So what do you get / don't get compared to the 1.83 Mac Book Pro.
Since the lowend macbook pro is now 2k... since they swapped the cpu's...
With this system you get a weak graphics card. So add about another 200 onto that for a x1600 (if it was avail). Add another 100-200 for a better screen. Add another 50 or so for the mag safe. Add more for the superior apple case. Add more for the backlit keyboard. I feel we get a bit better value with the new one. BUT UNDER OLD PRICES compare...
You'd be comparing the 2k hp (with supposed add ons which you can't do) with a 2500 machine. Look at what apple did today. They dropped the price on their high end machine 500 dollars!!! just with a cpu exchange. What do you think about that?
Apple: You get a bright 15" screen and iSight, OSX, iLife, Backlit Keyboard, Aliminum metal casing, MagSafe power connector, 6 pin bus-powered firewire, optical digital audio i/o.

So what's wrong with Apple's pricing again?
Just out of curiosity... what was the price after dell's discounts? I visit dealnews.com every day and notice dell has daily specials. When the Dell 24" lcd was a hot item some days you could get it for 799 (down from 1199) if you had the right coupon code...
I think generally you can expect the discount with Dell to be anywhere from $250 to $750. So, I think even with the max discount the MacBook Pro is clearly a better buy purely from a hardware standpoint.

Thats awesome... so what it all boils down to is the fact that apple doesn't offer the low end stuff dell offers... but offers great high end stuff. I can live with that.

Can always claim the Apple student discount of... *checking* $280 on the system described above.
Doesn't matter if you're a student or not. They don't ask for proof. (But for the record, I am a student. :P)
Bringing the price down to ~$2920 for:
Apple:
MacBook Pro Core Duo 2.16 Ghz
2 GB 667Mhz RAM
OS X
100 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
Wifi/Bluetooth
And for the sake of argument, supposing you could pull off a $750 discount on the Dell, you'd still be paying ~$3000 for:
Dell:
Inspiron E1705 Core Duo 2.16 Ghz
2 GB 667Mhz RAM
WinXP Pro
100 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
Wifi/Bluetooth
As far as I'm concerned, Apple wins this round. *ding* *ding* *ding*

And to add to the weight I'll have to be carrying around all that money I saved by getting it instead of a Macbook.

Great job! You saved maybe $100 for a cheaply made inferior product. You are a savvy shopper, yes you are.
