I bought a ps2 back before DVD players dropped down to practically nothing. I had it for a weekend and had to return it because I started to see my kids as annoying distractions to my game play.
I think I will definately buy the PS3 while it's competitive with new Blu-ray players and now at least one of my kids is old enough to play along.
All in all, this thing just kicks ass! I can't even contemplate what PS4 will be.
I'm sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo with the PS3. I'd sell my firstborn to get one right now. Well not really by a long shot but I can't wait.
I just hope Sony doesn't screw up the software. The Xbox 360 might not have the brute industrial strength of the PS3 but you know it'll have a better UI than Sony. Unless Sony kidnapped some Apple engineers. Although I might have to temper that though since Apple has grown quite schizo regarding their UI.
Yeah, I don't know how they're planning to keep that price competitive. It seems like all the hardware is worth at the very least $1000 (retail, anyway.) But in order to to compete, there's absolutely no way it can be more than $500.
I have a feeling that Microsoft is going to underprice it again, at 400, maybe even 350 at opening.
Nothing is confirmed about microsoft's price(at least nothing I've seen), people just expect $299. People were expecting(hoping) for $299 on the PS3 as well. The price point is an interesting bit, because really, for all the power that they are packing into them, and for everything they can do, they are damn cheap. But they are still game consoles, and people don't expect or want to pay more than $300 for a game console, and even that is stretching it a bit. Yes, millions will still flock to the PS3, but you can almost feel the pang of discontent racing through many of their stomachs as they slide their credit card.
Likewise, while the high selling prices might not be a big issue in terms of overall sales. It will alienate some potential buyers. Kids mostly, with no income and whose parents buy them things. The mom or dad who *knows nothing about game consoles* Is less likely to buy their kid a $450 PS3 when they see a $249 or $199 Revolution sitting right next to it.
\
But, I do think revolution is going to do pretty well(better than people are predicting), if they intro it at $199 or $249 and if they hype up the massive backwards compatibility it has.
I will likely end up with a PS3 and a revolution in the long run.
Yea, I'm sure the DVD player aspect of the PS2 really helped sales initially for those little kids with no income. "but mom! then we don't need to buy a DVD player(optional:for my room)"
The blu-ray is likely to have a similar effect, except, I think families with big HDTVs aren't going to mind dropping that cash anyway.
Sony will have a huge problem with other electronics manufacturers who are going to try to sell blu-ray players for $600-$1000 each since they have to make a profit on the hardware while Sony can sell the PS3 at a loss knowing they will make money back on the games over its lifespan.
The very fact that Sony will undercut all their conrads in the blu-ray pac will surely cause problems and force delays in getting those companies who support either HD-DVD and Blu-ray to resolve all their issues before the PS3 launches in Japan in June of 2006.
people bough ipods for 500 at one point. I think the PS3 is a much better deal.
Alot of people thought $500 was a bargin for a large-capacity mp3 player since they needed a portable place to put the $1000's of dollars worth of music they stole off p2p networks.
$500 for an ipod to store all you music you collected (legally and illegally) over the decades is not a bad investment but to spend $500 a game system then another $30-$40 for an extra wireless controller plus $59.00 a game and you need at least 2 or 3 games to really see what you new next-gen console can do is a different story. Sure you can play you old games on the new system but they will look like crap when compared directly to the new stuff and people spent $500 for something new and exciting and not to replay old games.
Since it appears there will be little-to-no graphic differences between all new 3 consoles I think the one who gets the best games our first and can get to the $199 price port the fastest will win this war.
Different devices, different markets. Sony will be the first really high profile brand to bring in a high sticker to the game console market.
From the 70's forward, the console market is littered with technologically superior offerings that ran last or failed out right due to higher cost.
500 USD is way too high for a console. The other features are going to have to be extremely compelling. Look at Canada. It would cost 649 plus tax. Not too many kids are going to put down 800 Canadian for a games system plus one game or controller. NOT gonna happen. Not too many parents are going to shell out that cash either. Not with an Xbox360 selling for half, and a Ninitendo possibly selling for a third of that!
Add format uncertainty, and we might be waiting a while for Blueray. Sony can win the BR/DVD-HD war overnight if they price the PS3 right. But that means no more than 399 outside of Japan, and only in year one, has to drop fast afetr that. In Japan, it's a different game -- those consumers will probably pay to play -- Sony is nearly a religion in Japan.
I'm liking the Nintendo too. Most fun, best first party. Nintendo seems to be closer to understanding games as fun activities rather than games as voyeurism through technology...
The only "for sure" game system on my list is the Revolution, but you bet your ass I'm not averse to owning any or all of the Big Three.
But Sony has got to show me something more than GTA or GT. That will not cut it for me. I want fun, not "damn it feels good to be a gangsta."
How about Killzone; that game is gonna be the shit. MGS4, there isn't much info on that, but there's no such thing as a bad MGS game. UT2007 will be there. id has hinted that they will make Quake4 on the PS3 (well, likely both consoles.) There's gonna be a ton of games for the PS3.
I never got into Metroid Prime, even. I diligently played Halo 2 with a friend who can never find anyone to play with him in co-op last weekend and it was like pulling teeth.

I'm shure it will the first month or so to cash in on the hype, then it'll go to $399US and $349US pretty quick.

If the parents own HDTV and want to take advantage of HD movies as well then it might be easier to swallow $500. We'll see.
