Don't know about Nvidia Quadro cards/drivers. Isn't Apple developing drivers for Nvidia GPUs?

All BTO graphics card options on Apple's website are the graphics cards that Apple's I/O Kit Team develops, in-house.

The X800 XT that ATI sells for the PowerMac is developed by ATI. It explains a lot when it comes to being an unoptimized graphics card for OS X.

Assuming Apple's I/O Team is awaiting on OpenGL 2.0 natively within Quartz and at the device driver level I would expect Apple to develop the X800 XT driver moving forward and other ATI drivers, as well as nVidia drivers for their systems.

in the mean time i'm overclocking my ATI Mobility Radeon 9200... goddamnit humans are dumb

i had some major artifacting, panicked, let the iBook rest for a while, now i'm back to overclocking my GPU

hmurchinson -- yup, bad habit from my PC days -- tinkering and tweaking till somethin' explodes and then go running to one's parents/ partner/ for consolation....

720p high def h.264 plays slightly better on my now overclocked ati mobility radeon 9200

    ....BACK on topic...

the new iMac g5 updates seem to butt up a bit too closely to the PowerMac g5... i'm gonna place a firm bet (well, no real cash involved) on WWDC 2005 will see next-gen G5 announced, for XServe and PowerMac G5 to start shipping in July...

the current PowerMac g5 range is basically for those you need an update and better power, and to finish off the manufacturing run of the curent 970FX(? is that right?) chip/ agreement with IBM, etc... PowerBook update ???? now i'm getting carried away, perhaps....

well, that's my guess. Apple is back in the game on the consumer side with iMac g5s and hopefully soon iBooks.

I've never seen a Powermac update refresh earlier than 3 months. I gues they could augment the current line with "Quad" models.

    Quadra 2Ghz $2499

    Quadra 2.3Ghz $2999

    Quadra 2.7Ghz $3499

But no matter what Apple does if they don't ride out the current sales they will piss off the people that recently purchased the newest Powermacs.

I agree, but regarding the dual-dual PMs, Paris 2006 is more likely. I don't think we'll see them at MWSF 2006 or WWDC 2006, and there's little or no chance of seeing them in 2005 at all.

Steve is keynoting WWDC 05. What will he talk about? Tiger, no hardware.

Sorry, I don't agree. If you look at the past 2 to 3 years Apple have a history of announcing professional hardware at WWDC. Powermac G5, Powerbook Titanium, Displays, etc.

My feeling is that we'll see powerbook G5 and possibly something else(even some sort of new software). I agree with a previous post about a new dual core powermac very unlikely. Apple don't want to make people mad after just upgrade the powermac G5.

I wouldn't be mad. I haven't put my Alienware order in yet. I'm waiting on a technical reply from them. If Apple can beat them to the punch with a better machine I'll take it.

I wouldn't be mad either, but people who just purchased the new upgrades for sure they will not like it. I would love to see a powerful professional machine coming at WWDC, but for some reason the fact they just upgrade the Powermac makes me feel it's not going to happen. unfortunately.

remember that there is a very very easy way to make people not be mad about their just purchase powerMacs

    1. announce new machines top-specs, shipping in august, and a price premimum that keeps them still happy with their current powerMacs

    2. this 'announcement' for stuff shipping in august is to show that apple clearly wants to play in the high-end market - their POWER range of stuff

    3. announce it as XServe dual core for example for clustering, etc. not PowerMac... easy. PowerMac people won't be pissed 'coz they'll be like, well, it's an xserve, not a powermac

    4. announce PowerBook g5. those who bought new powerbooks since Jan/Feb won't be mad because powerbook g5 shipping in august is the usual 6 month update.

    easy peasy. everybody wins.

If we see dual cores at WWDC '06, it certainly won't be in a PowerMac. Maybe in an Xserve, or the fabled super workstation Mac.

i'm with those in the How f8cking cool would it be for the Quadra name to come back? yeah! here's hoping

Following from my above post, given Apples strong push into video and also distributed computing applications, I think WWDC just might feature some "next gen g5" in Xserve as most likely... for "render" nodes eg. even dvd studio pro now offers distributed encoding... and clustered computing eg. virginia tech, australia dsto, etc... etc... the cluster kids that put apple in the news...

So if the Powermacs went dual processor dual core, would they make the iMac single processor dual core? Or would they leave iMac as it is, make the dual dual powermac the super workstation and have a single dual powermac as a kind of Powermac mini?

The iMac will eventually have a dual core processor because that is an obviously eventuality. Nobody will be making single core processors anymore in the future. Not for computing anyway. Probably not for refrigerators either. But you wont see an iMac update at WWDC if Apple were to keep the powerMac line , and add a more powerful Dual Processor, Dual cored ProMac line, or something of that nature. I just don't see Apple doing any of this now though. I have a hard time believing that they would keep 4 versions of the PowerMac if they were to Make a Dual Processor Multiple Corgasm ProMac.

I think there will be an announcement of a dual-core Apple computer at WWDC. I say "Apple computer" instead of "Mac" because I think they'll be making a serious workstation for places like Weta Digital and Industrial Light & Magic with insanely fast processors and an SLI solution.

Well, but they might still *sell* single core processors, as in failed chips where the defective core is jumpered out. Remember the 487 chip?

yay! someone agrees with my render node marketing theory

umm.. don't tell me your talking SLI like in nvidia-gpu-SLI...??
