Yeah, I gotta say I'm confused SpamSandwich. Why did you start the thread in the first place? Idle curiosity? (I think that's a totally valid reason, by the way).

I thought it would be a good discussion topic, and apparently it is becoming one...
People who are on alcohol kill and hurt many, many more other people than those who are on other drugs (Mary) that just don't happen to be legal.
gawd, you self-righteous pot smokers are the worst. Alcohol has no immediate externalities. Smoking does. I'm actually pro-legalization, and even against the ban on smoking in private establishments, but that is beside the point.
Anyway, if a drunk (or high) person gets in a car and causes vehicular manslaughter, that's the responsibility of the individual, not the drug. Blaming the drug itself is foolish, and it's even more foolish the way you blame one and not the other.

That has to be the most interestingly phrased sentence of the day. (I don't smoke pot, but I won't stop you if you do... but it could become an issue if you decide to run for president).
Heh, I'm trying to refer to the types of folks who go on and on about how marijuana is so much better than alcohol, and less harmful to boot. The studies have been done, and disregarding the skewed test cases (from either slant), marijuana is more harmful.
What do all the studies say about cumulative liver and brain damage? I understand that alcohol may either increase blood flow or reduce build up of harmful prions, or whatever... but what could you get from alcohol that you couldn't get from eating extremely spicy Thai or Mexican food (other than gas)?
Maybe you should google it like I suggested and then you wouldn't try to compare red wine and mexican food.

Plus, I don't want to smoke a stinky weed.
Do you have any links to any of those studies?
Because as a non-self righteous non-pot smoker, alcohol is way worse for you than weed on any study I've read.
Alcohol can cause cancer, brain damage, liver damage, and FAS, not to mention deaths related to drunk driving.
The only one of these things marijuana was thought to have caused was cancer, but more recent research suggests that the opposite is true: marijuana smoking seems to be negatively correlated with both lung and mouth cancer.
Ditto. I used to drink just to get drunk, bad idea. Now I like the taste of certain alcohols and drink only for that. Overall I drink a lot less than in my younger days.
Bit stunned to read someone claiming alcohol doesn't harm anyone else - I live in a city and the number of drink-drive accidents involved where I live; death of others by those who drive under the influence of alcohol, and that's not just to those involved in the drinking, but those who are their passengers or innocent bystanders or other roadusers.
Kind of like a decent beer now and then, although I'm moving over to red wine, only because it's what I've got at the moment.
Technology has improved since the doobie days - they have evaporators now where you inhale pure THC steam instead of smoke. Since THC is supposedly good for your lungs, taking it this way is evidently an effective treatment for asthma (which the smoke got in the way of before).
I don't use it now, but I might think of it if I start to need larger quantities of inhaled steroids.

They're called vaporizers. What they do is "bake" (heat it up to a high temperature) the marijuana and you get only the THC.
I'm just annoyed by some of the attitudes and related-problems of anti-alcohol people. For instance, what exactly were you so "right" about that you never drink? If you're not old enough yet, have a history of alcoholism in the family, just can't handle liquor, or just plain don't like it, I can understand. But in my experience, young people who refuse to ever drink-- not even a glass of wine during the holidays-- do so to stand out. That said, frat-boy types who at 23 or 24 are still talking about "tapping a barrel" and "getting drunk with my boys" annoy me even more.
I generally agree with you on this. That said, some people do consider it a sin to drink, so you have to let them have that one.
I drink moderately. I wouldn't say only socially, because drinking alone is fun too! I have a few per week, sometimes a beer or two with dinner. If I am in a social situation, I may have several. I drink rum and beer mostly, but I'll pretty much try anything. Getting drunk does have less appeal to me than it did years ago, though. That is, unless I'm at an Eagles game. Then the gloves are off, fuckers!

I believe he is refering to the fact that other recreational drugs are regulated, supposedly, because of the actions of individuals on those drugs...

I think that was the purpose of the "supposedly" in his reply.

What started it was my reply in this post.

Is that related to Alcatraz?

I like to ask them why Jesus drank wine, and was still sinless?
