Owners of the Mini DisplayPort-equipped line of Apple notebooks who want an easier way to output video to their TV or other HDMI devices will soon have an option.
My question is whether the HDMI port will allow data from my camcorder to download to my Mac?

As far as I know, no. The display output is just that, output.
If you must capture HDMI, you need to use a Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro card in a Mac Pro. As far as I know, that's really only useful if you are trying to do a budget studio shoot or other kind of shoot where you are capturing live.
If you're using it to capture already recorded footage, you're most likely better off importing the media that you've captured than record playback out the HDMI port. If you're only looking for quick and easy playback, I don't know what would be the best way, save importing the media and playing it in iMovie.
