Does it work in Panther? I found some pre-compiled binaries that don't seem to work and I can't compile the source because I don't have the dev tools. Have you gotten it to work?
the voice is an improvement, but not what i would expect considering the previous voices are many years old. disappointment
what about ichatAV. is it any better in Panther? I'm assuming its basically GM in panther, and all of the bugs are worked out. also what about the way groups are handled- is it still retarded like in the beta?

I built my own in Jaguar, minus PerlMagick...I don't have Panther...
Makes me sad to visit this page. I would sure love to hear that for $20 I can get panther. Better yet, where is that X free for teachers program link??
another question about panther networking- will it work with active directory? The servers here at the point are changing to active directory this year, and i'm worried that i wont be able to connect with my powerbook. i dont even know what AD is, but i know that they are putting it in for better command and control. And we arent supposed to have anything other than windows 2000/XP on the network.
I had a few questions about Panther. I was going to post a new topic but I decided it may as well go in here. I'm thinking of reinstalling Panther now that I have my eMac and I wanted to ask some stuff first.
1. I obtained Panther just days after WWDC from someone. Burned the disk images and got a pair of working installation CDs. I installed it on my 800 MHz iBook which didn't take to well to it - it was somewhat slow, especially with QuickTime movies. Exposé worked fine and it really helped for the tiny screen. Has QuickTime playback improved since the original developer release?
2. Can the old version update to a more recent version? I know it won't update all the way to the final release, but if I install my old build, will it update it to the latest developer build? Will Apple get on my case for doing this?
3. I'm planning on doing an archive install so I can keep my old system folder. Assuming I want to go back to Jaguar, is it as easy as rearranging my old system folder, or would I have to archive install AGAIN but this time with Jaguar? Or is an archive install not possible if you're downgrading from 10.3 to 10.2? I really want to know this before I install. The other option is to just back up all my data and partition my drive, then install Jaguar on one partition and Panther on the other. The main problem with this is that it requires a lot of shuffling files around, and if I want to eliminate Panther from my system I'd have to back up and reformat YET AGAIN to delete the unwanted partition. I'd really prefer just one partition so I don't have to get into all these problems with juggling files and items in my home folders.
Any suggestions? Should I just stay with Jaguar until Panther is officially released? I'd like to try Panther again because it's supposedly gotten much better recently, but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle especially if it'll be released in a month anyway.
Luca, good q, I would love to try it, but I think that just hang on jag because panther cant be that far away and it would save you all the hassle again... plus then you'll get a more pleasant surprise from all the extra nice goodies when you do install it

I would never use a un-released OS as a "real" day to day OS. Don't believe the hype. Jaguar still has some major problems that need to be worked out.
If you are going to try it - and god knows it is easily available - don't do anything but an erase and install on a "play" computer. I have done to get a feeling for the OS and its capabilities before moving our building over to it.
But don' believe all the hype. Panther is a really nice upgrade but it will never give you OS 9 like speeds. Luckily, it will hopefully never give you OS 9 like problems!
I knew Panther would be a leap but I guess I didn't know just how much work has been done. They must have one heck of a shrewdness of apes working in their coding labs!
I got message this after I updated from Transmit 2.5.1 to Transmit 2.6.
You know how whenever you apply an OS update or you install a new version of an application that uses the Keychain, the security agent asks you if you want to allow access? Well, now it actually explains *why* it needs you to give it access.

Well, that actually depends.
You might not get the absolute snappyness OS 9 provides when singletasking, but you will always get better performance in Panther, when there is stuff going on (like file copying, rendering, just generally). I don't know about you guys, but I never singletask. Never! So for me, Panther is giving me alot more than OS 9 speeds.

I have my website hosted with www.xrackhosting.com , sadly though, they have not been able to get Image magick working on the servers.

EDIT: Found it. http://www.apple.com/education/macosxforteachers/old/
Interesting... read the URL...
Tried it with 'new' instead, but got a 'no page'.
But then I whacked off the 'old' and got...

So it's over as of this past march....
whatever, i'll be outa here soon enough

My question is this.
From all reports I have read, Panther is said to be much faster than Jaguar. How much faster than Jaguar is Panther, exactly, (percentage wise)?
And is this speed improvement most noticable over a G3 processor, or G4 processor, or both?
Thanks in advance. m.

The Xbench GUI-test says the difference is about 60%. At least for my G4.
