just wondering, since most people are excited about powermac updates, there doesnt seem to be any talk about ibooks.

i really want to get one, and i have someone lined up to buy my current laptop, but i'm so anxious and dont want to wait.

should i still wait or just buy the current ibook (12" w/combo - $999).

Give it a few more weeks - general consensus is that they will get a slight speed bump, or at the very least, 512Mb RAM. That's my opinion anyway.

really, ram or hard drive upgrades dont interest me much, but something like a cpu or gpu upgrade does, those arent things i can replace.

hopefully there is some news soon, i dont want to lose my buyer for my current laptop.

I reckon you'll know either way by this time next week. At the moment, Apple is still selling iBooks with Panther, so they have to start shipping them with Tiger at some point, and that would be a good time to update them. Maybe if by next Wednesday there is still no sign of an upgrade, you should buy. Either way, don't buy until they start shipping with Tiger.

iBooks have been updated in April and October, over and over. I hope the recent rumor of wide screen models turns out to be true, or else I'd hope to see a 14" as is with a higher resolution screen. 1024x768 is so 2001.

I'd expect a fully CoreImage compatible video card (Radeon 9600 would be nice, but? doubtful to say the least. Maybe the card in the 12" Powerbook though), and probably a 1.5 GHz CPU on the high end.

As for widescreen it would be nice, but I wouldn't count on it.

    Same with the resolution upgrade.

Unless of course they decide that it's finally time for a new case in which case (heh) widescreen and better resolutions would be likely.

You're probably right; it would take a new design for there to be any kind of new displays. It is about time for a new iBook. Apple might milk the current iBook design for another year since it's been such a good seller. It would take a really great design to beat the current models.

A speed bump and new GPU won't convince me to trade up from my 12" G3. I want something a little different. Here's to hoping.

I was expecting most of the Apple lineup to be upgraded to 512 MB of RAM before or shortly after the release of Tiger, but seeing as how the single 1.8 GHz G5 PowerMac still only has 256 MB of RAM after todays upgrades to the PowerMac line I don't know what to think. I'm also in the market for an iBook but I think I can wait till fall to see if the rumors of 14" and/or 15" widescreen iBook come to fruition. I'm also hoping that the iBook CPU might be double the 800 MHz I'm currently using but that might be pushing it unless the PowerBooks get a serious upgrade before then. Here's Hoping!

My school just ordered three 14" iBooks. They required factory add ons like extra Ram and iWorks preinstalled. They were due to ship on 4/27 but we just got an email delaying the ship date to May 6th. We received confirmation of the order originally on April 20th...so they had a week already to install some ram and ship 'em out, but they haven't. Makes me think that they don't have any 'books left to do custom assembly with. Maybe the update is working its way through the channel and May 6th is when an updated version will be ready for delivery. I can't imagine why they would have a 10 day delay in shipping a basic 14" ibook unless they were out of stock on the current models.

    That just couldn't be. May 6 isn't a Tuesday!

Oh, er, today was a Wednesday and Apple announced new Power Macs. So much for Tuesdays.

Note that I said May 6th for DELIVERY...the mythical Tuesday, May 3rd could be when the iBook is RELEASED. I would never, ever assume that an Apple product could ever potentially or even possibly be released on any such day excepting Tuesday. Sunday shall be the countdown thus started, followed immediately by Monday, but nor should the countdown end on Monday, nay the releasse date must occur on Tuesday. Wednesday is totally unnacceptable...And THURSDAY IS RIGHT OUT! Tuesday is the day of the releasing....and the day of the releasing shall be Tuesday.

Ship time for stock iBooks at the online Apple Store is now back to same business day, with 10.3 Panther. Surely within a week or so they will ship with Tiger pre-installed even if there is no other upgrade.

Why don't you consider a refurb? You could save some money, and if you want to update it later, you shouldn't have a lot of depreciation... ibooks are in huge demand.

I posted this in another thread,

The last 6 releases (that I can recall) have NOT been on a tuesday.

Powermacs (rev a, rev b, rev c) all have been on a monday or wednesday.

    LCD's... monday.

    iMac g5... monday.

    Powerbooks... wendesday.

It seems to me that apple releases on any day BUT tuesday any more.

Interesting side note relative to iBooks - Today, May 1st, is the 4th anniversary of the current form factor.

The white dual-USB iBook was introduced on May 1, 2001 at an Apple special event.

Just registered here last week for the exact purpose of the new iBook. I dropped my 3 year old HP and shattered the screen. Part of me was very upset by this, but another part of me just screamed that this was the perfect oppurtunity to finally dive headfirst into OS X, something I've heard a lot of good things about over the past couple of years. I'd only had the HP for about 8 months anyways, and I'd had it into the shop about 5 times for various problems. Ick.

Anyways, with the new iBooks on the verge (hopefully) of coming out, I'm biding my time. However, I'm growing impatient, and I wish they'd hurry up!

Anyway, just thought I'd introduce myself. I'll probably be back here asking for help exploring my brand new iBook within the next few weeks.

Welcome to the boards. I think an iBook will be a good first Mac, for just about anyone.
