I'm not disputing you can do it - but I just think you'd end up with an arse, bloated OS X too if it had to be able to run on the near infinite combinations of PC hardware out there.

I've not seen the new headphones in the flesh but they look like old ones(?)

But, what is interesting is that those who have managed to get X to work on a PC have been reporting that it works well. and that's with Apple attempting to make it difficult.

Imagine how well it would work if Apple didn't try to make it impossible.

Actually looking at apple.com looks like the Shuffle 2G is keeping the older headphone style. My bad. I thought it was across the board.

Just think OSX could run on the most recent hardware like the NF4 chipsets, more video cards, ATI, AMD processors, Conroe, X-Fi sound cards, light scribe DVD-R's, better motherboards,etc... sorry Apple but your hardware is behind the PC side and this hurts your business.

But then again I'm sure I'll be blasted for stating the above facts...keep in mind I use Linux, XP, and OSX before you start firing off at me.

Anyway Apple is only hurting their chance to gain a huge market share buy selling software and gain many more software developers(when compared to Windows OSX lacks terribly when it comes to software) for OSX and the future OS(11).

Once again, repeat after me, "Apple is a hardware company, not a software company." The software is there to sell the hardware, period.

That's not a simple issue. Apple is no longer just a computer maker. computers now account for somewhat less than 50% of sales dollars.

If they continue to add to those other areas, it could drop to less than 25%, while continuing to increase in number, and marketshare.

At some point, Apple might find it possible, even desirable, to have a limited licensing deal.

While we're spec-whoring I'd say... Just think of OSX 10.5 Leopard 64bit running on NForce590 chipset on Gigabyte DQ6-mobos with Conroe 6400 OC'ed with Zalman fan to 3.0ghz stable, X-Fi sound cards (let's give a nod to Creative for what it's worth), 12X or more DVDplusminus-RW, and a sweet nVidia 7950GT 512mb... Alongside 4GB RAM. Awwww yeah. 8)

What do ya mean by "covering both sides of the clip"??? Oh, ok. got it. Had a re-look at the hinge design. The "other" side of the clip (around the part labelled no.4) is a bit thin to slot in fabric though...

For those not familiar, EMEA in the article stands for Europe + Middle East + Africa. Which basically means, Europe

I think this is more related to people trying to wear the shuffle on their sleeves instead of their pants. In which case armband-Nanos would be better for them.

It would be a nice machine! To bad it's a pipe dream now because of Apple's refusal to use better hardware and/or newer hardware.

Almost makes me want a cracked version of OSX! Darn you! Tempting me to pirate! LOL!

Since almost no one here has hear of most of those companies, it will be tough for them to think about it at all.

    Old school earbuds? Weak....

I already have the old school one, I was thinking about buying the shuffle and was interested in trying out the hear ear buds but now I'm slightly less interested in the player.

I spit up the water I was drinking. Evidently, since then, the "problem" of the edge connector has been solved. For those who are still scratching heads, the edge connector is that thing on the edge of RAM DIMMs.

But still, the English have not gone quietly into the night as far as influence on computer development. People rarely know that ARM used to stand for "Acorn RISC Machine." I'm not sure if ARMs are the most numerous CPUs on the planet yet, but I would have to guess that is the case. I'm almost certain there's at least one in the iPod Shuffle.

They're inside every other incarnation of iPod I know of, so I don't see why they'd choose a different core for the Shuffle.

Not to mention that they're the most likely CPU to find inside your cell phone, all GameBoys (since the GBA), all PalmOS 5 devices, all PocketPCs, the majority of WinCE-based devices... They're everywhere!

And with some manufacturers' low-end ARM-based microcontrollers rivaling the pricing of ubiquitous 8-bitters (8051, PIC, AVR, etc) they're probably going to start showing up in coffee makers, washing machines and anywhere else you wouldn't expect to find any computer at all.

Heh. Yup, those are some sexy specs. It's not so much pirating as a major hacking achievement to get OS X running on that awesome gear.

Showing your age again Melgross? Actually I was watching Oprah the other day (my mum had it on, I swear, I'm not an Oprah fan!!! I swear!!!) and they were talking about women hitting 60, 65, 70, 75... and how to look and feel fabulous at any age.

Nah, seriously though not much to do with age, it's just the PC-enthusiast side of things.

Let me explain MOST or at least SOME of the companies I mentioned:

    1. Intel (we are familiar with this, no?) - Conroe E6400 overclocked 2.13ghz easy to 3ghz

    2. Zalman - excellent Korean company that makes heatsinkfans for CPUs and GPUs. Helps keeps overclocking stable, cool, reasonably silent. http://www.zalman.co.kr

    3. nVidia (you may have heard of this, it's in some Macs)

3a. 7950GT 512MB awww yeahh. Sweet, sweet graphic card without blowing out your budget or power bill. Or at least the 7900GT 256MB.

3b. nForce 590 chipset - made by nVidia - excellent chipset for Intel Core 2s.

    4. Creative X-Fi card - yes, the poor bastards beaten to a pulp by Apple and it's iPods. We've heard of them... They still have nice PCI cards that bring very high quality optical 7.1 surround digital audio and 3D EAX sound for gaming and all that kind of stuff.

    5. Gigabyte DQ6 - Gigabyte is a major motherboard and graphics card manufacturer. I actually contradicted myself because the DQ6 uses the P965 AFAIK Intel chipset not the nForce 590. Still, this motherboard shows excellent stability for running 2+ghz Intel Core 2 Conroes at 3ghz or more. Also, there are no fans at all on the motherboard. Good for reducing the noise level. Mid-range PC motherboards have a nasty fan on the southbridge or northbridge.

    6. Now we trot out the usual suspects for RAM - Kingston, Kingmax, Corsair, OCZ - some of these are very compatible with new Macs for DDR2 RAM cheaper than getting it from Apple. For PC overclocking on Intel Core 2 Conroes at 3ghz, we'd be looking at 2x1gb (2gb total) or 2x1 2x1gb (4gb total) kits. Spec'ed at 800mhz or 1066mhz DDR2, RAM speed and latency can be adjusted to support highest level of speed, lowest latency, and highest CPU overclock and Bus speed overclock stability.

    7. With SATA2 hard disks it's going to be though the exact same scene for Mac Pros. Hardmac.com did an excellent roundup of four RAID 0 hard disks on a Mac Pro, and suggested how to hook up two more hard disks through the eSata(?) or additional Sata ports.

Class dismissed. Just some reading from tomshardware, and a little of anandtech, it's all you need to know on what's going on, on the other side of the fence. It's good to spy on your neighbours, especially when you're both using the same heater and/or BBQ set, for example.

Sunil, yeah, I know those companies. You don't have to be 15 going on 20 to know them. But most people here are not a PC fan as you are, or someone who is techie like I am , even with PC's, though I don't like them as much as you do.

It's just the opposite, the youngest readers are the least likely to be familiar with those companies, or the dozens of other do it yourself Taiwan, Korean, or Chinese based PC companies.
