Sony is basically telling CE vendors they have to support a subset of features because the discs that studios want to make need to support these features. The Samsung and Philips are the same oem player. Both are obsolete and will struggle to play the latest movies in a couple of years.
NO THEY WON'T!!!!!!!!!
How many buy movies because of extras and not the movie itself? How many first generation buyers?
3 weeks of little to no HD DVD new movie releases coupled with a %50 Amazon sales that was highly successful. Your definition of crap kicking is different than mine. I'm looking and seeing a format (HD DVD) that doesn't have 7 out of 8 studios and doesn't have 2 million PS3 in homes competing VERY well with Blu-ray.
I'm not convinced Corel really "supports" Blu-ray. All they really say is that they'll let you burn folders to Blu-ray discs. I don't see where they say that those discs will play back on standalone players. In fact, their more sophisticated product, Videostudio, doesn't make any claim at all to Blu-ray support.
Notice that they did not state "sold" in the article but rather shipped. This is a little PR slight of hand. Sony is making it sound like 100k eager consumers snapped up Casino Royal the reality is they are stating that 100k copies "shipped" to retailers and likely a fair amount of those have been sold to consumers. My guess is they've probably sold a little over half of that shipment to end users.
Sony isn't forcing shops to buy copies, and they probably won't buy unless they expect to sell them.
BD & A are not hard to type, but I think of the BDA the same way I think of the Coalition of the Willing. That was "America and pals." The BDA is "Sony and pals."
My emphasis added. Like I said. If you have a non PS3 player your BD is going to be obsolete. EVERY feature touted in this new Oct 2007 specification has been available from HD DVD from the 1st player to the last.
Profile 1.1 is not new as you continue to claim. Nor is it in direct response to HD-DVD since PIP is not what I'd call ground breaking capability.
It appears they pushed compliance back a couple months though. I thought it was to go into effect July.
Since Profile 1.0 players will continue to play Blu-ray discs they are obsolecent (if that) and not obsolete. My LD player is obsolete. It will be a long assed time before profile 1 players are obsolete.
who was talking about xbox360 black? its called elite, and it was recently annoucned at $479.
personally im' not too pleased with it. it comes with a 120gig harddrive, HDMI port and hdmi cables. oh, and yes it is black! a really nice finish to be honest. though i dont think its worth the money, they should have added wifi, maybe a wireless mic, and new internals but they didn't. you're basically just getting a bigger hard drive and hdmi
They should have included wireless networking in the box - it is still way more expensive than the PS3 once you add the $100 wireless dongle. Plus - I doubt that they will have a matching black dongle to go with the black case.

And you still must purchase a $199 HD-DVD player to watch HD movies, right?

Correct. Looks like the PS3 value is getting better and better by the day when we hear announcements like the Xbox 360 Elite. It will be quite interesting too if the speculation of a $100 price drop for the PS3 in October holds true as well.

How cheap will it have to get before you actually buy one?

Heh...that's kinda silly. Why'd they do that? I'd have thought the elite version would come with a HD-DVD drive. I wonder if the current HD-DVD drives can't get to the read speeds of the current DVD drive. HDMI is nice but...
Meh...I'll likely get a used 360 when Mass Effect comes out. I hate buying consoles for one bleeding title...damn bioware. I have an XBox because of Jade Empire.
After record breaking sales figures were announced in the UK for Sony's latest PlayStation, it should come as little surprise that the rest of Europe so ravenously snapped up PLAYSTATION 3s. True, at ?599, moving some 600,000 PS3s into gamers hands is a little surprising, but Europe loves them some PlayStations.
The BBC reports that of the 1 million PS3s shipped to retailers, 60 percent were sold through to customers. We're not sure if bacon butties were the main draw for consumers or if it was confusion that each PS3 comes with a Sony Bravia 46" HDTV, but something must've gotten into those Euros.
Maybe it's Launch Fever!
Wow, and we were to believe that the Euro launch was an utter failure by some here...numbers speak the truth.
...At the same time, Home Media Research shows Blu-ray Disc sales to consumers have now topped the 1 million-unit market, with more than 700,000 of those units sold this year. By contrast, Home Media Research pegs cumulative HD DVD sales at 900,000 units, 310,000 of them being sold this year.
Bishop said more than 2 million Blu-ray Discs have been replicated since the format was introduced in late June 2006, and that sales of Blu-ray Discs have accounted for about 70% of high-def disc sales since the first week in January...
Hmm, 70% high-def disc sales for Blu-ray...sounds strangely aking to iTunes market domination.

wait to see how it does a few months from now. at 600,000 units for its larget market on LAUNCH is not very impressive to me, sorry. the event was a PR disaster, the press was all over it, and the bad string of events continue for sony. sure, it sold 600k but goddamn i'd hope it could move that with all its fanbase and ps2 die hards. it's still not that great of a launch no matter what way you try to spin it.
as for the xbox360 elite, it is disappointing but in the end its all about the games.
by the way there will be a price drop for the hd-dvd add on. it will soon cost 179

Heh...if you can move 600K units you don't need spin with respect to how much your launch did or didn't suck.

Latest from DVD Empire:
HD DVD - 20.54%
Blu-ray - 79.46%
And they are sales, not ranks.
Why is it that a simple program from Corel supports both formats but Adobe only supports one?

That's just leaving money on the table.

I'd be interested to know what volume DVD Empire is seeing for the HD formats.
I'd be interested to know what Amazon ratings mean in actual copies sold.

And how, I wonder, to these compare to the number of SD-DVDs sold in the same time period,
