Well the first lady I talked to said that the upgrade might delay it 3-4 weeks, so I got on the Apple Store. It said shipping time were 1-3 days, so I called back, cancelled my original order, and reordered the 2.16. I just checked my order status online and its giving me the shipping date of March 15th now. I might be calling back.

I talked to them again. They said the ship times on the Apple Store are wrong. Boo for that. Oh well. As long as I keep computers, I want to make sure I have the top of the line. I'm running on my 1ghz TiBook still. Its over three years old.

The spec bump is nice, but if I preordered one I'd be a little miffed because I'd want a 2.16 GHz Core Duo too! This would be 18% faster than the previous top-of-the-line 1.83 GHz unit!

Based on my previous MacBook tests, I'd estimate that the 2.16 GHz MacBooks are on par with Dual 2 GHz G5s for audio and video encoding. I'm eager to see how they really perform.

edit: Sony's site says 1.3 inches. Other sites say 1.5.

Sony's site says 0.9 to 1.3 inches. Last I checked 0.9 is less than 1.

It's also 1.6" narrower, 0.3" less deep and weighs almost 2 pound less, yet packs a dual layer DVD writer and 7 hour battery life.

It's not the cost, it's the fact that I wanted the top-end model, and they've changed the top-end model fairly significantly (330 Mhz).

So you only think size is important at the narrowest point? In that case they should have a little part that sticks out that's only .1 inches thick - then you could claim that as the thickness of the unit!

Will the Sony fit into a space .9 inches wide? No. You need a space 1.3 inches wide. 1.3 is more than 1. The sony is thicker, period. And to claim it's thinner is some of the more tortured logic I've seen lately.

But if you don't change your order, you're only down 160 from the top end, not 330.

Speeding machines up for free is good, isn't it?

It's a 13.3-inch laptop. 1280x800 resolution. Of course it's gonna be smaller and lighter.

The two don't even begin to compare.

Apple has done this several times.

I ordered the Titanium PowerBook as soon as it was released and the top end was only 450 Mhz, but I received an email one day saying that I would get a 500 Mhz. How beautiful it was when I first got it, and it still runs things pretty damn well for being four years old.

There were two others in our office.. One was a dual G4 that bumped up from 1.2 to 1.42 (I think maybe it was that the inventory had run out on the 1.2 in this case). The other was when the iMac G5 was first introduced. I don't remember exactly, but we got a 1.8 and it was supposed to be 1.6 or something).

I wonder if they do it on purpose to make you more excited about your purchase and as a way to make you feel better about having to wait a while for your new $2-3k purchase. I know it works on me, even though I'm usually excited anyway.

Yeah, but I can't ignore the fact that there's a different top-end now. I'd just prefer that they do what they say they're going to do.

So you'd rather get 1.8 than 2.0 for the same price? Very smart.

The point was that it bodes well for small and lighter Apple notebooks with Core Duo in, not a direct comparison. Kim reckoned there wasn't a smaller notebook with one in.

Cost is irrelevant to me. I want the top-end, and they've changed it significantly. If they would just do what they say they're going to do, there would be no problems.

Regardless of cost, you're still complaining about getting a 2 instead of a 1.8.

So change your damn order if it's that big a deal to you, what's the problem. Seems like you should be grateful they made this switch before the boxes shipped instead of sending yours then updating a week later.

No, I'm complaining that they changed the top end model, and more generally, I'm complaining that Apple screwed up.

Is Apple your mother or something? They mis-predicted what they were going to be able to offer. There's no other way to spin it, unless you're a blind Apple fanboy who thinks this company never screws up.

    Wow.

Your thought process is absolutely bizarre.

You consider giving customers a free upgrade "screwing up".

And anyone who thinks a free upgrade is good must be "a blind apple fanboy".

    Wow.
