Actually I was in Costco and saw the Vizio L32 for $699. I was going to go CRT 30 or 34" but hell the Sony XBR 34 weighs almost as much as I do. I certainly don't want to have to move that b***ch up some stairs in my next place.
My thoughts on the Vizio L32.
Decent resolution from what I saw being played.
Slight red push compared to the Panasonic $1099 32" LCD juxtaposed.
The Panny had more pure whites
I didn't see $400 worth of improvement in the Panny so right now the Vizio L32 is the top dog. I don't mind not having 1080p right now. In the near future I'll be looking at a 720p projector or 1080p DLP depending on my living space.
I figure in 3 yrs your typical 1080p projector will be $3500 and your 720p projector will be $1500 for a top brand. No rush I'll just grab a few HD players and wait for the right time. I saw LotR playing on a decent Runco projector here at Definitive Audio and it was damn good for an upscaled DVD. I can only imagine what a HD LotR will look like on a good projector. Drool
PS3 has already soldout (preorders) for the expected 400,00 US allotment at introduction, within minutes/hours of taking orders. I'd expect similar demand for in-store sales a la Wal-Mart, Target, etcetera. So that perhaps within a few days of November 17, that's 400,000 units SOLD already. Simply teh stocking stuffer to have this year, it's going to be a feeding frenzy I tell you! I'd even expect it to impact repeat buyer iPod sales slightly, but who knows, we'll see.
Sony estimates 500,000 units (worldwide) at introduction, 2,000,000 units (worldwide, so prorating the previous allotment, that would be 1,600,00 US units) by end of this year, and 6,000,000 units (worldwide, so prorating that would be 4,800,000 US units) by end of 1st quarter '07. Whetever. IF Sony (and sales) holds to these numbers, that's 6,000,000 units worldwide, that's 6,000,000 Blu-Ray players on the market by 1st quarter '07, that's 6,000,000 HDMI players on the market by 1st quarter '07.
I'm wondering if the rest of the entire HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player market will have sold 60,00 total units by end of 1st quarter '07? Potential 100:1 market penetration by end of 1st quarter '07, one word.
WOW!
So after you've played your PS1/PS2/PS3 gamez 24/7 on your brand new shiny PS3, what better to do then to sit back and relax, pop in a Blu-Ray movie (at $20 MSRP or $5 rental) and RELAX!
Of course, I don't play gamez, so for me a $500 Blu-Ray player sounds pretty SWEET! And heck, I can see myself even buying a few gamez, just to you know, see what all the hubbub is about!
I can see the Sony press release now, one word.
GAMEOVER!
You're forgeting that every xbox360 is a potential HD-DVD player for less than $200 add-on and it will be released with free King Kong HD DVD Title. Don't you think $200 HD-DVD add-on would make a great X-mass present?

I think the XBox 360 has yet to make it on a lot of X-mas lists. Most owners I know aren't cousins but co-workers. Geek ones. The PS3 will be the same way...but geek co-workers tend to spend disposable income on geek toys than even my most affluent cousin.
Meh...I dunno how many will be buying the $200 add on if it ships without HDMI. Has MS changed their stance on that?

Yes $200 would be even sweeter, but I would also have to buy the xbox also, at what total cost?
Don't get me wrong, I'm sitting this one out near term, most likely not before the end of next year.
Not much into bleeding edge technology anymore, too old, too cheap. Except perhaps for a Mac OctoPro! or a DIY Conroe (E6600) kickass PC!

Unlike the 360 that had basically no backward compatibility it is possible to invest in a PS2 knowing the PS3 retains full backward compatibility so your investment now can be held when prices drop and people decide to upgrade.
Not to getting in the way of you taking Elixir down a few notches, but the XBOX 360 has pretty decent compatibility on most of the games people want to play. I've been playing GTA:SA and Jade Empire on it fine.

I think he meant hardware wise. The PS3 is compatible with PS and PS2 games because it has the PS2 hardware in it, the 360 does it entirely by software emulation. Which in turn does demonstrate it's raw power in the sense that it can emulate games running on a 733Mhz P3 with a Geforce 3/4 hybrid card. But this means less compatibility.
I've noticed glitches on every original xbox game I've played on the 360. Not even Halo 2, Xbox's best selling title, renders shadows and backgrounds correctly on the 360. I have Jade Empire... It looks nothing like it did on the original xbox... While there aren't any glaring glitches... it's framerate is half of what it was, and the texture quality just seems poorer... Not to mention the colors are off.
Plus M$ promised full backwards compatibility, then renounced that promise, and then offered shoddy work on the games they do support.
ooh lordy the ps3 fanboys are out tonight aren't they. why is marzetta so freaking happy the ps3 sold out? i mean this was a given, a freaking given. i'd hope there were that many ps3 die hards out there or else all these arguments would have been a REAL waste of time for all of us, howedver after further reviewing these sold our pre-orders, it looks like a lot of stores have limited the amount of consoles per store, gamespot for example only allowed 8, yes, 8 per store!!! last year for the 360 they allowed a buttload of preorders leaving many people very disappointed for a while... lets also not forget that the frenzy to make money of these consoles are driving huge numbers of people to make sure they get their hands on preorders to resell them for a profit.
anyways, since people love to post opinions from other people i'll have at it

i mean anyone can go ahead and post the nonesense that you can find online. hype online is like hype you'd never see before outside of the freaking web, we all know this to be true, its the bloggers glory... hype.
just wait and see when we start hearing the complaints about the system, just freaking wait, they'll be coming, and coming hard for both the wii and the ps3.
the same thign is going to happen to sony as it did for microsoft last year. they will be sold out of consoles, and the next best thing for many people will be to go right ahead and pick up a 360 and a wii.
I'm actually really starting to think about going Xbox360 with the HD DVD add on. My next TV will likely have a VGA input which means I'd have full 1080p support for movies.

The 360's VGA cable doesn't support 1080p. It supports 720p and up to 1360x768, but nothing above that. The console itself doesn't even support 1080p. it uses 720p and uses the upscale trick to get 1080i.
*Edit* There's a rumor going around that the Fall Software Update from M$ will enable 1080p... But I really doubt it since they'd have to have 1080p hardware in the machine already to make it work... Unless M$ just likes to screw us all over that much... */Edit*

this is what i never understood. at 1080p you cant even see a difference really, and anything lower than like 50inches its actually worse to get a 1080p.

I suspected as much but didn't have time to research it. VGA hits the limits of its bandwidth at 1600x1200. I couldn't see it essentially matching DVI's maximum resolution, which is a newer, digital technology and only gets to 1920 wide by eliminating the vertical blanking interval, something the analog VGA interface still needs.
Since the discussion is about game consoles as well as HD for movies, I looked at the description and pricing for Xbox 360 and PS3. For someone who wants it for HD movies as well as games, the Xbox appears to cost $100 more. I'm assuming my son would want a hard drive for games, and in the Xbox information a lot of things can't be done without a hard drive.
The Sony is $500 with hard drive and BluRay player, and it has HDMI.
Xbox is $400 with hard drive + $200 more with HD-DVD player, and it doesn't even have HDMI.
The choice seems obvious to me. Am I missing something? I am neutral about the game platform, since I would need to buy new games to play in high definition. That is the goal of a HD game system, for me anyway.
HDMI is also a big plus, since I will likely use this interface for a HDTV system when I finally buy one. Component interface would likely look as good, but I think HDMI is the trend for the future, and what we will see the most of. I want something that stays current for many years.

Panasonics tend to be a bit cool in their colour ranges so that isn't necessarily too bad.
