    From the article:

"Jobs sketched out the Platonic ideal for the new machine. "Each element has to be true to itself," Jobs told Ive. "Why have a flat display if you're going to glom all this stuff on its back? Why stand a computer on its side when it really wants to be horizontal and on the ground? Let each element be what it is, be true to itself." Instead of looking like the old iMac, the thing should look more like the flowers in the garden. Jobs said, "It should look like a sunflower."

Jobs is dead on right. The articulated screen is a good idea implemented well. The perfect computer for the modern home. This thing will be in the next Austin Powers movie on some groovy Saarinen table, I bet.

    Buy now! Buy now!

It is beautiful and it has an amazing 15 inch display. I am buying one as soon as possible.

Looks like crap. It's what I'd expect an amateur Photoshop junkie to post in one of our mock-up threads.

Too expensive. The specs will likely be impressive (for Apple), but too costly. It will sell well, but it won't boost marketshare.

It's the shiznit. Now if someone could dig up some specs.....

But seriously, the design is great. This is the hybrid design stage before everything is Airport-connected instead of physically connected. Once you get people used to the idea that a monitor is a peripheral, and not and integral, then the next stage is to disconnect the monitor altogether.

The design is as revolutionary as the gumdrop.

The gumdrop asked 'why does a computer have to have two parts?'

The new design asks 'what is the essence of the computer?' The 'essence' is located in the base, and everything is lifestyle and on the go.

iPod and iMac2 share a sameness in that they provide answers to how to make a computer an extension of the self, rather than the self an extension of the workstation.

Hopefully, that monitor will come off in tablet form within the next 6-12 months, to complete the transformation.

    <design geek speakulator=OFF>

I'm so giddy that I'm not even gonna rise to MacAddicts lame troll bait.

Anyone else wondering how you're supposed to access the RAM, harddrive, etc.? I know iMacs aren't traditionally expandable, but there should at least be an opening to get to the RAM....maybe on the bottom?

I think it looks ugly as well but then I've thought that about every product introduction after the Cube. The Cube was the last product design that really took my breath away. Even the TiBook, though certainly not ugly to my eye, was unimpressive at first. These things tend to look better in person so I will have to wait and see. Still, what I said holds true for me. The Cube is the only product that I've liked immediately, that made me say wow. When I saw the new iMac on the cover of Time I said bleh or something to that effect. I think this is because I was hoping for a widescreen display so badly. It comes in so handy with OS X. I wonder if Apple plans to differentiate between consumer and professional products using normal and widescreen displays. Perhaps we see smaller Cinema Displays tomorrow.

I guess we'll have to wait til the keynote to find that out.

This is the comment from my dad after I showed him the photos

"WOW! This thing is gorgeous! I want one! I will sell my iMac and trade for the new one."

My brother is a hard-core PC guy, he even says Apple is so ahead of everyone. He wants one too!

I'll wait until I see it in person, but I think it's ugly.

It looks like a white chocolate Hersey Kiss. Either that or the turd from a seriously malnourished human being.

From what I can see from the TIME cover, I like the concept - but the shape of the base is a disappointment. The hemisphere isn't as strong a visual element as the screen; it just looks uncoordinated and somewhat dumpy.

Put your finger over the base and try to envision what could go there. That obtuse-looking hemisphere is the least interesting thing I could imagine...

Ah, well. I may well feel differently after seeing one in person, of course.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

Im starting to understand steves vision of the digital lifestyle/hub now. This is a work of art, it is so soft and approachable, like a piece of furniture. Its like a picture frame floating in the air, when extended forward all you will see is the screen floating in the air!! It will fit in with any home and takes a step forward to the future when we wont think of a computer box in the corner. I cant wait to see what new goodies will orbit this hub! If only the screen detached and the mouse and keyboard were wireless, hey maby they are, aaaaaaa time for bed, leave some surprises for tomorrow <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />
