an imac with "desktop" components would be stonking! i don't think it's out of the question that larger monitor sizes might make this possible, but alas i won't hold my breath
Don't you guys think that if the new iMac is a NEW iMac - i.e. it features a new design - Apple will want to announce it at a special event?
And likewise, that if the new iMac is just an UPDATE - i.e. same product design but new innards - Apple will want to slip it in on the coat tails of the iPhone?
I believe the current extreme retails for $200-250 more than the highest end non-extreme [in the Conroe family as this chip will be the first Merom extreme]. Now does that mean it will cost Apple $200 more to use the chip? I would say it's safe to assume not as the retail use of "Extreme" is just the easy way to say, "Factory overclocked!" Considering the huge margins Apple maintains, I would guess that it doesn't matter to them to throw $50 at the product to have something a bit more competitive in the consumer DESKTOP market.
I recall G5 iMacs beating up PowerBook G4s. Why can't Apple realize they need a more capable processor in the iMac now? Just because Intel has some nice mobile chips shouldn't mean they ignore the far better desktop chips.

With a little free time today, I found the following price list: merom price list. So, even the 2.6 GHz extreme Merom, the only actually displayed in the list, costs about twice as much as today's Merom in the iMac ($851 vs. $423). Now whatever the deal between Apple and Intel is, the proportions should be the same. Which means just forget an "exteme" chip in the iMac.
they dont necessarily have to launch the new imac using a special event do they?
week commencing 30th jul going into 1st august seems likely, but as i said re the stock of current imacs at retailers at the mo, very very much doubt it will eb much longer
The only thing Apple releases without a fanfare would be a speed bump. There is no way the iMac would be updated without a special event or at an expo of some sort.
Apple Store UK is now showing 4 days shipping on the 24". Stock of Mini and iMacs has been tight in the UK for weeks, but it seems that even Apple is running low now.
I've decided that I'll hold out until October regardless though, so at least it will come pre-loaded with Leopard. It fits in with my budget too then, and hopefully they'll have the Rev A bugs ironed out, and the waiting list will have gone done.
I concur. Long enough for the iPhone to have its time in the spotlight, but soon enough to catch some college students heading back to class. However, I believe that iLife '08 will be announced and demoed at Apple Expo.
jobs has been in the uk lately, so there is talk of a uk related iphone announcement. i think if this is true it would come before any imac announcement and when jobs is back in the US

There could be 50,000,000 reasons why Steve Jobs was in the U.K. And there may not even be a reason.
It is a Tuesday, it is far enough away for Apple to have time to send out invites and organise a bash, and two separate rumour sites are pointing to that date.

Actually Ireland, if you bothered to read my post properly, you would see that I base it partly on two rumour sites. So there is nothing 'convenient' about my post. I openly admit I was partly influenced by Think Secret and others. No need to be a smart ass.

If you hear "Extreme" think about price. This is not for the iMac.
The price isn't that huge, we're talking high end 20-inch and 24-inch here, not 17-inch $999 model.
The price isn't that huge...
How much exactly?

I'm sticking my weight behind 7th August.

stocking up on fish and chips?
airing his rain coat?
filling up on pints of real ale?
going to see the gunners?
practicing his sarcasm?

I'll darn well called you a donkey-like animal if I want to!
Rep: "So... how's your stock on iMacs?"
Us: "Low."
Rep: "Good. Keep it that way... also, how are you on iPods?"
Us: "Also low."
Rep: "Also good."
I'm now counting Tuesdays until new iMacs and iPods. Not that I really care all that much about new iPods.

The milk's in the fridge bitch
Our recent conversation with our Apple rep went something like this:
Rep: "So... how's your stock on iMacs?"
Us: "Low."
Rep: "Good. Keep it that way... also, how are you on iPods?"
Us: "Also low."
Rep: "Also good."
