Um, Aegis, time to crawl back into that Euro hole you crawled out of.
It sounds like someone has issues. I mean seriously, is the fact that mobile phone networks in the US are behind Europe and Japan a reason to get angry? Just live with it, the US has done a lot of catching up, and I'm sure they'll get there.
All you're doing with your rant is reenforcing the image that "American's are dumb". Traitor.
If this isn't a formfactor redesign, Apple might still find themselves putting 512MB on the logic board for the new iBook. IIRC the PowerBook 12" logic board is the same with a couple of extra ports soldered on (any way to mod the iBook to add these back on? hehe). So the PowerBook 12" might also get a minor update on the same day as the iBook 12" (although more likely they'll just use up surplus 12" iBook256 motherboards in them) to include whatever the iBook 12" has (512MB on board + 9600 for example).
If it is a new formfactor design (i.e., new motherboard) then maybe Apple have worked out a way to put, shock horror, TWO SODIMM slots on the machine.
The only thing that worries me is the possibility that Apple will release a 12" 4:3 notebook (1024x768) and a 14.1" 16:10 notebook (1280x800). What to get? I like the smaller laptop's form factor, but I also like widescreen (especially with an Elgato Digital Terrestrial receiver and for DVDs). I think I might have to go for the 14" in this case ... argh!
Um, Aegis, time to crawl back into that Euro hole you crawled out of. You proclaim that most Nokias and Sony Ericsssons have mobile capabilities beyond what is available in the US?
Let's see, take the Treo 650, any PocketPC enabled phone, or a Blackberry device and have certainly much more than any Nokia Brick or a Sony dialpad could provide.
Again, with the Treo you can open up word / excel / adobe email attachments, edit them fully, then send them off. Which Sony can do that with again?
Thanks for playing, good-bye...
My housemate had a Sony-Ericsson P800 two years ago which could do all of that. She's from Slovenia which isn't your average Western European country either. When was the Treo 650 released again? The P910 was released a year ago even, so I wonder what they will release this year! The only thing the Treo has going for it is the 320x320 64k display compared to the 208x320 256k display of the P910, then again it's meant to be a phone.
When I worked at BT we had R380s which were bloody neat things, monochrome display yes, but that was in 2000. Early version of SymbianOS IIRC, or a last gasp version of EPOC at worst.
No computer manufacuer ever ships with enough memory to truly run things effectivly. Why???
Becuase for the $80=$100AUD that RAM costs, they can save money and undercut or at least be competitve with other manufacturers. Most consumers wouldnt know what PC3200 was if it came up and punched them in the nose. Dont even try and explain the difference between Pc-133, PC3200 and that little flash stick in their digital cameras.
In short, in order to remain competitive, companies chose to eliminate costs in the area that the least people know about. The bloody RAM. Anyone that deserves the speed boost yu get from another stick, will go out and buy it themselves with the saved money.
Just my $0.02AUD.
EDIT: JUst on the whole PDA/smarthphone's versus high end phones thing: The smartphone has a touch screen. Anything with a touchscreen, PDA functions and multimedia stuff is a smartphone. So all these things that ppl are calling up against the Treo 650, are really the same thing with a different OS and form factor. They are the same category, not different.
And it is true that baby rabbits are sooooooooooooooooooo soft.
The US is a big country. We lag because of the sheer size of the coverage.
That and shitty telco laws.
A small(er) country with brand new infrastructure can leap over the POTS and go headlong into 3g.
my .02
Valid for many African and Asian countries, but Europe is a big 'country' made up of lots of 'states' with naff telco regulation and existing infrastructure as well.
The US will be behind in telecom until they find a way to ditch the monopolist lock-in mindset. Locked cellphones, phooey. The whole thing came from the stupid, stupid deal for 'universal service' that gave rise to the 'natural monopoly' concept, which was a deal with the devil. I think Europeans still pay more per mile-minute, but their technology and business arrangements are unquestionably superior. I have a Treo and it's nice, but the niceness comes from the Palm-part, not the phone-part.
(ahem) Now that ThinkSecret has released the fact that there are two iBooks and three Minis, shall we speculate as to what they are?
My guesses:
iBook: 12" 1.33GHz, 14" 1.5GHz, 7447's, same aspect ratio as present, same resolution. Superdrive becomes BTO. If there is an aspect ratio change, it will be 14" going to widescreen, WXGA, not WUXGA. If they are 7448's I will be very tempted by that cool-running, widescreen, big hard drive 14"...
Mini: 7448's at 1.33GHz, 1.5GHz, 1.67GHz. RAM slot moved to back, 3.5" HD. Biggest improvement is change to desktop hard drive. Same plastics will be used for Intel version.
Additional sources have confirmed that the Mac mini will be updated early next week alongside the iBook. The new high-end Mac mini configuration, for $699, is said to feature AirPort Extreme, BlueTooth, and SuperDrive standard. The mid-range model is expected to come standard with AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth, but it's unclear if the low-end model will too.
And if you consider that the SuperDrive option is $100, the AirPort/BlueTooth option is $99, it's is reasonable to think that the 3 configurations may only be for accessories, the techs specs maybe the same, for example:
7447 CPU @ 1.5GHz, 167MHz FSB, 512MB RAM, HD60@5400, ATI9600/64MB
with ComboDrive: $499
with ComboDrive and Aiport/BlueTooth: $599
with SuperDrive and Aiport/BlueTooth: $699
For the iBooks:
13.3" widescreen, new form factor (an hybrid between the PB 12" and the iBook 14"), 7447CPU@1.42/1.5GHz, 167MHz FSB, 512MB RAM, HD@5400, ATImobility9600/64MB.
iBook: 12" 1.33GHz, 14" 1.5GHz, 7447's, same aspect ratio as present, same resolution. Superdrive becomes BTO. If there is an aspect ratio change, it will be 14" going to widescreen, WXGA, not WUXGA. If they are 7448's I will be very tempted by that cool-running, widescreen, big hard drive 14"...

I roughly agree with the iBook speculation, but how will they fit a 1" high 3.5" hard drive into a Mac Mini, along with the 3/4" superdrive, another 3/4" for PCB and spacing, and 1/2" for casing, structure, etc? I make that 3", not 2"!
Now maybe Apple has sourced half-lowprofile-height 3.5" hard drives, i.e. 0.5" high. Maybe with a 0.5" superdrive and some squeezing and grinding they could do it.
If new mac mini's come out and are a tad better than the current range (better graphics) then I'll get the top CPU modle and add a better HD myself (unless they also start using the 7800 Hitachis).
If new mac mini's come out and are a tad better than the current range (better graphics) then I'll get the top CPU modle and add a better HD myself (unless they also start using the 7800 Hitachis).
I hope they also drop LCD prices.
Dobby.
I'll second that. The mini is nearly ideal for me and a bump in specs (especially graphics) would eliminate any excuses I have left...

Any smartphone dating back to the P800. Prototyped in 2001. The R380, of which I had a unit in 1999, could edit Word attachments from email.
Oh, remind me: why can't I use my 3G phone in America when it works in Poland or France?
Which US networks offer video calling?
"Euro hole."
Honestly, save the total inability to hear *anything negative* about America even if true for PO.
You lose, thanks for playing!

Not much bigger, about an inch. That's not a big 'sacrifice' for quite a bit performance gain + cheaper price.
