I like how people complain and complain about their computer problems (hardware or software) when they get a lemon, but will get their lemon car fixed over and over again without a single complaint. We should all feel lucky that we have a computer that doesn't break down as much as so many others out there that do. Macs are kind of like Hondas (not price or marketshare-wise though ) they are the best, they are reliable, but every once in a while a lemon will sneak through to the market. Wintell machines are more like GM cars, crappy all around.

I purchased a wonderful working iBook G3 on December 30, 2002 from MacWarehouse, computer arrives on January 2, 2003. It has a broken keyboard, oh well no biggie called Apple and got a new one. Hard drive makes a funny noise, called Apple, and they said that this is normal for laptops (I never thought it would be, but hey...), power adapter failed and cause a short circuit in the home, and I got a new one (had to pay shipping). My iBook screen starts acting up a couple of days ago, and I come down with strep and can't call. I call yesterday and talk, they won't fix it because I am 4 days out of warranty. They said it will cost me $544-$1400 to fix the problem. Guess what, I am a student, and don't have that kind of cash. I don't care, I will never buy Apple, and my school is not purchasing any G5s this summer as we had told Apple, they just lost a $400k account because of $500. Bye Apple. Can't wait to sue their arses off.
Good luck with your Dell/Compaq-HP/Sony/Microsoft laptop... I'm sure that'll give you NO PROBLEMS AT ALL...
I think it's clear that buying AppleCare is not really an option any longer. I let the AppleCare sign up period for my iBook pass about seven months ago, and I hope I don't regret it (I wanna use the iBook until the end of this year).
However, Jacob, as a rule, I hope you didn't mention your $400k thing to the people at Apple. Threatening folks like that sounds like arrogant boasting, and will only get you treated much, much worse in the real world. No one believes claims like that, particularly from someone so young, and no one likes being threatened. A conciliatory attitude and requesting to speak to higher ups when things don't move as you would like them to is always the way to go.
I call yesterday and talk, they won't fix it because I am 4 days out of warranty.
IMHO, unless Apple has dramatically changed policies, we're not hearing the whole story. I, unlike Mr. Wootten, am a former Apple Employee and as such have a fairly good understanding of what the Warranty policies are. Fact of the matter is, the "12 month" warranty was actually >> 13 << months. If people called our CSC within a month of the 12 month warranty expiring, we'd authorize a warranty repair. Again, unless Apple has dramatically changed warranty authorization criteria, there shouldn't be an issue.
In addition, we had numerous cases where a customer would argue the point and we'd authorize a warranty repair even if it was a year or two out of warranty.
I REALLY wonder what Mr. Wootten said on the telephone to get shut down so completely. Jacob, be reasonable but firm with the CSC rep you're speaking with, and I'm quite certain that you'll be able to get your iBook repaired under a "special warranty condition".
My iBook came out of warranty in September of 2003. I began to have problems (again) last week. I took it into my Apple Store last week over three months out of warranty. Screen goes black, flickers, etc (the oft reported defect). I was originally given a $300 quote. I asked to talk to the manager and then called up Apple from the store and explained everything - motherboard getting replaced in the past, etc and the same problem happening 5 months down the road. I wasn't nasty. I treated these guys very kindly and they did the same and ALWAYS seemed to make the best effort to help.
And now my iBookis being repaired at no cost to me. I didn't threaten Apple or say it's cost them money. I told them I loved their products and really wanted to sort this out. My experiences with Apple support have been great. I dealt with the lieks of MS, Dell, and Gateway for years. Apple's support is light years ahead - as are their products.
Acting childish and demanding things is not the way to do it. Explain your situation and don't threaten them. You think they'll believe that a young college student with no $$$ to repair his laptop has any influence? And if your school thinks they can do better with Dell or Gateway, good luck with that. The Macs will be better and cheaper in the long run.
This is nothing. I once had a Sony Vaio laptop. Four days *before* the expiration of my warranty, the unit stopped powering up. They refused to honor their warranty since it was so close to expiration.
Okay, I learned my lesson, not to post topics in anger! They are going to cover it, thank God. And to who asked, I may have been mad but didn't threaten them with $400k worth of computers, and i meant to type $40k anyways. Sorry! Happy Mac World '04!

You have every right to be pissed. Apple didnt do right by you and I would be just as upset. I must say that Macs tend to be more reliable than most brands but since Apple has been outsourcing manufacturing for the past few years they arent as reliable as they used to be.
I dont blame you for not wanting to buy their product again. Unfortunately the other companies are the same way. All they think about is the bottom line but for a company with as small a market share as Apple you would think they would be more accomodating. Unfortunately Apple has always been arrogant, following the lead of their arrogant CEO.
How I get around it is this way-buy used macs. I have never bought a new Mac, always used. Ive never had a problem this way since they have been refurbished personally, not off a conveyor belt.
As for the obnoxious replies you've received from some folks here, dont fret it. Many Apple users are arrogant as well.............................................. .................................................. ...

Yes, maybe the first post and topic title was a little huffy, but it was my only way of venting, and with all the problems happending lately with the iBook and people knowing about them you guys are really understanding.

My mothers Chevy Celebrity is 17 years old and still going. It outlasted my mazda 626 and Honda Accord.
Buick and Cadillac are rated higher than Nissan, Mercedes, and BMW in reliability. Thats not to say all GM cars will be this reliable, but they ain't crappy....................
Comments
(Lockination in progress)
lesson 1: You would think Apple would have a lemon policy. I guess it depends on how short a time span elapsed between those first 3 problems.
lesson 2: Applecare is one extended warranty that's totally worth the price of admission.

Yet, throwing that $400k nonsense in there just makes us chuckle.

Read his posts.
Apple fixed his iBook.
The edu account was $40k, not $400k.
Good god, people, learn to read and/or play nicely.
