That is bad news, indeed. Here go my hopes for a better PowerBook by the end of the month...

Obviously something is very wrong. They pulled out of the Mac mini deal at the last minute. They pulled out of the keynote at the last minute. Why are they having a Q&A session at the expo? The only question I can see being asked is what the hell is going on?

Sorry for the confusing phrasing. "We" is me and some others here and elsewhere that expected a new 7448 Powerbook this month, probably at the Apple Expo keynote.

An MPC7448 based Powerbook would easily warrant a keynote presentation. This is not a simple speed-bump like the ones we are used to see in the G4 front. Granted, it is not a G5 but the 7448 processor has many nice improvements and would provide a solid update if Freescale was able to supply it at 1.8-2.0 GHz. Lower power, improved FSB, higher clock speed, more L2 cache and I remember having read somewhere that it has OOOE for Altivec instructions (sorry, no link at this moment).

EDIT: doh, it is in the fact sheet above.

With two years left before the Intel transition is complete, I'd say there's still plenty of time for more "great PowerPC products."

BTW, "great PPC products" can mean any Mac product Apple is currently selling.

Chances are, Apple won't be making such a big deal out of PPC upgrades since they're now focused on Intel. Quiet releases, rather than keynotes, is where we'll probably see them.

well, the situation is bad at Apple.

It seems that this week's announcement is going to be Ipod relate. Now if a canceled keynote in Paris means we might not see anything happening there! I want to cry!

In other words, Maybe not Apple PowerBook or PowerMac until MWSF.

unless Mr. Jobs creates an special event to announce it. It seems that for long time the current line up will be there. Very sad indeed.

PowerBook and PowerMacs need desperately an upgrade. Even with PPC. We all know it will change when Intel comes onboard. but it's too long of a wait.

So, is Steve really lying about amazing PPC products down the pipeline?

these moves coupled with having to face investors in October with this quarters results, means that, like i said, steve+gang is taking the safest route, and if this means cancelling mac mini deal and cancelling keynote, well, weird, something IS up. september 7 is probably just iTunesMoto and that's it. lets face it. a crappy looking ROKR you can buy tunes online for your phone, that's it. BIG FUCKING DEAL. FUCK.

man if IBM and/or Freescale was the cause of this latest foofarah... i'm gonna be hella pissed. there's a Freescale office down the road from me (seriously... it's where the 3rd world kids with the little hands make all your g4s) ... i'll..... do something.... and post it back here... GRRR bloody freescale and IBM

see all the stuff you have time to do when you don't have a girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse/etc

no....!!!!! nah, macintel is on track, for macworld sf2006. we have passed the point of no return, and even at this stage of the game IBM and Freescale have, surprise, failed to deliver... steve is so pissed he's not even going to bother going up on stage to talk about these "great powerpc products" ~ they are great, they're just late. hey! new slogan

    G4 & G5 PowerPC in Macs.

They're always Great. Just a tad Late.

That's right. if Apple nothing is for sure.

I wouldn't be surprise if we don't see mactel at MWSF.

Steve had to swallow his words before. so that could happen again easily.

Apple anticipates having Intel Macs on the market by the time WWDC rolls around next June. When have they ever been early with anything? My guess is that we'll see one line, perhaps the PowerBooks, with Intel processors around late May.

I'd be surprised to see a MacIntel at MWSF'06. However, I also think we've seen the last new PPC products. My guess is that the 7448s didn't show up. I doubt IBM will produce the 970MP at all. Do they need it for their blade servers? It looks to me like IBM is moving to the Opteron for their own products.

Someday we'll hear the true story behind the Intel transition, and it will have several surprises in it.

OK, so it looks as though the Paris Expo Keynote has been cancelled. We don't know if there was ever one scheduled in the first place. Clearly updates are needed most in the XServe and PowerBook line. Despite the fact that some of you say that Apple will wait for Intel, I cannot fathom them allowing some of their products to linger for a year or more without some sort of update.

    Apple's Product Line Updates

    (Oldest to Most Recent)

    Xserve - January 4, 2005

    PowerBook - January 31, 2005

    Power Mac - April 27, 2005

    eMac - May 3, 2005

    iMac G5 - May 3, 2005

    iPod - June 28, 2005

    iBook - July 26, 2005

    Mac Mini - July 26, 2005

    This either means:

A.) Intel PowerBooks will be introduced at MWSF in January 2006.

B.) PowerBooks and Xserves will be updated in the new few weeks.

The MPC7448 is already in the hands of certain manufacturers for some months now, I guess in very limited quantities.

No one knows for sure. All depends from their contractual obligations to Apple.

Indeed, there is too much of evidence to believe so.

Did you check the Ars thread which I linked to above? There are precise reports that people have already received their keynote access badges. Why Apple send these badges without a keynote planned?

No, for me it is quite clear that there was a keynote in the cards and for some reason that keynote has been cancelled.

Since SJ has nothing really new to announce (no fantastic power pc products around), and don't want to face the public about the Intel transition thing, SJ has decided to cancel the keynote.

Good move, imagine, that he has to face insults and sarcasms ...

To add to your post. The Powermac and Powerbook upgrades were ridiculous as well as the Mac Mini and Ibook. So, my feeling is that we are going to see updates to any possible machine in the current line up at any time. except the Imac that seems to had a more solid update.

What's makes me sad is the fact Apple is putting to much emphasis on the Ipod. I know is a cash cow, but as far as I remember Apple is called Apple Computer. so please put your focus back on the Computer.

Well, it's certainly not looking very good. I wouldn't invest in Apple at this point. They have pulled out of a lot of things at the last minute recently. The new switch campaign, the Mac mini promotion and now the keynote. There must be something major going on to cause all these distruptions.
