Fantastic taste in music. You probably want to add some Rogue Wave (their album Descended Like Vultures), along with some Doves (Some Cities), easily some of the best of 2005.

I'm most impressed with your picks of Illinois, The Servant, and Z. Some fantastic albums that I thought no one else caught (emphasis on The Servant).

To make quick edits to your list, replace Twin Cinema with Descended Like Vultures and add Some Cities to the list, and you got it all right (with the exception of #1, which we could argue about for quite some time ). I'll compile my list soon and get back to the thread. Good luck with the iPod!

    Have you listened to Chromeo?

She's In Control will make you dance around your apartment. I think they must have done studies into the human mind to discover exactly what would force anyone to get up and dance.

Forget anti-depressants, doctors need to prescribe Chromeo.

Ok. Maybe I hadn't listened to Chromeo's She's in Control before, and maybe I just bought it off of iTunes and - MAYBE - I'm enjoying it right now, as I type this. But in this politically-charged, partisan climate, who can really tell?

Now I officially postpone my list until tomorrow. I won't add an album after half an hour of listening to it, but within 24 hours I could see this album surging up the list. What do you think about Rogue Wave?

    I love Rogue Wave.

I was really into them and The Shins a year or so back. Went to a show they had in Austin (I miss Austin ).

Goldfrapp? Eels? Dandy Warhols? Nine Inch Nails?

All missing and a little different than you mentioned, but I'm with you!

Also, I'm listening to The New Pornographers right now! Zesty!

I was all set to say BAH! NO GOOD MUSIC!!! and then I realized I have 9, 2 and 5 and saw the Decemberists in concert. And that this year I've bought Damien Rice's "O," Ray LaMontagne's "Trouble," Deathcab for Cutie's "Transatlanticism" and the latest Sigur Ros?as well as a bunch more that I've liked.

Damn. It's hard to be a curmudgeon these days.

How do we argue this much when we have this much in common?

....take a look at this exhaustive list of pitchfork media's top 50 albums of 2005. it's a bit humbling for casual indie scene listeners like myself.

    hehe, just BR...

Institute is Gavin Rossdale's new band. Whoops, the title is Distort Yourself. Heh. Wiki link! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institute_%28band%29

Avenged Sevenfold was a hardcore band until the lead singer burst some vessels in his vocal cords screaming and now he actually sings melodically. This is the first album since his surgery and it is rockin metal with good vocals and little to no screaming. You might have heard Bat Country on the radio.

    A couple more:

Nickel Creek's Why Sould the Fire Die? I think those kids have some potential.

But -- on AudioSlave's Out of Exile I tried to listen to it -- I have a lot of respect for Cornell -- but it didn't seem to have any legs.

DIVORCE! DIVORCE! That album was terrible. Well, terrible compared to their first two.

You don't think the first two were, I dunno, too pop -- too -- "I'm 18"? I think they need about 15 more years on them.

(but they were all good, regardless)

I thought this last album was exceedingly sophomoric (lyrically) and far, far too much either navel-gazing or shaking their tiny fists in the air.

I agree with you, though. I think they ought to take a break for about ten years, embark on solo projects, and then come back together if they can drag Thiel (sp?) from, you know, Carnegie Hall or wherever he's playing. I really want them to continue to be like the New Grass Revival, which they promised to be in their first CD (with songs like "Robin & Marian" vs. "The House of Tom Bombadil" vs. everything else...and then their version of "House Carpenter" on CD2?? Compare that with Kelly Joe Phelps's version!! Two moments of utter perfection!), displaying their ecelecticism, which to my mind is their strength. I don't mind the religiosity (for instance, I love Ginny Owens's work); I mind when the sentimentalism (religious or otherwise) throttles their other strengths.

I think I have only bought two 2005 CD's: "Octavarium" by Dream Theater and "Inches" by Les Savy Fav. "Inches" was a retrospective, so it's really only one. Both were OK, but I don't think I have enough info to make a list.

Just a question: how do you guys, you know, download music? I'm very committed to buying music, but it's nice to explore. I'd like to check out some of your lists. What's the best way? (And no, I don't really think the iTMS samples are enough to get a good idea).

Yes, (but is was good to see them reaching for adulthood) and, yes.

They need to put that religiosity through the wringer a couple of times.
