).

desktop updates? i doubt it. feels like we just got the windtunnel macs.

it's weird... you would think macworld would be the hardware expo, and wwdc would be the software and technology convergence expo, but this may be just the opposite.

they do need some serious press, though... soon.

I think he is referencing the amateur/pro-sumer market. FCP is great for those segments, but pro users have spent years perfecting their chops on Avids.

Avid Express DV is taking over the pro market due to the huge installed Avid user base. We have several Avid DV systems serving as off-line systems for our "big" Avid rooms. The editors, all experienced Avid users, love the ability to off-line in their offices.

For broadcast use, DV has a higher bitrate than that used on most broadcast servers. We have found that the Avid DV output is more than adequate for these needs.
