400:1 contrast is mediocre. There are Dell branded LCDs with 800:1 contrast ratios. The 16ms reponse time is good though--infact, probably the fastest in the industry for the size. Apple's older LCDs had horrendous 40ms pixel response times.
16ms = 62.5 frames per second (max)
HDTV is 60fps. It's clear where Apple is targetting these LCDs...
As for the person who asked about HDTV, you don't need a tuner. All you need is a G5 (or a very fast G4), lots of storage and Panther.
idbe interested in a comparison between those dells with the "800:1" contrast ratios and the apple..... i have a feeling the dells would be dissapointing.
16ms is really good and im not sure where you got the 40ms from. i dont think apple has ever had a display that slow with the exception of the original midnight blue studio display in 1998.
Anyone notice how they go on and on about the new monitor's anodized aluminum bezel, and then say that there will be a new iSight that ataches via a magnet?
That would be hilarious if they hadn't thought that through.
From what I can gather, you are no longer able to turn on the computer by using the monitor power button. It's been a while since Apple disabled the capability to start up the computer via the keyboard or Powermate.
How many people out there placed their PowerMac G4 or G5 under their desks/behind something? Am I the only one who will now have to sacrifice crucial desk space so that I can now access the PowerMacs power button? Or should I buy a leftover previous generation 20"? Hmm.

Why are you turning it off? Sleep it.
How often do you turn it off? My iMac has been on for 2 years not including various power outages & unpluggings for changing the room around.

Yeah, I could do that. I wonder how much it will cost. Electricity is expensive here in Japan and I just took it for granted that it's a waste of money to keep it on all day. Maybe after some actual calculations, it won't add up to much.
How much electricity will a Dual G4 1.25 with Apple speakers and Apple 20" LCD use in a 24 hour period? Assuming that it's in deep sleep mode, of course. I can't seem to find the info on Apples spec pages. Does anyone have this info?

the difference between off an deep sleep is a couple watts. i recall a 3 vs 5 figure.
in other words the power surge and churning of the hard drive on boot probably does more wear.
I know this is catering to the professional market, but shouldn't Apple be working on getting the prices down, rather than up?
What was the price tag for an equivalent rig before Apple rolled out their products?
I think you'll find that, from the point of view of the pros who'd buy it, Apple just dropped the price of the technology by an astonishing amount. And that's what matters to pros.
I really don't want to spend $1200 on a monitor, but I want a G5 and will need a monitor to go with it. The 17" would fit my needs well, but is it short sighted to buy a monitor with a discontinued connection? Also, do you think there will be deals on the older 20" displays ?

The combination of sleep during office hours and timed shutdown/startup really makes the power button a pretty rarely needed feature, right up there with the CD force-eject pinhole In fact it makes it a "feature" more than what it used to be - a necessity.
I've timed it such that my Mac turns on as I enter the room and is ready by the time I'm done eating my bagel.
Of course for workaholics and home/dorm use, timed shutdown is not a feature you'll want to bother with normally. My home iMac is on all the time although I sleep it after 10 minutes of inactivity.
The more I read about - and look at - these new displays, the more that 20" is calling my name.
Anyone know where any "real life" (WWDC floor?) shots of these things are? The Apple beauty shots are always so sterile and tough to get a true idea of the size, overall design/look, etc.
During the keynote, when the 20" and 23" rose up from the floor, they almost looked LITTLE. Losing all that plastic (what, 2"-plus?) around the screen itself really tightened these things up.
The 20", during the keynote, looked more like the 17" iMac screen.
I put my G5 to sleep using the button on my display. Tapping that button is far easier than mousing to the Sleep menu command, especially when my contact lenses aren't on.
Was just looking at the Elgato Systems website, pictured next to the their HDTV Eye500 model & G5 and a display similar display to the newly announced model.

^ if you look at the VR for the new display/G5, you'll notice a white box in the back of the g5.
is that the power transformer?

Thanks. So the required set-top box mentioned is not a tuner?

I think it is a breakout box for the various cables which would mean it is needed on all three new displays.

Seems to have a slide out support rather that the central stand. To my eye looks better design.
Might be a mockup image or product i haven't come across... or early prototype?

is that NVIDIA 6800 graphics card the only one that can power that type of setup?
