Looking at the dell model mentioned earlier, the addition of a remote(w.o tuner), upping to an 80 gig HDD, higher end, brighter display, a video card with non-shared ram and the price is closer to $1900.
Add to that the fact that the wifi is a "minicard" on the dell whereas it is integrated on the Apple, meaning nothiong hanging off the sides., the camera, and OSX in stead of windows (NOT pro at the 1900 pricepoint that I got form Dell) and it seems to be well worth it to me.
ALSO: Build quality of apple is better than Dell and it is thinner, and 15 inch, NOT 17 inch, making it more mobile in my backpack and easier to use on my lap in the commons and student union.
so, can we use something other than dell as a pricepoint? why even use dell, really...just b/c they are the biggest sellers or something? they sell cuz they're seen as cheap...duh.
I used dell because it was the first thing I saw this morning on dealnews.com. I opened my eyes and at first I thought it was the mac because of the silver case and the cpu... then I looked for a split second more and it was a dell..... so I thought I would start the thread.
I wish Apple would dump their whole (i) line. I can't stand that normal (poor/non-intellectual) people can afford a Mac. I like being part of a small special group of people, you know the ones who sit in a coffee house and make fun of other misfortune slobs (i.e. every Friends episode). The fact that their is bickering about Apple overcharging for there elitist products just proves to me that Apples prices are actually to low because if they were higher the bottom feeders wouldn't even consider Apple as a viable/economic choice, hence no bickering. Lets take B&O for instance, their not the best, but damn their sexy and very expensive. So I know when I purchase one I'm part of a small elite group, the ones who don't complain about the price because it's a non-issue.
Apple I'm with you, Steve I know your arrogant, self absorb, rich asshole. Show some backbone, dump the (i) line and create more envy in the world for the lower life forms!
I would rather own an Apple laptop than any other PC builder's on the market. I've seen too many problems with Toshiba, Dell, Compaq, and other brand's laptops that were just plain dumb; oversights that should have been noticed before they made it out of the sweatshop.
Not to mention bad or confusing customer service; even Dell.
Its not just the cpu that changed, the motherboard and graphics cards changed as well. No longer do Big endian firmware / drivers have to be written for the graphics cards. No longer does apple develop their motherboards (intel does, which are usually priced cheap), and now they are buying cpu's from one of the biggest cpu suppliers in the world.
How do the thicknesses compare? For one, the slimmer drives and more compact components cost more money. The only 1" thick Dell I see runs at 1.1GHz. For most people, stuff like this doesn't matter.
Personally, I really like all the useful features that aren't found on a Dell that I'm aware of at any price.
I definitely admit that dell laptops are the mmmmmm ... how do I say... 1980 Huffy of bicycles? The 1970 U-GO of cars? And don't get me wrong.... apple makes quality stuff... Like i said... perhaps prices will come down a bit more in 18 months when the transition is over with.
I don't think its fair compare a Dell laptop with a Macbook Pro purely on Specs. The Dell laptops are very cheaply made with cheap plastic cases and cheap power adaptors. I bought a Dell laptop last year for some audio work. The Dell power supplies caused all kinds of RF noise interference with my audio hardware. Buying a cheap groundlift adaptor solved most of the problems, but this is not an ideal or safe solution. Or I could have just run off the batteries all the time, but not very ideal either as this can hamper CPU performance. Also, Dell laptops have the low quality 4 pin firewire ports. Apple laptops have the better bus-powered 6 pin ports. These are just a couple examples where Apple uses superior components through out the entire system. I'd even go as so far to say that when you add up all the little details, the Apple MacBook Pros are actually a better buy than the comparable Dell laptops.
I have a Dell Laptop as well as a Powerbook, I hate it. The overall design of the powerbook is so much better, plus it runs OSX, versus windows, which as we all know can be terrible most of the time.
The only thing Dell has going for them is the modular bay battery, that is only reason I am forced to take my dell laptop with me sometimes. 8 hours of battery life is great with that second battery.
Yes, I can see how that 2nd battery bay is nice. But not really that big a deal since you can buy extra battery packs for a powerbook (or Macbook Pro) anyways. Of course you have to save your work, shut down, swap the battery, and restart. An inconvenience, but not really that big a deal since that extra bay adds extra bulk and weight to the machine anyways.
But really, these Dell machines are like cheaps toys compared to what Apple offers. From a purely hardware standpoint (not considering benefits of OS X), I don't see how they can really be considered a better "deal".

I don't think that is what jpennington is saying. I have a laptop that allows the user to substitute the optical drive for a battery.
Heh... I'm still bitter about the lower ram slot burning out on my powerbook 2 times now (with stock ram). Apple should give me a new powerbook. *curses*
You guys have proved to me successfully that the new powerbook is quite competitive in price... Now I just gotta pony over the dough and throw this one in the trash.... actually its going in a glass because it worked 16 hour days for 7 months to make a HUGE site that will be released april 1st. So I'll put it in a glass case in its own room when I become a millionaire from it
With the new Intel Macs prices are still nuts! Dell, offers their Dell Inspiron E1705 Core Duo 1.66GHz 17" Widescreen Notebook for $1,149 (edited initial price). Apply coupon code "7ZKZLCCV0HJJD7" and the price falls to $1,049.
Specs: Intel Core Duo T2300 1.66GHz 667MHz FSB processor, 17" 1440x900 widescreen LCD, 512MB dual channel DDR2 SDRAM, 60GB 5400 rpm Serial ATA Hard Drive, 8x dual layer DVD burner, 802.11g wireless.
Apple's same cpu:
15.4-inch TFT display with 1440x900 resolution
1.67GHz Intel Core Duo with 2MB shared L2 Cache
667MHz frontside bus
512MB (single SO-DIMM) 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
80GB 5400rpm Serial ATA hard drive
Slot-load SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW)
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 128MB GDDR3 memory
As you can see a smaller screen (same rez), Same CPU, Same FSB, Same ram, (add 35 for same harddrive), same burner... to get the graphics cards comparable you need to select the NVidia 7800 go 256mb (only option besides intels on board graphics) for 299. On apple's you get iSight, front row, bluetooth built in. Add another 50 to dell's for bluetooth.
So with the price updates we have 1400 vs 2000 (roughly).
600 dollar difference eh? hrm...
What do you think about this? 600 worth it to use os x?
My opinion is yes. But I still feel very burnt in the fact that my hardware is exactly the same yet I pay 600 more for it. Wow.
The elegant design, the backlit keyboard, the built-in iSight, the MagSafe powercord have no value to you? By all means, buy your clunky Dell laptop. Nobody really cares. In fact, I had a quick debate whether or not I'd answer to this thread because, frankly, I don't care for you or your spending habits. I decided I had time to kill waiting for the bus I missed.
The person that wrote the article is probably slightly retarded. And MacNN doubly so for linking to it.
And now with the recent speedbump, you can't compare the two anymore since the MacBook Pro will 15-20% faster than the Dell with the larger FSB and faster CPU.

Obviously you didn't read my post(s) clear enough to think I would even consider purchasing a dell. You flamed me for the wrong reason pal. You are an idiot for even thinking thats what this thread was about. Next time do yourself a favor and read all the posts before you post. I believe that is one of the rules on these boards. You'd clearly see that I would never ever consider purchasing the dell. You'd clearly see that it was only brought to show that the price COULD be cheaper... without all the extras. learn2read newb
Interesting... Apple is shipping with faster processors. This supports my theory that prices could have been cheaper. Who knows how much cheaper... but cheaper. If they had room to stick faster processors in before shipping then they could have lowered the prices with the previous processors.
Now the MacBook Pros come with dual 2.0 and dual 1.83 cpus.
Comments
Apple *is* more expensive. Quoting 'industrial design' is a red herring as all laptops have it. Sure they may be ugly, but they have been designed.
I'm happy to pay more for a Mac, I bought a MBP for £1800 today, but there's no denying a better specced Windows laptop can be had for much less.

The Dell has the wireless on an INTERNAL mini-pci slot. Nothing is 'hanging off the sides'.
Hyperbole-r-us?!
