you know i've been thinking about it. i think the only reason all of us are waiting for all these updates is because we're just users of old mac computers and we're waiting for the bigger and better thing. but at least what i've learned with apple, is yeah of course they are always going to be releasing new things, but basically i believe if you see something that fits you dont sit around on your ass and complain and whine and wait for something new. act now and you'll probably be happy.
so after reading all this, every product expected to to be upgraded or even new products are depending on Leopard.
What about the Mac mini. Apple can't release Leopard until the mini is upgraded with a wireless chipset capable of supporting 802.11n. Apple has to be losing out on sales when people discover their best selling product of February (Airport Extreme with 802.11n) is not fully compatible with the Mac mini. How would it look for Apple to bundle the latest and greatest OS with a computer that can't even take advantage of 802.11n and Apple TV.
The Mac mini is what will be showing up on Apple's front page VERY soon!
backtomac, I do not think Apple can do any of those products now.
Minis are as cheap as possible hence use Intel onboard graphics. With Santa Rosa having a vastly better onboard graphics chip, it makes a lot of sense to wait for Santa Rosa in the mini upgrade. That'll be June/July at the earliest for new minis.
New Mac Minis not before Santa Rosa.
.
Cheap as possible eh? Dell in the UK are selling a PC with Core 2 Duo, DVD Burner and 19" flat screen for only £39 more than the entry level combo drive Mac Mini. It does comes with Vista though, so yuck lol.

Yeah I don't think Apple will ever compete will Dell at the bottom end of the scale. I don't think they want to either, there's an element of prestige to owning a Mac. I know the Mac Mini is kind of cheap for a Mac, but for the spec and once you start adding a monitor, keyboard and mouse, audio etc, it's not really that cheap at all when compared to a basic PC.

I think that the mini is the most in need of an upgrade, and it would make sense for it to be next while holding off for the new platform which will show up in the iMac and MacBook Pro fist anyway. What the mini probably needs for Leopard's release would be
Core 2 Duo processor.
1 GB RAM standard (512 is cutting it pretty thin of decent performance now).
"n" standard wireless card for full compatability with AppleTV.
larger hard drive for the larger multimedia library that the increased video content will bring.
These upgrades can probably be done to the Mini within the same parts cost to profit margin ratio that the Core Duo Mini was released with originally and with little or no redevelopment needed for the platform itself. I don't think that we will see a new mother board (Santa Rosa) in the Mini until the fall at earliest and would not be surprised if it did not show up this year.

Dell does not have the costs associated with development that Apple does, even with the Intel chips. Dell has the luxury of buying off the rack parts (for the most part) and throwing them together. Apple has custom MB's, enclosures, and other tweeks to the design to make it a "Mac". Apple could probably do it cheaper, but it wouldn't be the same Mac that most of their customers expect and they would probably have to cut some components (WiFi/Bluetooth) out that they want to be standard across the line. I would like to see the $499 Mini back, but would not expect it anytime soon.

You forget that most PCs are subsidized with Crapware.

Good rumors, everyone: Mac Rumors reports that Macworld.co.uk reports that "supplies of several Apple products appear to be at extremely low levels, but will ship in quantity within a matter of weeks. While the pattern may simply reflect a stronger than normal demand, it is also a strong indication that product launches are on the way."
I must say, I somehow doubt demand for the super-competitive (NOT!) mini has spiked in the last few weeks, so here's to a happy new mini, y'all.
PB, I was very much looking forward to that condolences PM, but I'll take the updated mini instead, and hope you don't take much offense.
The Mini could move to a Core 2 Duo chip at any time, there are speeds that are lower than those used by the iMac to use and they are at or below the price of the Core Duo chips that were put in the Mini when it was initially released. Santa Rosa will probably be used in the iMac as soon as they have the parts in enough quantity to meet Apple's demand for the iMac and probably the Mac Book Pro's. This would allow Apple to get better performance and possibly increase the profit margin if they choose to go with more onboard video options for the lower end models, which I suspect they will. I would expect the Mini to be out by mid April and the iMac to be released in May.
I think the next MacPro (processor) update will not happen until the "true" quad-core processors are available and Leopard comes pre-installed. The current quad-core processors are two dual-core processors on a single die that share (I believe) one connection to the chipset/motherboard. The "true" quad-core processors will have each core getting its own connection.
I think the iMac will always be using the same mobile processor as the MacBook Pro so the iMac will not see quad-core until the MacBook Pro gets one.
And another week goes by with no new hardware from Apple.
Did you see Murch's post? The longer we go without hardware upgrades, the more likely we are to see some new added hardware functionality. Maybe Murch is right and a new chip will be added to all Macs to encode and decode HD video. Somethings up, an idiot could upgrade the mini to core 2. It's a drop in replacement.

my advice

If the Mini moves to Core 2 Duo, that suggests that the iMac may be moving to Santa Rosa or even to a desktop chipset sooner than we think.
If the trend continues, then Santa Rosa is a given. A desktop chip though in the iMac is a more delicate affair.
I would expect the Mini to be out by mid April
How about March 13th.

How one could not take offense with such bold and aggressive statements?
OK, I wish you luck with this waiting. Glad if I could send you congratulations instead of condolences.

Um no it doesn't. If Apple was going to use Conroe they would've done so by now, but instead, they chose Merom.
