right, and sony just lost one of its leading franchises -Devil May Cry is coming to 360. rumors have it that many Final Fantasy games will also be coming to both platforms. all that is left for sony to lose is Metal Gear Solid.
Snoopy- what are you talking about? some of the most popular places in europe holding midnight launches that were expecting thousands of people ended up with less than a 100.
i'm baffled, what news reports are you reading man???????
That's what Sony expected, but didn't happen that way. I'd wait for the real news before spreading more of what Sony would like to say.... From what I've read, PS3 can be found on the store selves collecting dust from day one....
The pre-orders for The Matrix Trilogy Ultimate have rocketed up to Top 50 for a $85 set. Clearly HD DVDs death was greatly exaggerated. In the next 3 months lower cost MS/Broadcom HD DVD players will come. The titles are finally coming in April and throughout the year.
I must say I'm feeling pretty damn good about HD DVD right now. They've weathered the storm thus far and player sales are still looking good and will improve April 1st when all MSRP drop $100 for the Toshibas.
The BDA admits they won't have comparable spec'd player until October and with the PS3 not setting ablaze overseas other than Japan. It's time to cruise.
The next question is how stubborn will the exclusive studios be in 2008? If I'm Universal I'm not coming over to BD unless Disney/Fox move to HD DVD. That's the easiest path to parity. Lionsgate would surerly go neutral leaving only Columbia as the lone hold out.

Yadda, yadda, yadda. There will still be less movies for HD DVD, and there will be cheaper Blu-ray players too.

I can guarantee you that the PS3 is selling a lot more in many countries compared to HD DVD as (and I've said it before) Toshiba is only represented through distributors with no advertising budgets.
PS: As to the specs, I would suspect that most people really just want to watch the movie.

You really want both formats to continue? You really want more expensive TotalHD discs? You really want both formats to end as niche products?
And Universal could care less about Disney and Fox. They want to sell movies, and to ignore the sales numbers for BD is stupid.
That's what Sony expected, but didn't happen that way. I'd wait for the real news before spreading more of what Sony would like to say.... From what I've read, PS3 can be found on the store selves collecting dust from day one....
And from what I've read, despite all the Microshaftie propaganda for the PS3 European launch, here are the numbers...read it and weap my HD DVD brethren...
New format becomes fastest-selling home console ever over its debut weekend.
ChartTrack has confirmed that 165,000 PS3 units were sold during the console's launch weekend.
The figure is three quarters of the total 220,000 UK launch stock for day one, and makes PS3 second only to PSP in the overall launch weekend sales stakes. The Sony handheld shifted 185,000 in its opening weekend back in September 2005.
PS3?s record-breaking debut for a home console comfortably beats the previous top seller Nintendo Wii, which sold 105,000 after its frantic launch weekend in December last year. Fellow format rival Xbox 360 racked up an estimated 70,000 at launch in December 2005.
The figure also means that Sony has not sold all of its opening weekend stock, something the platform holder claims is part of its overall strategy at retail.
The figure also means that Sony has not sold all of its opening weekend stock, something the platform holder claims is part of its overall strategy at retail.
Of course they will say that, it's called "PR Spin". What did you expect, them to say, "Our strategy is to flood the retail channel so we can claim we have shipped X million platforms" or "well shit these things aren't as hot as we thought, maybe the price is a little high"
I still can't find a damn Wii to save my life, but PS3's are in every store I go to. Best Buy, Frys, Toys'r'us, GameStop...

Oh you mean the spin you are attempting to create with your statement above? Regardless, the PS3 outsold the Wii and the Xbox360 at launch despite the higher price tag. Face the facts, the PS3 is selling, and selling well...which means Blu-ray goodness for everyone.
But the fact that there are any consoles in quantity still in stock at the end of launch weekend would seem to indicate that sustained sales won't be impressive. There should've been enough pent-up demand to sell-out, instead they sold 55,000 more than the Wii. But the Wii sold out, so there's no way to compare since you don't know how many Wiis would have been bought if there had been 220,000 available.
I'm sure that there is a little pent-up demand left for the PS3 in people that thought "Well, I'll avoid the craziness of launch day." They'll be done buying over the next few days to a week. The rate of sale after that will be the true measure of a successful product. As far as flop or fly for the PS3, I interpret this data as too soon to tell, but not a rosy outlook.
Sony can't win. Had supply been constrained everybody would have complained that their manufacturing prowess has dropped. They kept the European launch well supplied and achieved excellent opening weekend results, record sales in the UK and $25 million in Australia, and still people can't accept it. Give Sony credit where it's due, they had a good European launch, albeit much delayed.
Is that the end of it? No but there is no question so far the PS3 is a success in Europe.
But the fact that there are any consoles in quantity still in stock at the end of launch weekend would seem to indicate that sustained sales won't be impressive. There should've been enough pent-up demand to sell-out, instead they sold 55,000 more than the Wii.
Strange, how Sony's capability to supply sufficient PS3 consoles at launch is now seen as a fault, rather than a virtue. The number sold still stands as a record, exceeding the Xbox and Wii.
Yadda, yadda, yadda. There will still be less movies for HD DVD, and there will be cheaper Blu-ray players too.

165k units. Meh. It barely beat out supply constrained Xbox 360 and Wii. The UK certainly has done better than Aus 20k units but I certainly don't think that I'm seeing anything that will hamper HD DVD from getting to it's goal of 2 million players.
Yes there will be less movies but the movies I have access to are more than I can afford. Plus with no region encoding I'll be picking up titles like Total Recall, T2, The Fifth Element, The Prestige and other NA BD exclusives from xploitedcinema. Content is King and I have access to enough content to keep me busy.
Yes you can guarantee me that but what you cannot guarantee me is that these PS3 will be used for significant movie watching. The attach rate of BD movies to players is horrible. Even with HD DVD shipping no titles Blu-ray could only eek out a 3:1 ratio? They have at least a 4x advantage in total players and more exclusive studios. Rate this one an underperform.
People like watching the movie and HD DVD delivers excellent quality and on many titles excellent interactivity. There's a reason why Sony's modifying the mandatory specs to more closely align with HD DVD. Too bad they will be obsoleting 40k players in the process. Oh well choosing the wrong platform is the consumers fault just as much.
You don't know the pricing of TotalHD so that's pure FUD you're injecting. I want the format that delivers more consistent quality in player functionality, pricing and media. That's not Blu-ray. If anything should have died it would be Blu-ray which was a year behind and is burdened with too much DRM.
We're entering a new phase now. The PS3 made up ground because it was just as cheap as HD DVD. As of April 1st the MSRP of Toshiba players drops a C-note. I expect low $300 for the A2. By June we'll see the Reference Players probably enter at MSRP of $299
The PS3 can overachieve with more content but it's price cannot match the affordability coming to HD DVD period. By Xmas 2007 the base PS3 will likey be 2x more expensive than cheapest HD DVD player. Content is King but Price trumps all.
Strange, how Sony's capability to supply sufficient PS3 consoles at launch is now seen as a fault, rather than a virtue. The number sold still stands as a record, exceeding the Xbox and Wii.
I'm afraid you've misinterpreted my post. I simply mean that comparing launch weekend numbers to other consoles is a useless measure of success since the other consoles were contrained on their launch weekends.

Well geez, I hope the Wii would have sold better given the price disparity. I dunno how breaking sales records can somehow be construed as bad news for the platform and it makes that half million sold number seem somewhat less dubious.
These things ARE hideously expensive but the brits ploped down 100M+ euros for a console in a weekend. That's a heck of a lot of empty piggy banks.
Yes. I personally don't think it's good news. That doesn't make it bad news either though. I think a sell-out is really the only way to declare something a hit on launch day/weekend. Since we don't usually see this many consoles on launch day/weekend it's hard to tell if this is good news or not.
165k units. Meh. It barely beat out supply constrained Xbox 360 and Wii. The UK certainly has done better than Aus 20k units but I certainly don't think that I'm seeing anything that will hamper HD DVD from getting to it's goal of 2 million players.

I think a sell-out is really the only way to declare something a hit on launch day/weekend.
I disagree. A sellout only leaves the question of how many would have sold if there were sufficient stock on hand. Two examples.
Company A builds 10,000 units and sells them out. Is that a hit?
Company B builds 10,000,000 units and sells 5,000,000. Is that not a hit?
