Is it almost ready? When will it be ready?"

That aside I still think some kind of iHome MacMini with DVR, and iTunes, AirTunes, and a buttload of other stuff could be a possibility. People want to merge their computing with a lot of their other electronics. Hell look at iTunes it set the trend. Coputer/stereo, iPod. Some cool stuff is going to be there I hope.

Does it? Apple would likely use a 1.5 ~ 1.7 GHz single-core Pentium M (Yonah) in the Mac mini and iBook for cost savings. By then Apple will likely have quietly upgraded the PowerBooks to a 1.7 ~ 1.8 7448 G4. How do these compare? Keep in mind Apple spent a lot of time and money redesigning the PowerBook logicboards for the 7448 G4 processor. We got them last week... only without the processor. Pretty much count on one last PowerPC upgrade once Freescale gets these to Apple in quantity.

Also, it makes more sense to move the Mac mini and iBooks to Intel first. iLife '06 for Intel will run very well on them and consumers aren't as demanding as pros as far as performance is concerned. The Pro apps need more work to get them ready for Intel and they will need something more powerful than Yonah in all likelyhood. Merom is not due until the second half of '06. By then they should have the Pro apps ready for Intel. That is when I expect to see the PowerBooks make the move to Intel.

Good point about the logic board redesign. I didn't know about that. It did seem kind of strange to have the powerbook upgrade without a processor speedbump.

However, if there is yet another powerbook upgrade in before the Intel switch that could mean the Intel powerbooks could be released as far away as next September.

Why are people STILL expecting intel Macs in a couple of months? Apple have consistently said they will appear Summer (June) 2006.

Yup. Apple said that they will be shipping Macs with Intel processors by June of 2006. That can mean anytime between now and June 2006. Who knows if it's realistically possible to expect an Intel Mac at MWSF? Apple, of course.

Look ? Apple didn't decide a few days before last June's WWDC to switch to Intel. They have to have been planning on it for many many months, even perhaps years. The fact that Apple has released a new motherboard with the new 1.67GHz PowerBooks is irrelevent of Apple's Intel plans.

Apple has announced many times (with a big splash for media attention) new products at MWSF only to ship them a month or two after the announcement. Ask all of the first buyers of the 17-inch PowerBook, or the first buyers of the flat-panel iMac G4. So it's completely possible for something Macintel to appear at MWSF, even if it's not shipping for 6 six weeks. That has been Apple's M.O. in the past.

Alright, here's some (hopefully educated) guesses as to what will show up at MWSF:

    Almost certain:

    * iLife 06 (with new features taken from the pro apps)

    * iWork 06 (with a spreadsheet app, most likely)

    * a demo of Office 2006 (probably BEFORE the iWork demo )

    * new version of Final Cut Express

    Possible:

    * iPod shuffle update (even if just a price drop to $99 for 1 GB)

    * Asteroid (Firewire breakout box for Garageband/Logic)

    A very slight chance:

    * Intel-based Mac mini

    * some completely new Mac

    * a new digital life widget

I also want to rule certain things out. We won't see an iPod nano capacity boost: higher-capacity flash storage shouldn't be happening until much later in 2006. Also, Apple probably isn't keen on stalling nano production again, especially since sales are often pretty brisk in the post-Christmas wake.

And any Intel-based Macs beyond the Mac mini? Forget it. The iBook was updated in July; the iMac, PowerBook, and PowerMac were all updated in October. Apple isn't going to put a whole new architecture in place just a few months after an update.

Realistically, I wouldn't count on Intel-based Macs rolling out until spring. iBooks will probably show up in May at the earliest; PowerBooks are more likely to be released in June or later, when Apple can get its hands on "Merom" Pentium M chips that will really blow people away in terms of speed.

    Very interesting predictions.

It seems that Iife 06 is a very good bet including Photo Boot and Front Row.

Apple might introduce the remote stand alone for $29? $39?

I have been reading about the introduction of the App "Numbers". I would enjoy see such a thing as well as updates for Pages and Keynote. But my main concern about Numbers is the Microsoft fact. I am pretty sure they will get piss off with Apple comes with that and terminate the collaboration with Office suite for Mac. For me Entourage is a crucial application that combines email management, address book and calendar in one single app. The fact Apple's Mail, Address Book and Ical are separate is a pain in the neck. Plus they are very badly integrate with each other. Another thing I like about Entourage is the support of Hotmail accounts. (selfish reason, sorry!)

Entourage is great, I just hope it would look cleaner the way Apple's Mail is.

Airport AV might come as well or an update version of Airport Express and Airtunes.

I doubt we are going to see Isight built in on Cinema Displays. For folks that buy dual displays it seems odd to have 2 isight cameras. But I believe a new Isight in a smaller form is due to come sometime soon.

Cinema Displays I only see a possibility to update the specs on the 20" and 23". The 30" I think will be the same. I don't see a new enclosure until Intel comes along with the Powermac probably by middle of 2007. I look forward for a 40" plus HD monitor that could be used in home entertainment display.

Ihome is a big announcement and it could very possible be the "one more thing..." at MWSF because is mostly consumer announcement venue. I would love the idea of a computer/box that could connect all my video/sound equipment with superdrive and DVR include in a Macmini format box. With Front Row that would be just great. DVR software ala Apple style and easy compression settings to record shows and transfer to Ipod video and integration with Itunes Music and Video store it would make Apple take over the whole Media Center hub concept. I do look forward to such a thing.

I hope no more Ipods for awhile, OK maybe a 80 or 100 gig ipod video. That's all.

Intel Ibooks seems very unlikely, maybe by middle of 2006.

Macmini could became G5 this January.

Iphone very unlikely anytime soon, specially after I read the Wired magazine article.

    My 2 cents!

The WSJ reported the Mac mini would be the first to go Intel and since they broke the whole switch to Intel story I tend to believe them. It's logical that they would start with consumer Macs since the consumer level Intel chips (Yonah) will be available first. The first phase of the Intel transition will be all about affordability and ultra low power consumption. Mac mini and iBooks. Believe it!

I agree that the MacMini and Ibooks might become the first ones to get Intel. Specially the Ibook. For the Macmini will depend if the Intel chips are cheap enough to keep their current price structure.

The big question is, are Intel and Apple ready to announce new machines this upcoming January?. It seems a bit early, since Jobs predict middle 2006 to start seeing new products. But it could definitely happen.

IMHO here is the Intel transition

    Ibook and Powerbook Middle 2006

Macmini and Imac at MWSF 2007

    Powermac middle to end 2007

    Why?

Powerbooks and ibooks are in desperately need of substantial upgrades. G4 hit a wall long time ago and PPC G5 will not make debut on these machines. Apple will skip PPC G5 and go straight to Intel.

Imacs were just upgraded and are currently the best value computer Apple makes and will see upgrades through 2006 as PPC G5, probably the last Imac will be a PPC G5 2.5ghz

Macmini might go G5 now in January, unless Intel chips are very cheap.

Powermacs were just very well updated and it will see another PPC G5 dual core upgrade towards end 2006.

    Cheers!

    Næ!

I'm not expecting Intel based Mac until Q206/Q306 and we don't know what models come first.

IBM announced the low power G5 in July together with the Dual Core version, and if they're ready I think that Apple will use them.

If the switch to Intel brings any benefits (such as increased performance and battery life) then I think it'll appear in the PowerBooks first. Having the iBooks out performing the PowerBooks wouldn't make sense.

I also think we'll see the middle of the range single dual core 2.3GHz G5 bumped to a dual dual core 2.3GHz G5 at some point.
