Just so there's no confusion, this is not a thread about bottled water...
Okay, I'll take your bate. I used to drink a little so I could socialize more easily. Since then, I've learned to not care what others think of me, and I don't need it any longer. Now, I occasionally take about two teaspoons of rum on ice cream or in egg nog in the evening. It helps me to relax, but I do not need it for that. I like the flavor of dark rum. A fifth lasts me about three months, so it is not a big habit.

'Used to drink to excess, and to escape -- now it's the recommended 2-3 drinks for the taste and to relax. I have a theory that those who do not drink, or otherwise self-medicate, will find 'other ways' of dealing with stress; either using ordinary things: food, or debt, shock themselves with Southpark, etc -- or sometimes just find a doctor to prescribe them out of their 'illness.' "Man was conceived in sin, and born in corruption, and passes from the stink of the didie to the stench of the shroud -- there is always something."
Generalizing again.
I don't think Americans are honest with themselves on what sort of 'free-falls of the mind' it takes to deal with the collective stress we have put ourselves collectively under.

Bingo. Totally. I haven't had anything beyond a tiny sip of wine once a month for about two years (medication reasons). A bit of Jaegermeister every now and then would be good.
I'm about 28 though, so a lot of socialising I plan to do (once the bipolar disorder is more under control) would involve drinking and drugs. Or I need to hang out with different people. Or wait. Maybe I need to learn to have fun and socialise without drinking and drugs. Which was what I was agreeing with you in the first place.
Oh I'm so confused. Will MacWorld 2007 just START ALREADY !!!!!
Honestly, I don't drink much. I have about one or 2 pints of beer if I'm out at a bar with some buddies (which is becoming rarer and rarer since I have a 21 month year old at home) and it's usually some dark or red beer. (a) because I like the taste, (2) I'm with friends and we're in a bar, and (c) It takes the edge off. You get to hear a lot of juicy gossip you otherwise would not Especially if it's Lady friends, ooh la la.
With meals, when we go out for a proper dinner or to someone's house, I prefer a vodka martini or scotch (only good scotch and that usually means Cutty or Chivas or Grouse).
Alcohol is a drug. It has a nice buzz to it, and it doesn't really harm anyone else. There are times when said buzz is desired; there are other times when it's just fun to have beers with friends. The only people I've ever known to eschew drinking are either religious zealots, dieters, former alcies, or people who are wound so tight that they're afraid a little drinking might have some adverse affect on who-knows-what.
I like a good wine now and then, but I really like microbrews, drafts beers from the northwest US in particular. Mostly social drinking, in moderation, I can't stand being hungover!
Just to be clear, I don't drink any alcoholic beverages. Never thought it was a good idea, and it turns out I was right.
eh? What do you mean, turns out you were right? How do you work that out? Type in alcohol health benefits into google and you'll see that on health reasons alone there is a strong case for daily moderate drinking of alcohol. Not clear cut, and what constitutes moderate is also up for debate.
And why shouldn't people drink? Some very nice drinks out there, which would be a shame to miss out just 'because I don't drink alcohol'. Like everything in life, do everything in moderation - eat a big Mac and fries (but not daily for breakfast, dinner, lunch). Drink wine (but not 2 bottles a day washed down with a vodka chaser). Participate in internet discussion boards (but not 8 hours a day.....oh nevermind......).
So why don't you drink? I tend to agree with Splinemodel in respect of non-drinkers. BTW, my wife and I share a half bottle of wine daily with our evening meal - that's our definition of moderate!
I used to drink a whole lot - starting at age 13 I was drunk most weekends until the end of college, and I smoked pot and hashish quite a bit also. I really enjoyed it (I even liked throwing up while drunk), but it lost its appeal gradually when I was in my early 20s - and I pretty much stopped entirely (2 beers a year maybe) once I had kids.
I regret that I never tried LSD before I had kids, but I would never do it now - too much depending on me. Maybe I will start up a nice heroin habit when I turn 70 or something, heroin is supposed to be fantastic.
The humorously paradoxical "I don't drink at all because I'm a drunk". Can't control when or how I use alcohol, so I just don't take that first drink.
I should note that I have no negative feelings whatsoever about booze in other people, just in me. I'm around drinkers and drink all the time, not a problem (although I'll admit being around seriously drunk people gives me the willies, in the bad flash-back sense).
For whatever reasons, my relationship to alcohol is entirely about getting as drunk as possible. I never had any interest in "social drinking" or getting "pleasantly buzzed". Once I take that first drink it's off to the races. Made my life a living hell. Not a day goes by that I don't thank the universe for not having to do that any more.

If you want to drink, drink. If you want to use drugs, use drugs. I don't agree with forcing anyone to do what they don't want to do, or harming others when they do it, but every action has a consequence.
i only drink socially -- since i neither have the desire to consume alcohol on a day to day or week to week basis -- and I never have been drunk. I like control way too much, and seriously drunk people give me the willies, in the goddamn people are stupid sense.

Brings up another point... did/do your parents drink?

Know or learn your limits. When these habits take over, it's time to reflect whether it is worth it. Believe me, I've been there.
