    because the secret is out.

look at the current iPod next to an iMac.

    Stare at it,

Now take away the iPod and put an iPhone in it's place.

It's easy to see what needs to be done to bring the iMac up to date.

OK, if we can take this literally, one thing is sure: chinless iMac.

I haven't been following this thread, just the last several posts. I've been thinking for some time now that this year will see new designs for all Macs across the board, starting with a new iMac based on Santa Rosa and a new version of the Core 2 Duo that'll run on an 800 MHz FSB.

As for an iMac design, I'd sure like to see a sleek, streamlined anodized aluminum rear case and maybe a plastic bezel. Touchscreen? I dunno. Since the normal distance for a display is at arm's length away, a touchscreen for a desktop doesn't make much sense. A trackpad built into a keyboard would make a lot of sense, though. LED backlight? Nope, don't think so. Too expensive right now.

So, if I had my druthers, I'd like to see a sleek new iMac that's faster and a new kind of keyboard that makes it possible to use the Multi-touch interface.

OK, hi-res display. But when? Leopard will not be ready another 2-3 months. Even the top secred features are not revealed yet!

Well, Santa Rosa won't happen for a few months either. Some say end Q1, some say Q2. And I doubt Apple would be selling Santa Rosa machines the day Intel is shipping the chip set. So far it took Apple a few months every time Intel introduced new chips until they actually started using them.

If new iMacs arrive within a month they won't likely have the Santa Rosa chip set. It'll probably be end of March/April at the earliest. Which is roughly the time frame for Leopard.

Anyone know whether the new iMac will use the new 965 Express chip set?

We've been hearing rumors of an Apple special event end of February. Seeing as nothing happened during Super Bowl, my bet would be iPods and maybe Beatles catalog on iTunes. That'll be that event.

And in March we'll likely get the new quad-core Mac Pros. April new iMacs and May/June new Mac Book Pros. That's my guess.

But that doesn't tie in with what European Guy suggested about new iMacs soon...

And some say NAB in April would be a good time for new Mac Book Pros.

probably not the right thread, but what I'd like is the ability to add a second keyboard/mouse and second screen so a second person could use my iMac at the same time.

Not so outlandish - iMacs multitask, right? So why can't I give my girlfriend a access to the machine, even if I'm using it? Ideally the screen/keyboard don't even need to be in the same room (so they need to link to a box that wirelessly talks to the iMac). I'm not technically minded, but is there a funamental reason why this couldn't work?

    Cheers,

    David

Hmm, because Apple would like more to sell you another iMac in this case than BYOMKAS? Just a guess.

well, of course - but IMHO a lot of people can't justify 2 computers for the home. Think of the extra incentive to go Apple if you can properly share your computer with someone else at home for the price of a screen/keyboard and 'box' to connect?

But still, my technical question is still out there - is there any technical difficulty in doing what I suggest?

    Thanks,

    David
