So your saying if we click on the ads a lot than just hit the "back" button to go back to AI, AI still gets money even if we don't buy anything? Sweet, I'm goin on a clicking rampage tonight. I've now made it my lifelong goal to single handedly rid AI of banner ads by clicking on them so much that we'll never need them again.

Well, yes and no. Our invisible overlords get money to run the servers and line their pockets. AppleInsider "the community" will likely never see a dime.
So, if you feel like being charitable, click them by all means. I will not be, though. Give them money by participating with the ads and you just give them more reason to keep the ads or add more of them.
I, for one, welcome our invisible supreme overlords, you insensitive clod!
Crap, wrong site...
Anyhow, just so everyone doesn't think I'm all negativity... maybe we can build a quick web based form where members can go to report offending banner ads rather than creating a new post in here all the time.
You know how we only build new forums based on demand? I'm surprised nobody has suggested a "Bastard Advertisements" forum.
This trojan dropping $hit is out of hand. Suddenly I remember why I dropped Doubleclick in the deny table of my border router - and it wasn't just because of their Dartmail subsidiary spamming the hell out of everything connected to anything, anywhere.
grrrr.....grumble......mumble.....clicketyclick - there - awl gawn.
Ooh, Looks like someone's trying to create their own ad server on AI... but it's not working.
I keep having my browser hang as it waits for the ad server to give an error (about 30 seconds).
To prevent this, those of you with PithHelmet and Safari can add a rule to block "\\/adserve\\/" and AI loads fine again. To be more specific, you could put an "appleinsider\\.com" in front of it, but I figure any URL with adserve in it probably ain't good.
It's totally hush-hush from the supreme overlords.
Too bad because if we knew we could get around the "No sponsor"-policy the gods have adopted. Simply put a blueish-grey banner up and pay the small amount they ask for it.
Can you get a preffered webpage when you buy banner placements at Valueclick?
Whoa! that was scary! I was reading your post and I never hard sound before. I didn't believe you. I think there is a delay because as soon as I finished reading it "Hi there" BURST through my speakers at well over 100 db. My computer is muted now but I jumped and panicked and closed the window before I could get any info for you.
*thumps chest to start heart again* There it goes...
What about the new talking banner ad on this site?
"Hi there, my name is Tina"
I hate it.
yes, "tina" just scared the sh!t outta me, too. what the hell? hey tina, do you REALLY think i GIVE A CRAP what you think about speeding up my computer? no. go tell that to the company you work for who thought it would be a good idea to STARTLE THE BEJEEZUS out of me.
BTW, she's a Flash document. I couldn't get her to save and I'm not sure I'm smart enough to figure out how to link to her. Here's the page source when she was displayed on a Future Hardware thread:

It's on every page now, even while I type this and the time i replied to the thread about this in General Discussion. It's annoying. There is no way this will bring any kind of profit so take it down...

if so, by which method do banner ads *generally* work?
Generally more of the pay-per-click method.

Note to self...clicking on ads = bad.

Arg. I saw one, for MS LiveMeeting, and had Kasper squelch that. I didn't see the others.
I'll point him to this thread, and we'll get those whacked.

I was pre-warned by this thread but it still startled and annoyed me.
