Apple may have called it the year of the laptop because they are just using that as a back up if the 970s ran into trouble and were not going to be available for the 2nd half, but somehow I think that Apple probably knew that IBM was going to be ready and the 17 inch screen is just an intro. Introduce the 17 inch to get peoples mouths watering and then slap a 970 in there get them going crazy. Just throwing a 970 in there would get anyone going crazy. If Apple does release a 970 in the Fall for the PBs, watch out Dell, cause you got one angry and powerful competitor coming for ya. But I'm sure that Dell would not care anyway.

"No cable and no beer make Homer go..." --- "Crazy?" --- "Don't mind if I doooo!!"

Go crazy's an understatement -- I get faint thinking about the prospect; almost makes me want to get a decent paying job this summer (instead of doing barely-any-money research that's good for my career, meh). 970-based PowerBooks -- a definite, drool-inspiring notion. Apple and its customers would have a merry Christmas, and if they're being so picky about the 17" case NOW with the G4, it could mean they want to have it right for something much better (even though the 970 uses less power).

What a year this could be...keep the gospel coming!

All I can say is, "Here's to the Crazy Ones!" If Apple does this, I will have a good Christmas, Apple will have a good Christmas, IBM will have a good Christmas, and MS will be scared *hitless.

I think Apple needs to concentrate on making their hardware both feature-rich and competitively priced. When I use my iBook, I'm never thinking "Wow, a 900 MHz processor would be so much better than this pokey-slow 800 MHz." I doubt I'd see any difference in speed unless I had a 1.2 GHz or faster processor. Even then, it wouldn't be a huge mind-boggling difference, it would be subtle. However, I'm always thinking about how an extra 10 GB would be really nice to have. And it's also fairly common for me to think, "Man, I kinda wish I had a faster Combo drive" or "Boy, a 13.3" widescreen at 1152x768 would be really sweet!" As long as Apple can't control their chip speed, they have their hands partially tied. But they can be competitive in other areas where they have access to all the same technology that PC makers do.

I say, make an iBook like this:

    1 GHz G3

    Radeon 9000

    40 GB

    Combo drive

    256 MB RAM

XGA screen (size doesn't even matter though the current 12" enclosure or a 5 lb 14" enclosure would be the best)

    $1200

That would compete well against a PC laptop which would have very similar specifications and price. Sure, the processor is much slower and so is the bus speed, but that's not nearly as important as what you really get with the computer. Also, they should put a DVD-ROM on the low end. Laptops ALL need DVD drives.

That would be one sweet iBook, but the thing that would turn me off is the processor. I would spend the extra $$ to get a G4. Anyway, once Apple puts a G4 into the iBook and the 970 in the PBs, then that will be the ultimate line up for portables from Apple. The 970 for that extra kick and the G4 for the person who wants something speedy, but does not want to spend that much.

next revision: still a G3 (probally this spring)

next next rev: G4 (probally this fall/winter)

we are both right if you think the second revision will be a G4. that was my point. you can pin me down on that not on a "when.

what we can expect is something i would throw some cash in not "when" exactly because for me januari 2004 is still winter... and the same timeframe.

... wow, it's spring already, time flies...
