There is nothing wrong to be surrounded by women, if they are under 30

More seriously, while I was a resident in Medecine I have some problems with some chief nurses. Many of them loved to make people like me obey : as a futur doctor I always refused to make them happy.

One time the chief nurse of the emergency surgical room center, told me to change of dresses, just because I was outside in a clen environnement for a good five minutes (this is not steriles clothes, just clean ones). I said that it was stupid, but she told me to do so. I was angry and kicked the door, and change my dresses.

I re-enter with the new dresses in this aera, and she falled upon me saying that she was the chief nurse and that I had to obey to her. I replied that I was not recquiered to obey to her, and it bring her crazy. I stayed calm, and things stopped.

Three months laters, as my resident stage was finsih, and that I reported to my boss for an evaluation, we talked a little, and then he show me a letter. The chief nurse made this letter and complained about you, he said. What do you have to say ? : me. Well i just said that she was not my boss. He grined, and put directly the letter in the garbage.

There is nothing worse, than middle-aged ladies, who are not your superior, trying to have some powers on you, just because you are young.

Now this time is finish, and I don't have to face such situations (well almost ...)

Just today I had an attending tell me that because nurses are unionized and in short supply, the doctor who complains about nursing staff will soon find themselves unemployed.

Generally no. From observing other students at my hospital from a number of medical schools, it seems to be those students who act as if nurses have nothing to teach, who are at the receiving end of the most abuse. I must say though, that I am generally frustrated by all unionized personell at my hospital. They seem to act as if it is something earthshattering whenever they are asked to do something that falls into their job description. Hell... I don't bitch about the fact that I am paying close to $1000/week for the privilege of performing rectal exams and starting IVs at 3 in the morning!

Groverat, a good tale. Too bad you're living it.

I've worked with many women and men who were far older than myself, however they were all competent and smart so I didn't have any of the problems you have.

If you start a blog, I'll read it.

The intent of this judge-made law is good, but in the end it gives people with personal problems a weapon to use against sensibility and true egalitarianism.

Again, my point is that a personality should be fully accountable in the hiring procedure, even if it's for a mother who acts motherly. Right now, certain personality quirks have become "more equal" than others, to use that term. Anything touching gender or race bias, even if it's a totally honest abstraction from an affiliated culture, is untouchable. That, my friend, is not egalitarian at all.

You're right. I can't tell you how many male bosses I've had that rule with an iron fist and treat their employees with a contemptuous, cost-cutting sneer. There's a preferred personality quirk taken very near its logical extreme: the domineering male boss. They've gone on the record saying they don't care whether anyone likes them. They *may* acknowledge the fact that you're addressing them. They'll endlessly berate you for making an honest mistake, automatically take the customer's side in every dispute, or generally ignore you at best. But, they're good cost cutters! Clearly this kind of managerial misbehavior doesn't seem to matter compared to the mighty greenback!

Have you ever worked for a big business? It's not really as stodgy as you think. As far as I know, 99% of poor management takes place in the public sector and in the NFP/Education sectors.

Sometimes, cost-cutting is indeed necessary, and other times it is not. But again, this is not really the point of the discussion. Ultimately, all businesses are in the business of making money. That's just a fact of a market economy -- a system of which "survival of the fittest" is also a fact. Managers who don't improve the financial prospects do indeed get canned, and improving financial prospects is a process of many variables. So while not every one is perfect, there is a clear line between performance and lag, and employees of any kind that lag do tend to lose their jobs, unless there's some sort of artificial control (judge made laws) that prevents a certain, lagging employee to be fired.

Yes, the world is full of inequites, but there's no reason to try to balance them with more inequities. This is a bit off topic, but I think the entire system of civil litigation needs to be rethought to prevent precedential evidence from having so much legal pull.

Every Monday, spritz your office with a different scent. I suggest somehitng light like Jungle Gardenia.

Enjoy a new cuisine for lunch everyday that you heat up in the microwave. Haggis one day, sardines and onions the next.

Change your music daily. Nina Hagen singing in German one day, Yma Sumac singing Inca the next.

Finally, hang a sign on the door "Yeth, Marthia, the door ith locked"

If the company you work for does not have a procedure for reporting sexual harrassment or hasn't acted on an employees complaint, then it may be liable for any harrassment that continues to occur. It might not seem worthwhile to do anything about it, but that's the only way it will stop. Some info that might be of use to you or one of your colleagues can be downloaded in pdf format here:

I manage the computer networks for the department of human ecology within the college of natural sciences. My people take up 3 buildings (all of Gearing Hall and big chunks of Painter Hall and Seay). My office is in Gearing and I have work-study (students who receive financial aid based on on-campus work) people who help manage computer labs.

I only have one full-time employee and he works in the Seay building. For the purpose of this exercise let's call him Senator Assface. In the Seay building he is responsible for a grand total of 8 professors, 3 staff and a small computer lab of 6 computers.

For reference, I have ~32 professors and god knows how many staff (20+) in Gearing Hall alone, Painter adds 10 professors and accompanying staff. Technically we're not obligated to help staff (I pull this card out on Marthcia all the time) but we do it anyway because they can be whining maggots.

That being said... I actually have more time to help him with the problems in Seay than he does to help with Gearing or Painter. And this isn't a close contest, he literally does nothing in any building but Seay. It takes him hours to navigate the complexities of print-cartridge changing, and this is not an exaggeration. Thursday he spent the entire day installing a RAM upgrade into a network printer (he called at 8:30am for help and then again at 2:45pm).

Let's put it this way, I've been working for the department since January 2000, mostly in a work-study position as a student, some full time in the summers. I have only held my current position since October 2004. He, on the other hand, has worked for the University of 12 years. And I am his supervisor. And this is the government, where seniority rules. That is how astounding his incompetence is. We put him in Seay because his disturbing incompetence can be masked. 3 of the 8 professors know their computers very well. They need zero assistance 90% of the time. There is only one problem professor, and she's minor compared to the beasts we have locked away in Painter and Gearing (especially Painter, there is one there who is such a hagmonster they actually had to get all the faculty to go on a retreat in Colorado to try and get them to not want to slaughter her with plastic sporks).

    Moving on...

University faculty get new computers every 4 years or so through some technology program. We got 12 in this week for various profs. 2 for Painter, 7 for Gearing, 3 for Seay. You can see where this is going.

The elevator in Gearing, built in 1932, is broken so it has been my distinct pleasure to carry computers up and down 3 flights of stairs. I send Senator Assface an e-mail telling him that he has 3 computers waiting for him to take to Seay. He wants one of my work-studies to help him. These are tiny-ass Dell cases with flat-panel monitors. He wants help. I'm carrying these goddam things up 3 flights of stairs by my damned self without complaint. My dead grandmother could move these computers around and he needs help to put them on a dolly, put them in his car and wheel them up to his nice new building (Seay was finished in 2002) with functional, air-conditioned elevators.

    Dell 1905FP monitor - 15lbs

    Dell Optiplex SX280 - 11lbs

OH NOES I NEEDS TEH HELP GROVERAT! 26 POUNDS IS LIKE THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD WON'T YOU HELP ME PLEASE!? IF YOU DO NOT I FEAR I WILL CRUMBLE UNDER THE CRUSHING WEIGHT THEN WHAT WILL BECOME OF SENATOR ASSFACE JUNIOR AND MRS. ASSFACE?! WOE!!

Well the male work-study* who comes in on M/W/F helped me shuttle the computers from Hogg to Gearing so I could set them up, so there's no way in hell I'm having him move computers while Senator Assface watches him and makes those irritating "oh" noises people make when you are doing their damned job for them and they feel guilty and want to express some kind of concern. I guess male work-study #2 who comes in T/Th gets to help Senator Assface tomorrow.

As I typed this post he has called twice to (1) get help filling out his time sheet and (2) see if he can get more vacation hours (he is the king of vacation/sick hours).

    * - I love women, but female work-studies are absolutely worthless. They don't know shit about computers, don't even want to try to learn and can't pick up anything heavier than a package of paper. But since this department is 99.999% female I have no other choice.
