But then I realize that these things are tanks! 2 inches thick, and pushing eight pounds with the CDROM installed, and probably over that with the extra battery you're going to need to run it for any period of time.

Then I realized - what if you took two 17" PowerBooks instead? For only four pounds more, you'd get two 1GHz processors, two 1440x900 displays, two 60GB hard drives, two OpenGL graphics cards - two of everything. All you'd need to bring is a short ethernet cable to cluster them using their Gigabit Ethernet. And for traveling, you could stack them together, and they'd still not be any thicker than the ThinkPad.

So, depending on how you look at it, dual 17" PowerBooks may very well be practical for the serious computer user on the go

You must have incredibly deep pockets.

    Notice any difference?

The difference in size is probably simply a matter of after-the-fact scaling.

The difference in headers is likely a matter of timing, of when the web page images were captured: Under the leading theory that this was an accident that occurred while updating the online store's web page, someone was likely manually copying individual files for the tiled graphics that comprise the above images. If you look at the Apple web site in its current form, you'll see that the two pieces that don't match in your comparision are in fact two different GIFs -- step1titlepowermacg4.gif and step1bullet1powermac.gif. A manual file-at-a-time update would easily explain why the page was seen one way at one time, and other way soon after. The person doing this would have had no idea they were accidently editing a live web page.

In other circumstances, I might consider my own explanation grasping at straws, but given that Apple has had a whole day to report that they'd "had a problem with their web site, and apologize for any confusion", a web-page update accident still seems by far the most likely explanation.

Yeah, I'm right there with you. It seemed the last day or two the activity had died down a bit and so I just decided to drink and watch tv over reading the same old rumors....... but then BAM!!! This is the stuff I like to see just days before an event!

I've gone through nineteen pages of comments and nothing from Lemon Bon Bon. I enjoy his comments all the time! Man, where are you - are you breathing OK?? Let's hear your thoughts man!

I'm having trouble breathing alright! I get on the boards and everybody is running around screaming 'G5!' And it's 2 gig 970? (Had a side bet with myself that 2 gig would be too close NOT to breach at the outset. Privately vindicated...)

Hey...we got 'insiders from WALES! Hi! Did my 'Smeagol' training there!

So, Moki, what was that about expectations? Eh?

I still can't believe the variety of do-nuts Americans have... (Says...tooth-ache just landed...no...I don't think that has anything to do with the G5...)

Part of me, the 'conspiracy pip' in my lemon head says: 'That was an intentional leak...Apple don't make those kind of 'mistakes', do they?' Could we be talking about even higher speeds? 970 laptops? Macwhispers are talking about a major engineering effort and all out assault to get their range go GO 970! Makes sense...if they want to get growth and repair the 'damage' the G3/G4 paradigm of 'slow transition' it OUT THE WINDOW! It's all guns blazing. No one is gonna buy a G4 anything. The iMac2 looks very vulnerable right now. I think someone was right...2003 2nd half favours the patient. Apple platform is turned on its head with renewed vigour and a sense of urgency. The time to strike is NOW! Wintel are at their most confused! Kick them where it hurts!! Low end headless Mac? If Apple do to the desktops with the 970 what they've done with the laptop range then we're storming the gates of Redmond! Der-rool, der-rool. This aint the old days anymore folks. We're on the cusp of something new...a real era of greatness.

2 gig on .13 has serious implications for the Apple line come 04. A swift transition to .09 and a 980 ('Sandbagging?') chip and we could be seeing Apple on the verge of 3 gig early 2004! Apple will destroy Intel in benches. Altivec on 1 gig bandwidth? THAT'S INSANE!? 2 gig? That's about 6 gig G4, at least, on FPU!? Dual that? 12 gig G4 fpu? Prob' more like dual 8 gig G4 performance in general? This is weird. From mhz myth to MEGAHURTS INTEL! Skid the tires, Intel...you're gonna get left at the lights.

    'We're taking it back!'

    Snails in la cookin' sauce.

Lemon in a Apple-user hoard of millions...

'To the gates of Redmond! STORM THE GATES! GET THEM!!! CHARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGE!

The headers. Any more reason to believe it was real?

Not sure how TS got a different pic but i can theoretically claim I have found confirmation it's real.

The graphic that was posted last night is slightly different as others have noted. Differently font size and the "-" before each line. Because of that some claimed it to be fake. I say just the opposite. Look at www.apple.com and the Quark splash has the same "-" and looks to be the same font. So? Well, that tells me Apple is making a few minor changes the site and the Quark splash is a newer graphic then the older G4. So, once the G5 graphic goes back up, it will match the newer style text on the front page with the "-".

I don't now anything about specs but it was mentioned to me that new Powermacs are coming and that I will still be able to get a low end Powermac for $1200 (education). If that is a 1.6 ghz 970 machine that would be amazing.

I'm prolly wrong, but where the headers and the G4picture part of the original .gif? Don't think so, i think those two pictures r simply 'recreations' of what it looked like.

SJ was sitting at his desk (well, one of his desks) and typing in the copy to see how it would look in the new website ad for Monday. Instead of deleting it he accidentally posted it to the web. When an assistant came in and saw what happened the site was immedaitely shut down. Mr. Jobs will arrive on stage with his head squarely on a silver platter. Should make for a great special effect.

What if, Just What if, no one from the Wintel world joins the party?

These machines will surely make the creative world soil their pants but what about the corporate world.

I work for a fortune 500 company with 50,000+ employees, who is 100% wintel on the desktop. I don't see them swtching overnight. We might have the battle tanks to storm Redmond but I don't see any war plan.

SJ better have an enormous and incredible marketing push directed to the corporates, otherwise all of this will fall flat and end up with the current base spending money upgrading and 3% share staying at 3%.

I see the Powermacs as the backbone of market share and stuff like the iMacs and iBooks as the flesh. If Apple are looking to get fat then I believe they will do this from the high calorie consumer market.

Of course I could be talking out of my Rs.

These specs are obviously why 65% of the workstation crowd are going Apple this year! No wonder!

I've got the sneaky feeling that the 970 isn't the only surprise.

I've the feeling there's lots of other little goodies coming.

...and in all the fuss about the 'G5' specs...'Panther' has been overshadowed...yet...we know nothing about it.

    Hmmm.

Lemon Bon Bon! Just love your posts!

Yeah it seems like the G5 have finally landed. We have been waiting for years now, and in the last few weeks the waiting has gotten almost unbearable. Insane expectations, insane rumors, insane fear of being dissapointed - again. Temporary Insanity. Well, this one is going to be H U G E. Fast and furious? You bet. A killer, definately. The Fastest option WILL be the fastest option - at last.

I'm all drooling. Tingling. Fuzzy warm feeling inside.

Only two more days to go... seems like an eternity right now.

QuickSilver - get ready to be dethroned. I will get the new KING(5) to replace my old tired knight. For he will never roam the battle field again. Retired he will be, spoken of sometimes with deep respect and admiration. Never failed. Never left a battle with his head bowed. Even when the opponents were to many and too strong, he retired with head raised high. We will come back he thought... we will rule the land again some day. some day.....

The only thing I am sad about at this point is not finding out about the G5 while inside the RDF. I'm, of course, VERY happy...but just imagine what this would have felt like in the RDF. People would have *died*

I think you are right, because speed hasn't really been an issue with corporates for some time. Current machines provide all the performance one need to do Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. However, it is a jolly good start, Rome wasn't built in a day. I think the main thing going for Apple is the operating system, sell the fact that they are easy to manage, easy to lock down so that staff can't B****er them up, and are resiliant to viruses and the corporates will start to listen.

Having said this level of performance is going to attract a lot of specialists from gamers to video editing etc.
