Interesting that a lot of you opted for the GeForce 4 Ti... I'm about to buy the dual 1 GHz tower myself. BTO with the GeForce 4 Ti and without the modem.
I recommend that nobody add memory at the Apple store... it's 2-3 times more expensive that way. Just get your Mac with the RAM it comes with by default and buy the rest somewhere else like Ramjet, Memory X or even a store like Fry's. It's standard PC2700 DDR memory after all, you should be able to get it just about anywhere.

I would not suggest opting out of that 56k modem. It is almost impossible to add it later, and it's only $50. bucks... You may need it when you sell it later.
Was very tempted to buy the Dual 867 with the superdrive though. (Probably should have done that but... ) when have you ever seen a Wells Fargo truck following the hearse?
I'm sort of glad I bought my Dual 1 GHz in January.
The DDR is dressing.

Sorry, but there's no amount of justification you could possibly put forth that could take away from the advantages of a 166 MHz bus compared to your 133 MHz bus. The Macs need as much bus speed as they can get, the 166 Mhz bus makes a big difference over the 133 MHz bus. Whether you need the extra drive bays or not or whatever... doesn't matter. The reason I'm getting a new dual 1 Ghz is because of the bus speed. The other stuff is nice too.

I really don't need it and won't ever use it. And I'm not planning on selling this Mac, either.
The DDR is dressing. The drive bays? 2 5.25" is nice, but 4 3.5" is unnecessary, and still possible with a QuickSilver. ATA/100? I can still add an ATA/133 PCI card to my system if I want it...
.....I'm sort of glad that my system wasn't the last stop-gap before we get some real bandwidth. Hopefully something magical will happen between now and 2004 (IBM's desktop POWER4 derivative with SIMD.) I'll probably buy another Power Mac three (possibly four) revisions from now.

Well I am thinking of the same thing
But if IBM powered machine comes next spring I surely will buy it....of course if the price is within my range
While the $1699 dual 867MHz is tempting, I really need a laptop, so I'm buying the $2499 TiBook. For $800 I get 38% the processing power, 66% the graphics power, 50% the hard disk space, a combo drive that's 50% slower, plus a nice wide screen LCD".
Bodhi. I don't really get it. You had the Dual GHz SlowSilver(tm) and you are jump to the machine that has CPU with the exact same speed?
Yes I know the bus is 34Mhz faster and has one more optical drive bay.
But after selling the SlowSilver(tm)....you will have to pay extra for the DDR-RAM etc etc. You end up will be paying like 600 bucks or something for a machine with only 10-15% improvement.
Doesn't really make any sense.
Anyone know any tricks to get my credit on track so I can get a new powermac. My credit was stolen a couple of years ago... bastards... I really want the dual 1gig with the radeon9000 if anyone knows of a way please let me know cuz then I'd get one within 5 minutes if finding out how. hehe
[quote]I'm going for BTO dual 867 with superdrive tomorrow
However, I can't decide on which graphics card to get...I am tempted to get the Radeon 9000, but have heard reports that it is slower than the 8500...
I'll probably just go for the GF4 MX and upgrade when the Ti comes down in price...
Either way I'm happy
Peace,
Marc

Marc, You may want to stick with the base graphics card and pick up a Radeon 8500 on which ATI has recently reduced the prices. Or, you could pick up a Radeon 9700 coming out soon but that's gonna cost some $$$. Anyway, that's what I'm doing on a new dual 1Gig. Enjoy your new PM.

A) Makes sense when I sold it for $3200!
Makes sense since I paid $2500 for it!
C) Makes sense considering what I am paying for THIS machine!
Honestly...I roll my investment over and over into new machines. I skipped a bump once and it bit my ass. It's fun, I have EXCELLENT contacts so I pay slightly below cost for the machines, it's not much money out of my pocket to upgrade so why not?

My law firm can sometimes help clean up credit based on "identity theft." Send me an email and I'll give you the details... [email protected]
I also ordered mine on Tuesday and it is still being reviewed. When I ordered it, it said 1-3 days til shipping. If you place the same order now, it says 2-3 WEEKS til shipping. Not a good sign.
Also looks like the default models still say 1-3 days and any BTO model will have a longer wait.
This is replacing a PowerMac 7100 (upgraded to a 260MHz G3), so this is a MAJOR upgrade for me.

Bodhi has the right idea I think. For instance I've been debating this very same move. Not only could I get some idiot on eBay to pay too much for my 1 GHz DP Quicksilver, but I can now get a big discount on Apple hardware from my college. I get a machine faster w/10.2 and 2 5.25 inch drive bays. I also like the Audio I/O so I can use my plain talk mic with the machine. However, I've greased this thing up, and it's much more sleek than the new towers are. Trade mince meat for swiss cheese?
