They should rename this "beta' iChat HIV or STD or something, it is full of bugs and crap.
Yeah... like "The AIM service could not send the message: You have sent too much data too quickly. Please wait a little while before sending more" bug.. -_- I hardly type anything and that message appears... Annoying...
The only gripe I have with the new version is that the application menu now says "iChat (Beta)". But I can fix that... I just wish it didn't go out to download like that.
It's memory allocation is all screwed up, it shows video chat capability on people's names that dont have it...VERY BETA. Also, where are profiles?
Explain the first one - why you think that.
The second? Don't see it here.
Profiles? Works just like it always has, for me.
Have you used iChat before, or is this your first experience with it? Serious question, not a flame. Other IM clients have features that iChat is missing, and it bugs some folks.
But it's not because it's beta, but because they just aren't there.
Just tried with another buddy, and it failed, but he hasn't been able to get it to work with another AIM5.5/Windows user either, so I suspect it's just plain his setup.
Tell me, how many of you have successfully had audio chats with Windows AOL users with this beta?
I want to know if it works, before I download it. m.
As far as I know the only way to have an audio chat with a Windows user is if they have a one-way video chat with you... I think it's stupid that you can't do an audio chat independant of the video chat.... But that's just me.

I set up my PowerBook/iSight next to my peecee gaming rig, connected a ADS PyroCam that I had lying around and signed up for a new AIM screen name.
It took a couple of tries because the XP machine kept saying that there was no camera attached, but it finally worked great - audio and video (the iSight had vastly better video although kinda dark).

-_- yeah.. but YOU CAN'T DO SOLO AUDIO CHATS! Sorry for the caps but that's the feature I had hoped they would add.
i was checking out netzero as a backup for my broadband and when i travel. it lists there"chat" is compatible with msn messanger, ichat, aol etc how come apple can't make it compatible with those as well OK av may not work with all, but i wish ichat was able to communicate with friends that have ms mess. will that be in the future??? how does netzero do it, if apple can't. take a look
I think he means that if they took the time to make it so you can have cross-platform video chats, why not make it so you can have cross-platform audio chats as well? Maybe someone will release a little hack to make it think you have a video camera hooked up, so you can do audio chats between AIM 5.5 and iChat 2.1. Either that, or it'll get added to the final release of iChat 2.1.

Only works in Panther. (What % of mac users have Panther?)
Only works with Windows XP. (Same issue as above.)
Only works with XP users that have AIM 5.5 installed. (Similar to above.)
I am assuming that an XP user can install AIM 5.5 and not belong to AOL. (A stupid question but I just want to be sure.}

You dont need to be an AOL member to use AIM 5.5. You need a screen name and a damned email account capable of handling spam.

...and the final version will be included free with OS 10.4 or $29.95 for Panther users.
edit: For those who can't tell the difference: I am just kidding.
