I mean, I'd buy one. But why do they "so need" them? They've not exactly been a roaring success in the Windows world.

    Tablets!?!?

Apple sold more Macs last year than the entire industry sold tablets! That's how few tablets were sold!

Geez, until it is lighter than a paper notebook, water resistant, invulnerable to drops, sit-downs, and baby puke, it is not a tablet. It is a laptop with touch screen and a fancy swivelling lcd.

    Just my opinion, though.

I thought the point about iTablet or macTablets was that once they are released - they would be considerably less than rubbish and hence the market would make itself (PC manufacturers.. 'OH I see that's the way to do it..')

wrt Junkyard Dawg - NTWICAR! (Now That's What I Call A Rumor!) yay!

the fact is, people, rolo posted a rumor that he thought had some validity to it. its not his fault it turned out to be wrong.

Actually, the reason he's getting a hard time has nothing to do with his rumor. It's because he's making up total crap, and milking it for all it's worth. Of course, if he wanted credibility - there are ways to go about that. This isn't one of them.

big F*(&ing deal if it wasnt true. did you go out and mortgage your house to buy apple stock based on this rumor?

No, I actually sold half of mine.

there's a difference between hearing something (which turns out to be false) and posting it and just pulling something out of your ass and saying its fact. rolo did the former.

wow, I didn't know Rolo had his own RDF?! Actually, he did the latter and has done a good job of fooling people like you.

Junkyard Dawg's predictions seem very likely. JYD, the splitting of the tower line DOES make sense, and the reason is Intel's CPU offerings. The low-end tower cannot be a dual-dual, because Intel does not offer, or plan to offer in the near future, an affordable CPU that can be used that way. The low-end tower would probably be Conroe, or possibly Yonah. The high-end tower would be a Xeon, possibly a Woodcrest. Because a dual-dual machine would contain $2000 worth of CPUs alone, the line has to be split into high- and low-end systems. Makes perfect sense.

    Wow.

I've never heard such a succinct analysis of the tablet market.

Because Apple are the only company with the creativity and guts to make a decent Tablet. Not a laplet with twist off screen, but a useful device reinvented like iPod.

Maybe the mythical tablet as everyone wishes it to be is simply undoable at this point.

    Good point.

Maybe part of the move to Intel was to allow powerful small devices.

The tablet as it should be:

Flexible, foldable or rollable screen that becomes stiff when extended or with some kind of stiff backplate like a clipboard (not ideal, but ok).

Scroll-like rollers at each end of the screen for the electronics and battery.

Water-resistant: rain will not harm it, a random splash won't harm it. Dropping it into a puddle and picking it right up and cleaning it off won't harm it. Drop it and leave it, and it is ruined.

You can write on it with any normal writing instrument - ink and pencil will not stick, or with a stylus.

    Weight? 6-14 ounces.

Size? A4 or Letter at most.

    Wireless, BlueTooth, miniUSB.

Remember the screens they used in the movie Red Planet (Carrie Ann Moss, Val Kilmer)? Something similar.

Notice how the paradigm of paper still remains? That's been developed over thousands of years and honed to near-perfection. Why break it?

Apple Design put out a (non-functional) unit like that about 10-12 years ago. The hand unit was Scroll, the pen unit was Quill. We're just now getting to the point of maybe making it work.

It would require OLED technology, yes?

That, or some version of a polymer TFT on a polymer substrate, as these guys are doing.

I can't quite tell from the website if these are shipping products or "proof of concept", but the monochrome display pictured sure looks cool:

And as I look at that, it brings up a point I hadn't considered:

How do you make a flexible display rigid enough, when deployed, to work well a stylus? Would you always have to make sure it was lying on a hard surface? If so, what's the point? And if not, how do you tap and write on an unsupported floppy thing?

The company linked to clearly intends their tech as primarily a passive display, rather than a tablet type thing. Like a little pull out 5" screen on a cell phone.

The iMac Core Doo has apparently gotten an unfair treatment by the press.

ps. ROLO: just get over the fact that you got these kids hops up so high that it brought about the well known "post christmas eve syndrome". Some ofcause more than others Why the Moderator has chosen to argue the side of the plaintiffs instead of those trying to calm people down is ofcause the biggest mystery. ...oh no... we'll see if the Moderator can "resist the temptation to ban" ....us all?

You know...it's funny...if anyone were to use any kind of (racial or otherwise) slur...they'd be eviscerated. It is a name that has meaning, value, respect and reverence for some of us. I asked respectfully and politely. Nothing more. That'll teach me.
