...I have a Mac with iSight at work and a PC with WinXP at home. I have a Logitech Zoom.
I hafta say, the quality of the video coming from the PC sucks, when it works at all. The Mac sends nice sharp video, the PC sends something that lloks like circa 1992 QuickTime video, and it rarely works right.
I sure wish Apple would release a consumer tower so I can replace this Win XP hunk of crap once and for all.
A solo audio chat is where you can audio chat with someone without having the need for video... For example.. iChat AV users can audio chat among each other.. It should be that iChat users can also audio chat with AIM users that have the TALK capability. AIM 4.3 for OS 9 has the talk feature.. iChat should be able to communicate with that too (using the TALK feature). Did I clear it up?
I think he means that if they took the time to make it so you can have cross-platform video chats, why not make it so you can have cross-platform audio chats as well? Maybe someone will release a little hack to make it think you have a video camera hooked up, so you can do audio chats between AIM 5.5 and iChat 2.1. Either that, or it'll get added to the final release of iChat 2.1.
Moving iChatAV to being crossplatform may have increased the value of using iChat but on the other hand, it lowered the value of buying a mac. For example, I was considering buying a new mac for my family living overseas just so I can iChat with them. But since AIM is now compatible with iChatAV, I just told them to download the Windows AIM.
I wanted to recommend that they buy an iSight. But since there aren't any drivers that will utilize the full functionality of the camera, they will probably get something else.
In my opinion, opening iChatAV to Windows users can only benefit Apple if they can sell more iSight cameras in the process. Apple needs to hurry with the iSight drivers.
I am so frustrated right now... I am at John Carroll University in Cleveland and my friend using a PC is at Michigan State. We have tried everything possible and this thing does not work... Very frustrating. I video chat with my parents mac to mac all the time. I tried with my dad today while he was at a hotel but no luck.... What is going on with iChat... This is very frustrating.... Oh well anyone iChat from a hotel with some luck...

I keep getting firewall problems trying to use the iChat 2.1 beta with AIM 5.5. I remember reading some other comments about firewall problems too, but nothing specific about which ports need to be opened to make iChat and AIM happy for video chatting.
Still no joy. I forwarded up every port from 1024-65535 (except 1026, which my router reserves), for both TCP and UDP, to my Mac at a fixed IP address... and still, video chat between my PC at work and my Mac at home fails. AFAIK, I'm not behind any firewall at work, and we don't use NAT, so I've only adjusted my router at home.
I'm suspicious that firewall settings are even the issue, since iChat video Mac-to-Mac works fine, and because I've seen intermittent firewall errors when trying to video chat between my PC and Mac at home... yes, firewall issues could arise if the connection is being mediated over the WAN, and not my LAN, but I wouldn't think a real firewall problem would be intermittent -- it should always fail if some necessary port(s) is/are blocked, or always work if the necessary port(s) is/are open.

Yeah that's exactly what I meant. Thanks Luca.

Tell Apple how they can improve this software
The only way iChat AV is gonna get anywhere near perfect is if we all test the beta and tell Apple that it blows.

Yes. So in other words, an audio chat.
Anyone know which ports I should to open up?
