Tell me, is it worth getting GarageBand if you don't have any MIDI keyboards, or any musical instruments of any kind to plug in?

Secondly, is there a "virtual" keyboard you can use the computer's keyboard or mouse to interact with, or something? m.

I hear (DAMM YOU APPLE) that the built in one can only be used by your mouse. However MidiKeys (113KB) can use your computer keyboard and works with GarageBand. a friend confirmed this for me.

Thanx all for the compliments, as I said, I did use Reason quite a bit for loops, but to be honest I think the sound quality of GB is better. I'll try to write something new today using GB only. I think it is well exciting, would any of you guys be interested in a GarageBand song site? It's early days but I really do feel that their will be some great tracks produced.

First, great tracks so far! I feel left out, so I'm going to violate the rules and post a track I made using Soundtrack. The loops are probably somewhat different from those available in GarageBand, but my assumption is they are compatible with each other (I have yet to test this)...so I'm not violating the rules TOO much.

I need to head down to guitar center today and pick up a 1/4" -> 1/8" cable, as the one I had was broken. I was very pissed about that yesterday when the FedEx guy came with my copy of iLife.

So here's my track, it's called Piano Groove. It's definitely rough, but it was my first ever attempt at composing a song via just loops. Enjoy:

I'm sure you know this, but get a nice quality cable, monster or such, it's insane the amount of difference you'll get, I'm using a pretty cheap cable, and the buzzing and static noises are really hard to keep down, but when you use a nice monster cable, it's clear as a bell.

    First attempt

The only instrument that's not a loop in that one is the bass guitar, which I played with my mouse on the on-screen keyboard, so I didn't get fancy. Once I get my Korg digital piano working as a MIDI workstation, I'll get a lot more use out of GB. But I had a song in mind while I was making that one:

    Original.

That's a demo of a song my band recorded over Christmas.

Then I got an idea to try to construct a song with a verse-chorus form, but using only loops.

    Second attempt.

I have to say I'm kind of pleased with how that one turned out.

Ditto the earlier post about GB changing my sleeping patterns. I was like a kid with a new toy on Christmas... I didn't want to go to bed.

Dont forget to pan the instruments left, center and right so you get a nice stereo spread.

There's a GUI keyboard that's about the size of a spider monkey's penis

...and much like the spider monkey's penis, you can latch onto the keyboard and pull on it to make it bigger.

Cool stuff everyone!!!! At this rate we'll have an AI album soon! Well after only having a few hours sleep, I started to create a GB only track Slinky

I have a TiPb 550MHz and it runs out of cpu power after about 6 virtual instruments at this point I have to bounce the tracks down. I need a G5!!!!!!!!!

Serious, even on my lovely 1.25ghz 15" it starts to really lag out after a handful of tracks.

Clavifunk has 3 live tracks in it, and it KILLS GB whenever I try and work with it.

I started working on another project, have 1 live bass track, 2 live loops and 6 or 7 virtual instruments and it's really starting to chug.

I do hope that apple can do something to improve performance, I mean, this is a consumer app after all, kind of sad that it needs a g5 to run comfortably once things start to build up.

devious apple! it's all a plan to sell more g5s

hey slinky is pretty cool, though that horn loop in the beginning(and end), I'm getting really tired of that one, I've heard like 6 people use it so far.

It's a great loop, but...darn, it's gotten old pretty fast.

I think I'm going to need the jampack well, I think I'll wait till they update the software some.

Someone up above was complaining about not being able to do a bunch of tracks at once. As a recommendation, and this may be obvious, but once you've finished parts of the song that aren't going to change (drums and bass maybe...and some ambient stuff if you like that kind of thing), export that mix to aiff, then start a "new song" and import that as one of the tracks...so there you've freed up 2-3 tracks to use for other stuff. You can keep doing that more and more as you build your song if you wish.

Yes, it would be nice to have 10 tracks all with 3 effects each, etc...but there is a limit.

Put it in your Music folder.

The link to that file would look like this:

    Code:

    <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/DOTMACACCOUNT/.Music/FILENAME>Song</a>;
