They need to put that religiosity through the wringer a couple of times.

Yup. It's just too...earnest. It's the first time, to my ears, that they've really been marked by their youth. They oughta hole up with that first Ginny Owens CD, which is overtly religious and never once uses the word "God."

If you don't have it, it's amazing. It's like a blind Sarah MacLachlan (or Tori Amos) doing contemporary Christian music.

Just a question: how do you guys, you know, download music? I'm very committed to buying music, but it's nice to explore. I'd like to check out some of your lists. What's the best way? (And no, I don't really think the iTMS samples are enough to get a good idea).

Find a local brick and mortar CD store and get friendly with the owner(s) and ask them to spin a few songs for you. It's how I did it in the 80s, when after the Police broke up there was nothing but MC Hammer and C&C Music Factory as far as the eye could see.

...the only other thing -- a lot of times -- it can take quite a few plays to get used to an album. I've got a PInot Noir on my desk right now that, when you take the first sip, you think "what watery crap" and then you take the third, or fourth sip and you start tuning into what's 'going on' in the glass; and it only gets better after that.

There are, um, other reasons for those changes in your taste buds. I've got a Beam and Coke next to me that was really strong on the first sip, but with each successive sip has seemed more and more like just plain coke!

To which I should add: The Gabe Dixon Band. Get the live CD. Amazing. Like prime Billy Joel + Ben Folds + Bruce Hornsby + Joe Jackson.

    (I miss Austin ).

I'm going to Austin for SXSW. I've never been and am really looking forward to it.

God, how come when ever there is a thread like this I can never think of anything I'm listening to. I do know that the next three cd's I'll probably buy are: Bebel Gilberto, the latest Dandy Warhols and the latest Belle and Sebastian.

Funny, I just refilled my glass of Jameson's 12 year old Irish Whisky. Extraodinary stuff that must be drunk neat and truly savored.

This was easy when I lived in Princeton. It is less easy in central Florida. But I shall try.

Ok - without further ado, my top 10 of 2005.

    10. Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning

    9. Coldplay - X & Y

    8. My Morning Jacket - Z

    7. Fiona Apple - Extrordanary Machine

    6. Wolf Parade - Apologies to Queen Mary

    5. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois

    4. The Dandy Warhols - Odditorium or Warlords of Mars

    3. Chromeo - She's In Control

    :TIE:

    3. Her Space Holiday - The Past Presents the Future

    2. The Servant - The Servant

    1. Rogue Wave - Descended Like Vultures

    Honorable Mentions:

    Gorillaz - Demon Days

    Doves - Some Cities

    Fischerspooner - Odyssey

Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene

Danger Doom - The Mouse and the Mask

Belle and Sebastian - Push Barman to Open Old Wounds

Explosions in the Sky - How Strange, Innoscence

French Kicks - Trial of the Century

Grandaddy - Excerpts from the Diary of TodZilla

Tons of good stuff came out in 2005, didn't realize it until I made this list. I feel that everything on the Honorable Mentions list was criminally underrated, so if anyone reads this, buy them all!

The latest Belle and Sebastian is fucking amazing.

Oh, and Splinemodel, get a Rhapsody account. Listen to entire songs, and when you want to buy 'em they're only .79 cents!...Granted, I just use iTunes because I'm a dumbass that sacrafices 20 cents a song for convenience (itunes+ipod), but I digress...

I have to pick it up this week. I'm going to see them on March 3rd and I want to know the tunes.

One album I haven't seen listed is the Magic Numbers. Love me like you was my favorite song for a month.

I thought the exact same thing when I first read your list. And Trick Fall, you lucky bastard, not only are B&S amazing live, but this album is one of their best.

You know, the good thing about Apple having all of those trendy-chic commercials is that people who end up buying them end up liking really, really good music.

Yeah for some reason I don't like the fact that everyone likes the same indie music....

...but on the other hand I hate those people who reject bands once they get big.

    So conflicted. Sigh.

I would like to add though that I can't get enough of M.I.A.'s "Arular."

I just cut to the chase and dislike indie music and the entire ridiculous scene.

Yeah. It's too mainstream now. If you want to get away from the mainstream these days, you have to listen to Mariah Carey.

Indie music might start indie but it hits big pretty fast. I heard Iron & Wine's cover of The Postal Service's "Such Great Heights" on an M&M commercial, for God's sake.

Liking music isn't about popularity, it's about the sound. I think very few people actually base what they like on popularity, it's just an easy thing to point to once they get sick of a band's sound.

That happened with me and The White Stripes. I'm just over their whole "thing", even if they had stayed unknown.

It has nothing to do with it being mainstream.

That's right. Technically, it was about me being sarcastic.
