Some of your requests are what drive the prices up to begin with. 1GB RAM standard? Your better off buying ram elsewhere for a lesser price as to not get charged the premium. Again bigger HD could be possible through BTO options, but again. This is soooo much cheaper to get on your own. BTO again with video cards, Obviously the low end needs to be a lot better, but third party 3D cards is what they need a few more of. BTO on standard cards should be fine because they'll never get every card available until the market share rises more than a few percentage points.
If they do create over all faster, better, more attractive machines that actually have better options available to them they will increase in market share greatly over the next few years.
I agree that maybe the lower end PowerMacs it might not happen because would drive the prices up. But the top of the line, I don't think what i am asking is too much. A video card that could drive the 30" displays should be standard as well as 1gig of RAM and 250HD.
You pay top price for the dual 2.5ghz so it should offer a more attractive package. Off course anything you want aditional you buy outside Apple for much cheaper.
Apple should buy Luxolgy, they have great support for Mac OS X and modo looks really nice. Most of the engineers use to work for lightwave so there is huge potential for this company and there future products.
Also curiously they are doing an Apple store tour next month...
I've been beating this drum for a long time. I mean Apple and Luxology have been tight before anyone outside of the 3D industry knew who Luxology was. I remember when Brad Peebler came out on stage at the conference to talk about the G5 and everyone was like "who's Luxology?"
I think Apple is beginning to realize that in some cases it doesn't matter that they have to support a PC version if they can make a hot product.
I don't think anyone here has seen the Modo UI but it is some very good stuff. Plus you have Brad, Allan and Stuart running point. Easiest way to get into 3D without pissing off Alias, Maxon and others.
1. Powermac G6. Twin dual-core PPC 980mp (based on the Power 5, w/SMT and other goodness). New tower enclosure with room for 4 HDs and two optical drives. Twin 2.2 GHz, $1499; Twin 2.6 GHz, $1899; Twin 3.0 GHz, $2299.
2. Powermac G6 X. Twin dual-core PPC 980mp at 3.4 GHz. Unique tower with 4 hot-swapable drives, two optical drives, 8 peripheral slots, and up to 32 GB RAM. Peltier-cooled for optimal performance. Tower is in the shape of a giant black-anodized aluminium cube reminiscent of the NeXT cube, but more Borg-like. $3999.
3. iMac G6. New iMacs with single PPC 980mp CPUs. High end model has an HD display, lower two models are 17" and 20" cinema. 17" 2.2 GHz, $1199; 20" 2.2 GHz, $1499; 23" 2.2 GHz, $1899
4. Mini G5. Single PPC 970fx, an extra RAM slot, and a real desktop HD. The RAM is user-upgradable. 1.8 GHz, $599; 2.2 GHz, $799.
5. Mini G6. Single PPC 980mp. Two RAM slots, one HD, one optical drive, and an agp slot for upgradable, standard video cards. 2.0 GHz, $1099; 2.4 GHz, $1399.
6. iBook G5. IBM's secret PPC 970 xg consumes less than the G4 at high speeds! 12" 1.6 GHz, $899; 14" 1.8 GHz, $1099, 14" 2.0 GHz, $1299.
7. Powerbook G6. Single dual-core PPC 980 mpx runs near desktop speeds at low power. IBM roolz! Apple adds a groovey 10" laptop to the lineup, and the high end goes HD. 10" 1.8 GHz, $1299; 15" 2.0 GHz, $1499-$1799; 17" 2.2 GHz, $1899-$2199; 20" HD 2.2 GHz, $2499
8. iPod Media. 8" color display. Ports for direct connection of digital cameras (still and video). 120 GB. Ports for connection to HDTV for displaying photos and videos. Rugged aluminium construction with rubberized edges for heavy handling. $499.
media centre/PVR (aka what the mac mini should/could have been)
massive hard drive, optical sound out.
tablet remote control for the above. palm of your hand size with stylus for touch screen control -- uses inkwell. connects via airport (not bluetooth). a thin client to the media centre. control your media centre from anywhere within range.
VoIP phone. handset sits in a base station which is airport enabled. syncs with selected address book on nearby mac to grab all phone numbers. caller id (with photo!). select your ring tone from itunes. skype compatiable.

If they do create over all faster, better, more attractive machines that actually have better options available to them they will increase in market share greatly over the next few years.
But.... Apple charges a premium for BTO items because they are at the point of sale. And many people would blindly upgrade through Apple because when they open the box it's all there: they don't have to send if off to a third party after recieving their new shiny toy before they can play with it. So why wouldn't Apple charge a premium for those add ons (They are not doing anything different from anyone else).
If Apple includded those items, such as, more ram, bigger hard drive and better video card, as standard, you would not be paying a BTO price. It is the same with car parts. If you built a car from car parts rather than buying one off the floor it would cost you a squillion bucks more.
Apple has way better buying power than you or I, so when they buy ram or drives or cards you can be sure it is for a fraction that we pay for it.
I agree that the ram drives and video cards should be better than what they are, given that Apple portrays itself as having premium hardware. I think it would tip a few more over the line to improve the specifications at marginal cost.
No matter where Apple buys their stuff from it's going to cost you more to get a Mac with 1GB of RAM standard than it is to get one with 256MB standard.
This keeps costs as low as as possible for Apple to give it to the consumer as cheap as possible.
Don't forget they don't have the bulk buying power over a lifetime history at under 3% market-share that other vendors do.
No matter what it's going to be cheaper to do it your self. Apple knows this. THey can also make a buck from BTO. It's in everybody's best interest.

I essetially agree with what you are saying except with Apple's purchacing power.
Are you saying that a 3rd party vendor can, essenially, sell it(say ram) for less than the cost to Apple to incorporate it into their hardware?
I just think Apple puts the biggest margin on all products it thinks the market can manage. With smaller items such as ram the margin as a % is considerably higher. But when those elements are all combined into, say, a computer then a smaller margin is applied.
I'm a designer not a sales guru so I could be speaking the proverbial!
4. Mini G6. Single PPC 980mp. Two RAM slots, one HD, one optical drive, and an agp slot for upgradable, standard video cards. 2.0 GHz, $1099; 2.4 GHz, $1399.
I like your wish list with one small addition:
4a. Mini G5. Single PPC 970GX. Two RAM slots, one HD, one optical drive, and an agp slot for upgradable, standard video cards. 2.0 GHz, $799; 2.4 GHz, $999.
I like the iHome concept, a WiFi phone (see iHome concept) would be nice but probably alienate mobile companies needed for iTunes licenses...so I dobt it will happen.
I think it was Fun project for steve to have Apple made Audio for his trip between Pixar & Apple.
Also. It could be a test system for Market research.
Let's see this way.
Steve: We will make this great product i**** v2. But it will be little more expensive than what you marketing guy think ! I don't want to see cube situation again !
Marketing Man 1: Well. I have a idea !.
Steve: say so !
Marketing Man 1: Why don't we test the market first ?
Steve: How ?
Marketing Man 1:Since we need this and this component to build this thing, we need to buy great number of the part to reduce the overall cost.
Steve: And ?
Marketing Man 1:Let's make MP3 player with this part and put a high price on it to test the Market. If many people buy it with certain price than we can check the price structure and also we can reduce the overall manufacturing cost since More people buy MP3 than Mac!
Steve:If you did not come up with good idea, I should FIRE you. But I like your idea. Since my walkman is so outdated , I need my own MP3 with Apple logo on it. Shall we call it iMusic?
Marketing Man 2: No since we can transform it to i**** v2, we need not to contain it as Music Device. We need another name!
Steve: One more shouting, you might be fired!.
Well we need Unisex name which Nobody can guess what it does contain, I think I can call it "iPod". What you guys are think?
Marketing Man 1 &2: It is wonderful name! ( I don't want to be fired ! )
Steve: Than do it !

I think this is the story.

I'm not sure how often I could wear it though. My watches always get beat down working. That's why I always buy a really durable $30.00 watch.
iMac G6 HD with a 23 inch screen. Oh yes, please. I guess something like that will surface at some point, but I'm not holding my breath.
And the concept was made and progressed for more than few years.
Problem was that technology and market was not ready for the change
and i think this year is the year that it can happen.
