... and will go on sale at the Apple retail stores and other resellers shortly. Annoucement to be made today along with one other?

I can confirm this. In some countries there will also be a rebate when you order by phone.
Bulletin: Apple Store is down for updating (8:25 EDT)!

This is good news. Now, if Apple would ship a version with a SuperDrive...
No sense marching to the same old tired drummer! This is good news indeed and should give Apple a boost. Great price for what one gets.
iMac sales are also below expectations. I wouldn't expect a 17" LCD due to prohibitive costs.

Looks like Apple is trying to clear excess eMac inventory, presumably due to slow sales in education.

um, no. y'see, the eMacs were only officially shipping as of the end of May... y'know, about a week ago. so there wasn't any backlogged inventory. just 10,000? emails in steve's account asking where they can buy a new eMac. Steve took 10,000, multiplied by the cost of an eMac, sh*t his pants, and made this announcement.
p.s. i guess this and quicktime 6 preview are the "announcements" that apple was going to make today. i dunno, the "e is for everyone"Mac seems pretty big to me.
? that's just my hypothetical estimate.
Looks like Apple is trying to clear excess eMac inventory, presumably due to slow sales in education.

slow sales?!?
where did you get that from?
emac has done very good (for the time it is available).
[quote]iMac sales are also below expectations.

is that so?!?

i think it is the next logical step.
not everyone needs a dual 1.2ghz weapon with2gigs ram and a hand full of free pci and agb slots.
most of the consumers at home need a computer for wrighting letters and email, surfing the web, gaming, playing around with dv's, maybe building the families website and want something that blends in with the furniture at a good price.
...and stevie gave them just that.
Education sales are just starting since delivery of the product in quantity is beginng this month.
It is true that all vendors are seeing a slowdown in K12 sales at the moment as school boards are cutting back on purchases. It is, however, still too soon to make any judgement on the eMac.
The typical Apple negativism still prevails around here from some. I'm waiting for the whinning about the consumer eMac not having this.. or having that. The more things change, the more they stay the same!

For some reason, Apple doesn't always like to follow the lead of its customers. The eMac turnaround is good news, and hopefully a sign the company is looking more to the kind of value it's customers want. (Let's sell millions of these through Walmart and Costco.)
Now if we could only get that PDA we've been asking for...
Me, brainwashing people, that's impossible!
I don't know about 17" LCD, but I think definetly some iMac upgradage at MWNY. the iMac and eMac are a touch to similar for the iMac to be costing $300 more.

Superdrive. Apple only charges $200 for it, though, so there must be some other nefarious purpose, here...
Maybe the cool chrome swivel-thingy?

the emac is perfect for small office, may be i replace the imac 266 of my secretary by a emac at the end of the year.
if so - BIG deal....
emac is a step backwards NOT forwards
boooooring.
Thanks. My prediction of whinning has begun. For your information the Think Secret article stressed that it was not going to be a big thing. Only people who misread or speculated thought so. Oh well, the beat goes on.
