What I saw this evening was VERY impressive! We watched scenes from Ice Age II, The Day After Tomorrow, and Ridley Scott's 3-hour director's cut of Kingdom Of Heaven, the first 50GB release from the studio.
I'll be damned if I saw any imperfections in the quality of the displayed picture in the parts we got to see. As far as I'm concerned, the image quality was just as stunning as stuff I have seen on HD-DVD. Furthermore, the Java based interactive content and menu controls that we viewed on The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen looked just as impressive as some of the new content being put on new HD-DVD Universal titles such as Fast & Furious 2: Tokyo Drift.

Yup but that's a game system and not a STB dedicated player. A true "apples to apples" comparison will require a comparable STB dedicated BD player. Consoles are competitive initially but the PS3 will be usurped in quality rather quickly IMO.
I'm certain that the PS3 will sell in the millions but the unknown variable is how many gamers will want to buy/rent a lot of movies.
There is indeed a $999 Toshiba HD-XA2 however that box has improved DACs, Analog multichannel outputs, Bi-directional RS-232 for automation/Crestron/etc controllers. I frankly don't care much about the HDMI 1.3 which is really useless right now. The 1080p output is markitecture as well but all in all it's a solid unit for those that need the extra features.

It's not just the gamers who watch the movies. Our son persuaded us to chip in $100 for his PS2 many years ago, simply because it let us watch DVD movies. DVD players were very expensive at that time. We got by quite well with the PS2 until a couple years ago, when we finally bought a $89 DVD player. We don't have an HDTV yet, but when we do I could see this scenario repeating with the PS3.

Sony Ready to Unveil First BD-50 Titles...(yeah, believe it baby!)
After weeks of rumors and great anticipation, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is preparing to reveal its first three dual-layer, BD-50 Blu-ray disc releases, via a press release expected tomorrow.
Though the studio has yet to officially announce plans, industry sources have told High Def Digest that leading Sony's BD-50 charge will be 'Click,' which streets next Tuesday, October 10. Though originally expected to be a BD-25, single-layer disc only, the release will in fact be dual-layer and come packed with all the same bonus features as its standard DVD.
Sony will follow that up with 'Talladega Nights,' which was announced last week for a December 12 release, as well as what the studio will be calling its "flagship" BD-50 title, 'Black Hawk Down,' due November 14.
Both 'Talladega Nights' and 'Black Hawk Down' will feature a wealth of bonus content shot exclusively in high-definition. 'Black Hawk Down' will also be the first Sony title to feature the Blu-ray format's proprietary "Blu-Wizard" authoring environment, which promises to deliver extensive interactive content new to the format.
In anticipation of the full announcement, we've updated the listings for all three titles to our Blu-ray Release Schedule. Stay tuned, as we'll have complete specs for you as soon as they are released.
To me these are one of Blu-Ray's greatest assets and killer uses and it is one area where the capacity density difference between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray really matters.
HD camcorders with mini Blu-Ray discs is nice, especially given the limitations of 8cm DVDs. The only question is will memory prices drop enough to compete. Although I am sure there will be some cameras that do use flash memory or HDDs I can see Blu-Ray camcorders doing quite well. Finally the storage capacity to replace DV tapes with the ease of DVD. Shame it'll be a year and a half or more before any products.
