iPod is a simple high-end piece that has for most of it's existance warranted the price, but it's time for a few updates IMHO. FM reciever. I'd say DAB too, only the USofA insists on mucking around with some other alternative, too bad. A line in and microphone that records directly to MP3/AAC/AIFF from either an analogue imput or a microphone. Rio will have this functionality soon and it's a great idea. I could see myself using it to record hours of voice notes, lectures, meetings, and interviews. I could see a musician making a couple of quick and dirty recordings just to get an idea or two down. I could see lots of people on the Bus tuning into the radio to get a little local talk, news, traffic, etc etc...
Come on Apple, it's time to perfect the iPod!.
At the very least they should open up the access and let someone make a device that adds these functions via the firewire port. Perhaps somethng that flips open like a clie? Have it snap over the whole back of the iPod and act as a protective case when not in use. It would prop a mic and antennea into a good position, though it would cover the scrol wheel when closed. Not a huge problem though.
I just emailed my rep at CDW to inquire. He replied:
" I have a note on that part number that it might not be released, let me see what's going on with that. In the meantime, how does your mom like that Apple?"
I have to be honest though they ususally do not have the new stuff listed until two to three weeks after Apple releases something. Prime example are the new Powerbooks. Although he usually can find it before they list on the CDW site.
He came back with:
"Look at 411136 - that is the 10G MAC iPod"
and
"they are not sure yet of a date for the PB's. For the iPod, I am showing that it has a discontinued date already so it might not get released, I would stick with the number I gave you.
My 5GB iPod crashed a couple of weeks ago, and I sent it into Apple because it is still under warranty. They sent me a brand new one, identical to my old one. This must mean they still have some of the 5GBs still around. The turn around time was like one day from the time they recieved it until they sent a new one out. Do they keep a stockpile of older units?

I would assume they keep a small amount of older ones for a short amount of time to cover the warrantees and whatnot. However it has happend to my friend that his powerbook g3 fried under warrannty and he managed after asking nicely and groaning and then yelling after they failed to fix his powerbook twice to get a titanium 500mhz back when that was the new lowend.
I hope this means the 5gb iPod drops to 199. Alot of people would buy it then ... me included. Here's to hoping it cost 199
how funny would it be if that patent that we saw a while ago about color changing cases was for the ipod? what if the solid state wheel were to change color?

I think that patent was kind of clear it was for a desktop machine.
they definately stockpile....my original 10gig died (with scroll-wheel) and they sent me bad a brand new one, but not the new slimmed down solid-state one.
Just to speculate even further...Xtreme Mac, a maker of iPod accessories have cut back on the colours and finishes of it's current cases. When I inquired why, they said they were coming out with a new design.
Of course this probably means nothing and I'm not even sure if they would be privy to info of a new iPod.
But can you imagine how many frickin songs one can put on a 40gb drive in MPEG-4 format?

That is hopeful...
ThinkSecret now proposes new iMacs for Tuesday. WHEN are the iPods coming? They are out of stock at almost all CompUsa's, and they are not ordering more. I have not gone back to my AppleStore, but I presume the same applies.
Impatience and Apple Product Release Schedules are most definitely NOT a winning combination.
If the new iPod does not come Tues, I am going to.... wait another week, I suppose.
Other boards are reporting that a 40GB model with an aluminum back, and a $199 5GB model with a plastic back, are coming on Tuesday (2/4), along with a price drop and speed bump on iMacs.

and does firewire 800 work with firewire 400 if you had some kind of adapter? would hate to have to get a new computer just for a new ipod.
obviously fw 800 is needed for future videopod or whatever it will be.

Yes.
<strong>
Just like the pb17 - new iPod screens and controls will react to ambient light...
</strong><hr></blockquote>
What happens when its in your pocket?

i'd imagine the ambiant light sensors are 'off' when the lock is on. maybe just the lock itself is illuminated..
just a guess though

Obviously a engineering nightmare....

But if you look at the <a href="http://www.cdw.com/shop/search/results.asp?key=ipod" target="_blank">CDW iPod shipping times</a> they are all 1-2 weeks except 10GB (4-6 Days) for the 20GB MAC/Win models.
I keep bugging him to get me some info about when the new 15" Powerbooks are coming.
