/ontopic The crappies tthing about the phone is Cingular!!!!!!!?!?!!
Um, no it isn't. It's certainly not the best thing, but it's not the crapiest either. I would say Safari is, I'll take a good ol' Gecko Browser before WebKit any day of the week
But there actually isn't anything (reasonably) crappy about it as far as I can tell.
Skype/VOIP is free or very cheap and no monthly contracts. And why do I "have to have the cell-phone plan anyways"???? That's exactly what I don't want. The option to have cell service is nice but not worth the "lock-in" IMO.
If your idea is that you don't need a cell contract if you have a portable VOIP phone, you are going to have an extremely limited version of cell phone connectivity.
Hi! I'm calling you from Starbucks, and I don't even have a cell carrier! Isn't that awesome? Um, well, I can't actually leave the Starbuck's while I'm talking to you....in fact I may lose the connection if I stand up and go just outside so as not to irritate the other people.... but it works great at home! What do you mean, why do I need a $500 cell phone to do that?

Skype is not free when you throw in the roaming options. To use Skype Zones, SkypeIn and Skype Out, you will fork over about $25/mo. International calling charges may still apply depending on the Skype numbers used. Now if that worked seamlessly everywhere it would be a great deal. But it doesn't. It only works when you are jacked-in or at a wireless hotspot.
I defy anyone to plot a wireless hotspot coverage diagram of the US and/or Europe and say the coverage is adequate enough to ditch a cell phone altogether. Now if that coverage isn't good enough, how much Skype calling will you need to do for that $25.00 a month to break even on the saved cell minutes? I am sure there are some out there that that equation works very favorably for. I'm just as sure the VAST majority isn't in that category yet.
I don't remember where I read It. But, yes, some of those icons were nothing more than pictures. If you watch the keynote, SJ said that he would show the calendar. He never did. The phone was is at a very early stage right now. They couldn't sell it right now if they wanted to.
Pogue and other journalists with first hand use of the iPhone have wrote on some of the icons acting as placeholders. There is still a lot of application work to be done until it ships.
