You consider giving customers a free upgrade "screwing up".
[/B]
Maybe somebody DOESN'T WANT THAT FREE UPGRADE. Ever thought of that?
So if I order a 1.8Ghz Core Duo today and they announce they'll be "upgrading" that to a P4-Mobile at 3.2Ghz with 14 minutes of battery life, you would claim that I should be happy because they're giving me an "upgrade" ?
This is great news, good job Apple. I think this is a great way for Apple to thank their customers for ordering the MacBook Pro when it was announced. This is great PR and lets customers know that Apple is committed to providing a great value for the money thier customers spend.
I think the option to upgrade to a 2.16 Dual Core processor will give consumers additional incentive to make the switch.
I think that we'll see the Dual Core 1.67 processors show up in the next Mac mini as Apple was probably demonstrating to Intel that demand exists in the market for its computers. For that reason, Apple was able to get better pricing from Intel on the faster chips and hence could upgrade the processors on the MacBooks.
It's a great way for Apple and Intel to begin the relationship.
1: Will my 1,67 order automatically be 1,8 now or do i have to re-order to get the upgrade?
2: does this whole thing go for europeans too?
never mind, read the other article : Customers who pre-ordered a MacBook Pro from retailers of authorized resellers do not need to adjust their orders in light of the announcement. Apple will automatically update the previous 1.67GHz and 1.83GHz MacBook Pro SKUs to correspond with the faster CPU specs announced today. Therefore, customers who placed orders for 1.67GHz MacBook Pros will receive a 1.83GHz MacBook Pro.
So if I order a 1.8Ghz Core Duo today and they announce they'll be "upgrading" that to a P4-Mobile at 3.2Ghz with 14 minutes of battery life
Who would consider that an upgrade? \ (where's the "straw man" smiley?)
Don't be silly, this is a faster version of the exact same chip. Do you really think battery life will be significantly lower because the chip is .16 faster?
If you REALLY don't want 2ghz, you can always call and change your order to a 1.8 for the lower price. But I'm sure someone will think of a reason maybe somebody DOESN'T WANT THAT LOWER PRICE.

I'd hope so however, Intel's pricing per 1000 for the T2300 1.66Ghz Core Duo is $241 each. With Mac Mini's at $499, I can't see how they'll do it and maintain a decent margin without massive concessions somewhere.
I think Apple has done a great job; no screwup at all. They were conservative based on what Intel said they could deliver. And now that Intel is able to deliver sufficient quantities at the higher end, they're upping the speeds for no additional cost.
The 2.16GHz upgrade is a new option; one that wasn't available when you ordered. Don't see how you can complain that you didn't get the top of the line on the day you ordered. The day you receive your 2GHz model, it will still likely be the top of the line at least for another week or so - since new orders are still facing a 3-4 week wait, regardless of what the Apple Store says. (Customer service says the Store is wrong. It's 3-4 weeks.) If you don't want it, cancel it right now, and order again. No one is making you keep your order.
If Apple were to offer another model 2 months from now, are you going to complain all over again?
Might as well say a 300 pound woman is "skinny" because she has small toes.
Whatever. The point was that there's smaller laptops with 1.83 Core Duos in. That's extremely good news for Apple who have yet to produce their smaller laptops.
You consider giving customers a free upgrade "screwing up".
And anyone who thinks a free upgrade is good must be "a blind apple fanboy".
Wow.
I believe you're willfully misunderstanding what I'm saying, because I've repeated it several times. Money was not an issue, and I wanted the top-end model to ensure it lasted as long as possible, but now I'm not sure I'll be able to get it because I have to go through my IT bureaucracy at work. The change could screw up other people who might be satisfied with the 1.8 model and would rather pay a few hundred less than their original order, but now have to cancel and re-order to do so. Those problems would have been avoided if Apple had simply delayed their announcement until they knew what they were doing.
While I was posting this I got an email back from my purchasing people, and my order can't be changed at this point.
I'm sure many people won't care and will just take the new model and be happy, but don't dismiss my concern about the change just because some people will be happy with it.

I understand what you're saying. I just think your priorities are amazingly out of wack. If you were set to be happy with a 1.8, only a speed queen would consider it LESS able to "last as long as possible".
Sorry. I certainly am going to dismiss your concern. And by concern I mean pointless whining.
Would you quit spamming the damn boards already? There's NO discussion there about anything, it looks like you're just trying to get more hits for your crappy blog.

I'd say *most* people will be happy with this change. The overwhelming majority for sure.

I wonder whose thought process is bizarre.

I would imagine Intel could not promise Apple enough 2 Ghz chips to meet Apples initial sales needs.
Perhaps the yield has been better than expected so now Intel can promise Apple the 2 Ghz chips it needed.
It seems most of the laptops with 2 Ghz chips were shipping after the expected MBP ship date.
Many assume Apple just did not want the 2 Ghz chips in the first place, but that probably was not the case.

This is such an over blown example that has no correlation to what has actually happened in real life.
In real life you get a slightly faster processor at no extra cost which should be a minimal battery difference.
The 1.8 you ordered that is now the 2 is not the fastest as the 2.1 is now the fastest. They are both very fast.
