Just asking because when I first boot up there is a noticable darker area on the screen running up the middle of my screen. I turn up the brightness completely and this goes away. Then I'm able to turn the brightness to suit my needs without the darker area reappearing.

Well, mine looks like a circle, about eight inches in diameter, but centered off-screen (so the dark area encompasses a 1/4 circle, where the screen is darker), roughly towards the lower right-hand corner. It tends to go away --- "warm up" or whatever. This tends not to go away by adjusting the brightness to 100%, then down again.

"Warm up", thanks those are the words I was looking for. Seems like I have a similar backlighting problem. It really doesn't bother me, yet. If it gets worse, I'll be testing my Applecare purchase, I would think Apple would fix this problem, wouldn't they?

Case and applecare have arrived. Not as nice a case as I would expect for that kind of money...but built well. 'book is supposed to ship on or before 12/18. I'm thinking since it is BTO it may well avoid problems....I assume it must be touched and tested by human hands that way. They have to install the 5400 HD and one 512 RAM module...so hopefully it will be perfect when it gets here. We shall see.

My bet is on a week from today for arrival.

Well last night my Pismo shut down because the battery was drained and it wouldn't recognize the A/C power cord.

If you haven't tried it already, resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit) may help.

I might do that, but when I fool with the cord it fixes it. I think it's a physical problem.

BTW, the 'book shipped this morning...several days early. I now predict Tuesday or Wednesday arrival!

My pbook shipped 2 weeks ahead of schedule, and it was perfect, and still is perfect upon arrival. Amazing for a BTO model.

In that case, as your old PowerBook is i) out of warranty and ii) you have a replacement on the way, I recommend Torx drivers and a soldering iron.

It's not out of warranty. It's going back to get fixed after the new one is here and I move everything to it. It's in good shape otherwise and I've had some interest in people buying it. I'll do best offer or possibly ebay.

    These PowerBooks suck, QA-wise. Wait.

My sister has one. . . Seems to be fine (1Ghz)

"This girl I know" has one. . . Seems to be fine (1.25Ghz)

Two friends have them. . . seem to be fine

    That's 4 for 4. not a big sample, but still, 4 for 4.

My PB G4 12"/867 was perfect -- until it was stolen. Obviously news of the quality control problems hasn't filtered down to the thieves yet.

    That sucks big time.

Looking at your sig - are you telling us that your insurance only permitted you to get an iMac of the same quality (only with more RAM) that you already owned and you were left high and dry with regard to the replacement of the PB and PM? That sucks big time too!

I'm still talking to the insurance company about the claim. I am reasonably optimistic about getting a check for total replacement value. The complicating factor is that I'm not the only victim -- the thieves hit 20-25 offices in my complex -- so there's a lot of paperwork involved.

I bought the iMac myself the day after the robbery, with my own funds, since I needed a machine right away.

Once I get the insurance check, I'm going to buy a replacement 1 GHz 12" PB.

The thieves hit 20-25 offices... was any of it caught on video? That's bloody incredible!

Good luck with your claim mpls244 - I hope it all works out for you.

Thanks for the support -- it helps.

Answer - no video. My office building backs up to a creek, which is very scenic and soothing, but also provides cover to anyone approaching the building from that side at night.

There's been a lot of talk post-robbery about why such a vulnerable building had such low tech security. At a minimum, they're putting in an alarm system.

And to answer the other question - my office is in Minnetonka, very close to the Ridgedale exit off 394.
