Hey! Steven R that's a heavy sounding track.... cool!! Just blew the cans off my head!

I use a Roland PC300 keyboard which works a treat and has is 4 octave full size keys and velocity sensitive. It's down side however, especially for dance music is that it only has one extra contoller other than pitch bend and modulation. I'd recommend Oxygen8 although much smaller those extra controllers are damn usefull. Also check out Propellerheads Reason 2.5 [website] fantastic music software that is much more affordable than Logic or Cubase and more contollable than GB

Wrong Robot.... I'm with you on the Jam Pack, I'm ditching the tired horn riff right away!!! heehehehe Yep GB is as slow as iPhoto was on its initial release, but I'm still really happy with it.

I know I keep going on about Reason, but I can have WAY more, and complicated tracks before it complains about cpu or disk speed.... i.e. 20 - 30 tracks!!!!! Apple definately wanna sell G5's..... My poor TiPb's old and decrepid now better get a new machine!!!!

2 octave keyboards stink. that's what I'm using now, an oxygen8, and sure it will work for electronic music, but I'm making funk and R&B stuff!

4 ocatves is pretty much more than you'll need most of the time.

yeah, I use Reason too, and I have made some really complicated tracks with loads of effects and suck, it's a pain that GB craps out after a fraction of that.

Liner Notes: recorded in the early evening of 1/16/04 mere moments after loading iLife4 onto my iMac FP G4. This was my quick attempt to use multiple intruments and beats to create a funky, 70's parliment like song. i obviously have no clue what i am doing, but had a fun time doing it. sort of like masterbation for the ears.

the song uses multiple beats, drums, bass lines and multiple synths. it also has an acoustic guitar line (i like to add one instrument that doesn't fit with the others and try to make it seem normal).

This is a short and upbeat track. the vocals at the end are two voices. one unprocessed, one with ambient echo added.

i had to shut the computer room door to record this vocal so the my children wouldn't think me a larger idiot than they already do.

except for the end vocal, all instruments are software loops.

liner notes added at the fine suggestion of crazychester.

That is a sexy keyboard, the drum pad would be great for programming beats, I hate working with a keyboard when I make beats, and apple's drum layout is way different than reason.

HOWEVER, apple's drum layout is also a lot more than 16 drums, so that drum pad might not work how you'd like it to, I don't know how to remap keys in GB(if you even can) so you might end up with a crappy set up that you can't change.

Ok, here is a bit of something I am working on, GB drums,GB Bass, my acoustic, my electric guitars.

it's not finished yet, I have some more guitars to do and maybe break up those monotonius drums, add some vocals and blah blah blah.... working on songs never really ends, you just have to walk away at some point.

Heres a song I just made in the last hour using my new M-Audio Keyboard (the Radium, not the version Apple sells. Mine's better :P)

That bassline is very very much like 'the chicken' by pee wee ellis(and later covered many times by jaco)

Actually, you wasted your money, unless you have reason or something else you will be using it with, the only difference between the keystation 49e and the radium is that the radium has a bunch of parameter control knobs. If you are only going to be using garageband those will all go unused.

I know the extra knobs are useless in GB, but I'm hoping to get Reason soon, so I figured I'd be prepared.

Yeah, reason is good stuff, way better synth capabilities than GB, and also has A LOT more drum kits, but, it lacks live audio recording, and a lot of the default samples blow, I'd say they are best used in conjunction with one another.

yes, using samples and loops always sounds like something else.... I went through every bass loop in GB and they all are very generic, as are all the other instrument parts. I've heard them all before, and that is why I couldn't bring myself to use the guitar parts. If I had a bass here I would do it myself, same with the drums.

remember this version is only to set up a rough draft of a song, ya know to try and set a mood for each part. When I am fairly happy with composition, it will be turned loose for my band to play with, then the bass and drums will lose that "looped" sound, and the transitions will become more expressive.

Like I implied in my original post, it's a work in progress.

Here's a short island-y song I threw together using mostly loops (I played the very end)
