Dropped in on a SoftBank shop today in a small town in southern Japan to ask about rates.

Softbank has now created several tiers for customers who don't want the full-blown unlimited data plan, with the lowest one bringing it to right around 5000 yen a month, including the 2000 or so for the device, which makes it very reasonable. The staff guy also said the iPhones were selling very well, even in this remote outcropping of the universe.

Read somewhere a while back that the iPhone was going to flop in Japan, but I have yet to see any signs of that, but plenty to the contrary.

Maybe so if I do not go back to Kuwait or Iraq first.

Well, if you do go back, bring us some samples of sand as a souvenir.

Last time I was in Kuwait and iRaq ( ), they were not allowing brining out sea shells, or sand or stones, etc.... Maybe too much depleted (no such thing) uranium , but I will see what I can do.
